Not pleased at all—In a sharp turnabout from previous advice, CDC on Thursday said fully vaccinated may stop wearing masks or maintaining social distance in most indoor and outdoor settings, regardless of size, regardless of others.

Too early. #COVID19
nytimes.com/2021/05/13/hea…
2) This is too risky in my opinion. asymptomatic transmission efficacy is only in the 70s-80s even for the best vaccines. Much lower for others and for some variants.
3) “Walensky's announcement have a few caveats. She warned that people who are immune compromised should speak with their doctors before giving up their masks.”
4) @CDCDirector also said that "the past year has shown us that this virus can be unpredictable, so if things get worse, there is always a chance we may need to make change to the recommendations."
5) There have been reports of thousands of cases of "breakthrough" infections among vaccinated people in the United States -- a tiny number among more than 117 million who are now fully vaccinated.

Yeah but transmissions is still very real.
6) Walensky noted that "the resulting infection is more likely to have a lower viral load, may be shorter in duration, and likely less risk of transmission to others."

Yeah but it’s about transmission of the virus to those who aren’t vaccinated. And transmission of VARIANTS!!
7) Other Caveats:
· This guidance does not apply to healthcare settings (e.g., hospitals, long-term care, doctors’ offices).
· This guidance also does not apply to correctional facilities or homeless shelters. CDC is updating our guidance for other settings.
8) · Fully vaccinated people should still wear well-fitted masks where required by federal, state, local, tribal or territorial laws, rules and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance
9) · If you travel, you will still be required to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations.
10) · Fully vaccinated international travelers arriving in the United States are still required to get tested within 3 days of their flight (or show documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 3 months) and should still get tested 3-5 days after their trip.
11) I want people to remember this Georgia nursing home outbreak— most people vaccinated… yet one carrier of the virus brought it to the heavily vaccinated nursing home… 1 death. See thread 🧵
12) Also, variants is an issue— while AstraZeneca vaccine isn’t used in the Us, in the UK, where #B117 prevalent, the AZ vaccine has much lower efficacy for asymptomatic B117 than symptomatic B117. Just FYI.
13) also THINK OF THE KIDS… tens of millions of kids aren’t vaccinated or even eligible yet… cough… #LongCovid @LongCovidKids… cough.
14) Even if you’re healthy… be the person who stops the transmission chain. Be a silent hero to others, not the silent transmitter.

15) I’ve talked to many doctors and public health scientists about this (emphasize on public health experts, not lab 🧪 experts), and many are saying its “bananas” 🍌
16) Once the floodgates open… you can’t close them again… especially if variants surge again.
17) How would grocery stores even verify someone is vaccinated? We already know focus groups of unvaccinated say they would lie / forge vaccine cards.

Are grocery stores gonna enforce vaccine cards upon entry? Doubtful.

We still need masks indoors.
18) let this sink in— if Singapore can’t hold back community outbreak, then is it really safe to lift mask rules and allow indoor dining? Singapore is a bell weather for the world.
19) What if we only did vaccines but no masks? Would it work???

…hell no. Read why below…. ⬇️
20) again, kids are unable to be vaccinated yet. Let’s protect kids. Mask up.
21) this is why we still need to mask below the threshold of sufficient vaccinations…. Asymptomatic transmission can still pass it to the vulnerable

BREAKING—Taipei, Taiwan 🇹🇼 has raised its local #COVID19 crisis rating to Level 3 alert for the first time, after 180 domestic transmission cases. Masks will now be required indoors & outdoors. 🇹🇼 has 23 mil people—first time exceeding single digit average daily cases in a year. Image
2) Under the CECC's four-tier alert system, a Level 3 alert means people are now required to wear masks at all times when they leave their homes, indoor gatherings of more than five people are not allowed, and outdoor gatherings are limited to 10 people.

3) A Level 3 alert, which has been in imposed in Taiwan for the first time, stops short of a lockdown and goes into effect when more than three community clusters are confirmed in a week or over 10 domestic cases of unknown origin are reported in a single day.

KEEP WEARING THE MASK—We card-carrying epidemiologists (with formal doctorate in epidemiology) know what we are talking about. Vast majority of 700+ epidemiologists surveyed says we would keep wearing masks for 1 year or longer. #COVID19 #MaskUp

nytimes.com/2021/05/13/ups… ImageImage
2) “When federal health officials said on Thursday that fully vaccinated Americans no longer needed to wear masks in most places, it came as a surprise to many people in public health. It also was a stark contrast with the views of a large majority of epidemiologists surveyed.
3) “In the informal survey (of professional epidemiologists), 80 percent said they thought Americans would need to wear masks in public indoor places for at least another year. Just 5 percent said people would no longer need to wear masks indoors by this summer.

96% of critical care beds in Osaka Japan 🇯🇵 are full. Hospitals “overwhelmed”.

Olympics in 70 days? 🤷🏻‍♂️ #COVID19

2) Osaka, along with Tokyo and two other prefectures, will remain under a state of emergency called in late April until at least the end of this month, and another three regions are due to join them from Sunday, Japanese media reported on Friday.
3) the vaccine rollout for older people and other at-risk groups is only just picking up speed. About 3% of the population of 126 million have been inoculated so far, amid reports of problems with the vaccination booking system, queue-jumping by local politicians & businesspeople

⚠️BREAKING—Singapore 🇸🇬 returning to lockdown mode for one month as #COVID19 cases rise, many #B16172 variants. Indoor dining suspended immediately. Travel bubble with HK🇭🇰 now unlikely. 31% of Singaporeans have >=1 shot, 22% fully vaccinated. Still surge.
bloomberg.com/news/articles/… Image
2) 🇸🇬 is returning to the lockdown-like conditions it last imposed a year ago, banning dining-in and limiting gatherings to two people, as a rising number of untraceable virus infections pressures one of the most successful places in the world at Covid containment.

➡️YET STILL!
3) “A pattern of local unlinked community cases has emerged and is persisting,” the statement said. “We need to act decisively to contain these risks as any one leak could result in an uncontrolled resurgence of cases.”

Familiar? 80 years ago—one man (Wells) discovered viruses were airborne & UV light led to fewer sick kids. He was dismissed at the time—by chief epidemiologist of the CDC. The CDC panned the idea measles was airborne for many decades. They were dead wrong.
wired.com/story/the-teen… Image
2) The distinction between droplet and airborne transmission has enormous consequences. To combat droplets, a leading precaution is to wash hands. To fight infectious aerosols, the air itself is the enemy. In hospitals, that means expensive isolation wards and N95 masks for all.
3) “The books @linseymarr flipped through drew the line between droplets & aerosols at 5 microns. A micron is a unit of measurement equal to one-millionth of a meter. By this definition, any infectious particle <5 microns in diameter is an aerosol; bigger is a droplet.”

FACT: Asymptomatic cases can still spread the coronavirus to someone vulnerable.

Vaccinate but still try to protect others who cannot / unable / unwilling (yes, let’s protect them too). #COVID19 #empathy Image
2) But homes, schools, and businesses are not HBO TV show sets with unlimited testing budgets. How many transmissions will there be if we ditch masks too early? variety.com/2021/tv/news/b…
3) We also aren’t rich like the Yankees— 8th member, shortstop Gleyber Torres, is positive for #COVID19 in latest team outbreak. All 8 members are fully vaccinated, thus “breakthrough positives.” Too early to ditch masks. Think of others not vaccinated yet.forbes.com/sites/joshuaco…
