I regularly hear a mantra "Ukraine can't be a Nato member, there's war, and occupation". Well, this is not true. I'll try to explain (THREAD)
1) Sure, having Ukraine in Nato would demand a lot of responsibility from other Nato members. This is what many countries want to avoid.
2) But this is quite another argument! It can be your choice not to be responsible for peace+stability in Europe. But say this openly. Once again: the war in Ukraine does NOT mean, UKR cannot go into Nato.
3) Look at Germany. Decision to accept GER into Nato was taken in Oct1954.
4) In Oct1954, Germany was OFFICIALLY in state of war with the USSR, with thousands of German POWs in Soviet camps etc. About 30% of German territory was officially occupied by the USSR. There question of the border between Germany and Poland, CSSR etc. was open...
5) German government did not accept annexation of Eastern Prussia by the USSR, even issuing car plates for the region. The occupation of Eastern Germany was not accepted as well. German Basic Law (the Constitution) foresaw return of occupied territories back under German control.
6) From any perspective of those, who criticise the very idea of Nato membership of Ukraine, this was a disaster. I do not mention the issue, that Germany was the state that had started the WWII just 15 years ago.
7) Now we come to the question, why it was possible (and necessary!) to accept Germany in Nato - and why it is possible and necessary for today's Ukraine.
8) Nato is not an alliance for "good weather" as German say. It is a defensive alliance, designed to prevent very real wars.
9) Germany had been accepted in Nato not despite of the fact it had unstable borders and was in state of war with a mighty power - but BECAUSE of this fact. It was clear, that without the Nato umbrella, Moscow will attack Germany and start a new war, as Germany was too weak.
10) Nato membership for Germany was a clear sign of limits for Soviet expansion set by the West. This had raised the stakes of a (still very possible!) invasion extremely high and therefore prevented it. The reason why Ukraine should be accepted to Nato is the same. To keep peace
11) There is no honour and no wisdom in letting a weak partner face a real threat alone. A Nato membership for GER was a wise step and guaranteed peace in Europe for decades. A Nato membership for UKR could have the same effect. One thing is needed: a will to take responsibility.
12) Nato keeps peace in Baltic for 30 years. It is because of Nato why we don't have Russian army in EST, LV, LT, like we have it in BEL and UKR. And don't forget: EST had and still has its border disputes with RUS. It is not the border issues what keeps country away from Nato.
13) The only reason why a country which is ready to join Nato is not being accepted is the lack of willingness+courage+honour to expand the territory of peace and democracy. So let us be honest about this. This is not a question to Kyiv, it is a question to Washington and Berlin.
END of the THREAD
@HopkoHanna I am so sorry that Germany which had got all the benefits and security guarantees from its early Nato membership (as I describe in this thread), strictly opposes Ukraine's Nato membership, denying this country same benefits Germany had been granted with 60 years ago.

A Ukrainian radical leftist Volodymyr Ishchenko openly welcomes "confessions" of Belarusian political prisoner Raman Protasevych, made under tortures. He completely ignores threat of capital punishment for Raman. How can this person be a fellow of @tudresden_de and @AvHStiftung ? ImageImageImage
This week, Belarusian dictator Lukashenka has openly threatend Raman Protasevych with a capital punishment. Raman's girlfriend is taken hostage as well - and we know that Belarus uses rape as a terror tool against women. How may one attack Raman and other prisoners, knowing this? Image
Raman was presented by Belarusian propaganda TV making his “confessions” with clear signs of tortures in his wrists. We know that cutting blood supply to hands with handcuffs is a typical torture in BY. Is it ok for you @tudresden_de and @AvHStiftung to finance a fan of tortures? Image

Two Russian Northern Fleet major landing vessels of 775 project have entered the Black Sea. Each 775-project vessel can carry 10 tanks and 340 soldiers. In addition to 6 minor landing vessels from Caspian Fleet (each 100 soldiers) this is VERY dangerous.
interfax.ru/world/761787
In addition to its automatic guns, anti-air guns and anti-air missiles, each 775 vessel carries 2x725-Grad launchers capable to shot 80 122-mm rockets at once for up to 20 km.
So up to date Russia has brought to the Black Sea 17 additional naval vessels, incl. 8 landing vessels (can carry 1280 soldiers, 20 tanks) and 9 gun boats and rocket artillery boats. At the same time, the U.S. "deescalates" and stops its 2 destroyers from entering the Black Sea.

THREAD: what comes next amid Russian pressure on Ukraine? The situation is pretty volatile and covered with fog of war. Still, certain important factors are visible. I’d try to elaborate.
1) I believe, that the main moving factor behind Russian pressure is the lack of water on occupied Crimea. With 85% dependency from Dnipro river, Crimean water reservoirs are dried out after 6 years of annexing. In cities, water supply is rationed. This summer will be terrible.
1.1) Zelensky wanted to give Russia water (essential for occupation) months ago, but abandoned this idea as he has realized this would be end of his presidency. So Russia plans to take water by force. Why do I think it is only about water, not about revival of “Novorossia”?

Kremlin spokesperson Peskov says, annexation of Donbas "is not on Russia's agenda", commenting the speech of Kremlin top propagandist Simonyan yesterday in Donbas (Simonyan urged for annexation). Let me explain, why this can be seen as a confirmation, not as a denial (Thread) Image
The joke "it is not true, as long as not denied by Kremlin" is actually not a joke. There are numerous examples of Kremlin "denials" that in the fact were confirmations. The most prominent one - several Putin's speeches as he said, Russia has not territorial claims vs Ukraine
Putin has confirmed many times, Russia and Ukraine have agreed on the border; Russia has no intentions to annex Crimea; or Russia has never sent any military personnel to Crimea or Donbas - the latter statements have been revoked by Putin himself later.

Very disturbing news from Russia-occupied Ukrainian Donbas region. A draft "law" is under consideration in "DNR", that would extremely discriminate Ukrainian citizens who live in the region (about 1.5m people). Those who will remain in possession of Ukrainian citizenship... (1/x)
(2/x) Those who will stay in possession of Ukrainian citizenship and will not abandon it for a "DNR" one, would be banned from ownership rights of any property, and banned from entrepreneurship activities. Moreover, they can be arrested up to 30 days "for needs of identification"
(3/3) The "law" is a clear copy-paste from Russia-occupied Georgian region of Abkhazia. The "law" foresees a "transfer period" until 2025. This can be interpreted as a way to pressure President Zelensky and force him to a sort of agreement on a "union" and "recognition" of "DNR".
