HUGE!!! The Biden administration to buy 500 million doses of Pfizer #COVID19 vaccine to donate to the world, as US dramatically increases its efforts to help vaccinate the globe. Biden is slated to announce the plan at the Group of Seven meeting this week.

2) The Biden administration previously announced it would share at least 80 million vaccine doses with the world by the end of June.

3) Last week, the White House detailed plans for how it would allocate 25 million doses, with about 19 million of them being shared with Covax to distribute doses around the globe. Roughly 6 million shots would be shared directly with countries experiencing severe outbreaks.

4) More details— People familiar with the deal said the United States will pay for the doses at a “not-for-profit” price. The first 200 million doses would be distributed this year, and 300 million would be distributed by the middle of next year.

5) The Us has already contracted to buy 300 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The new agreement is separate from those contracts, bringing to 800 million the total number of doses the United States has agreed to purchase from the companies thus far.

6) White House coronavirus response coordinator, Jeffrey D. Zients, said Biden would use the “momentum” of the U.S. inoculation campaign “to rally the world’s democracies around solving this crisis globally, with America leading the way to create the arsenal of vaccines.

7) Last week, Mr. Biden said that the United States would distribute 25 million doses this month to countries in the Caribbean and Latin America; South and Southeast Asia; Africa; and the Palestinian territories, Gaza and the West Bank.

8) Those doses are the first of 80 million that Mr. Biden pledged to send abroad by the end of June; three quarters of them will be distributed by the international vaccine effort known as Covax. The rest will go toward urgent crises in places like India and the West Bank & Gaza

JUST IN—FDA decided that ~60 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson #COVID19 vaccine produced at Emergent (Baltimore factory) must be discarded because of possible contamination. But 10 million doses can be used with a disclosure warning. 🧵

2) FDA cannot guarantee that Emergent BioSciences, the company that operates the plant, followed good manufacturing practices. The agency has not yet decided whether Emergent can reopen the factory, which has been closed for two months because of regulatory concerns

3) For weeks the F.D.A. has been trying to figure out what to do about at least 170 million doses of vaccine that were left in limbo after the discovery of a major production mishap involving two vaccines manufactured at the site.

Vaccinations not required? Two #COVID19 cases on a Mediterranean cruise ship. CDC is also not requiring cruise 🛳 to sail with vaccinated passengers. Some cruises will, but Florida prohibits vaccine requirements & will fine cruise companies for asking 🔥

2) The first cruise from U.S. with paying passengers scheduled to sail in June. Celebrity Cruises ship will require everyone age >=16 to be fully vaccinated—which conflicts with a Florida law that says businesses can’t ask for proof of vaccination status. washingtonpost.com/travel/2021/05…

2) It’s critical to recognize that the #DeltaVariant is rising underneath the decrease of the #AlphaVariant #B117. Many have been complacent about this. But Delta is doubling every week now in 🇬🇧!

3) India 🇮🇳 doctors have been sharing concerns that #DeltaVariant is more severe / affecting more kids. Singapore 🇸🇬 MOH is also warning it is affecting children a lot.
