Hello all and a warm welcome to the next session of #Quality2021 - building a stronger foundation with a new definition of quality. We'll be hearing from Christina Krause and Ben Ridout
Christina asks, 'why define quality?' - more recently, we started to reflect around the history of British Colombia and what the evidence is saying #Quality2021
Christina explains the importance of considering indigenous peoples in British Colombia, and that we have a lot to learn from them about the history of the land. How can the history and teachings be used to inform how we define quality? #Quality2021
Most definitions of quality focus on a narrow view of health, says Christina. But we must focus on health AND wellness - quality is not merely the absence of disease #Quality2021
Dimension 1 of the new definition of quality is 'respect'. This is about honouring a person's choices, needs and values, says Christina #Quality2021
Dimension 2 = 'safety'. This is about not just avoiding harm but also fostering security. This includes cultural and psychological safety as well as physical safety, says Christina #Quality2021
Dimension 3 = 'accessibility'. The new definition of quality recognises that there are physical, financial, cultural and psychological barriers to receiving care, and overcoming these requires a 'welcoming entry', says Christina #Quality2021
Dimension 4 = 'appropriateness'. Care that is specific to a person's or community's context. Appropriate care is informed by evidence and best practice - we need to weigh the risks and benefits of interventions to prevent overuse / underuse #Quality2021
But in order to do this we need to reassess what is 'evidence' - we should be valuing forms of evidence such as oral histories and narratives as much as randomised controlled trials, says Christina #Quality2021
Dimension 5 = 'effectiveness'. This is about demonstrating continuous studying the results of care #Quality2021
Dimension 6 = 'equity'. Equity is demonstrated when every person has the opportunity to achieve their health and wellness goals regardless of social, economic or geographic location #Quality2021
Dimension 7 = 'efficiency'. The optimal and sustainable use of resources to yield maximum value. This includes thoughtful use of financial, environmental and human resources to deliver health and wellness services #Quality2021
These seven dimensions of quality are placed within 5 areas of care - 1) optimising the early years 2) strengthening health & wellness 3) returning to health & wellness 4) living with illness/disability 5) coping with transition from life #Quality2021
Ben @BR4Quality is now sharing some practical examples of the new definition of quality in terms of planning, improvement, measurement and evaluation of services #Quality2021
