Good to see some balance in this article with some commonsense from @AlexWodak

However still some serious misinformation
FYI @janehansen2000
1. #vaping is not a Big Tobacco plot

-BT did not invent vaping
-Vapes are a direct competitor to cigarettes and are a huge disruptive threat to the industry
-BT is mostly focussed on #HTPs
-If BT switches from #cigs to #ecigs, that is good for public health. vaping is 95% safer
2. Popcorn lung has been long discredited

There has never been a single case of 'popcorn lung' from vaping or smoking, and diacetyl levels are hundreds of times higher in smoke than vapour

@CRUKLondon laid this to rest years ago
bit.ly/3iBt6Wk
3. EVALI

It is now clear that 'EVALI' was due to contaminated illicit THC oils. Not a single case has been linked to commercial nicotine vaping. Some denied THC use, most likely because it was illegal

Maintaining doubt is harmful to public health
bit.ly/3gwsGxM
4. Most kids who vape have smoked first

(Note to Ms Bittoun)
-Most teens smoke b4 vaping
-Kids who vape are risk-takers and are more likely to smoke, drink etc
-Regular vaping is rare in non-smokers
-Vaping is diverting far more youth away from smoking

bit.ly/3iBXz6W
5. Nicotine and the adolescent brain

(note to Ms Bittoun)
-Nicotine may harm rodent brains in lab studies
-There is no evidence that nicotine harms the human adolescent brain
-No evidence that hundreds of millions adults who smoked as teens have brain damage
6. Addiction to nicotine

(note to Ms Bittoun)
-Dependence on nicotine is rare in non-smoking youth who vape (West 2019; RCP 2021)
-Smoke contains other chemicals that make nicotine more addictive
-Most non-smokers vape infrequently and are at low-risk
-Many do not use nicotine
7. Vaping does not cause seizures

-Nicotine overdose can cause seizures
-There is no evidence that vaping causes seizures with normal use
-Even smoking does not cause seizures!

Suggested reading: bit.ly/2RSkoZ2
8. Finding a balance

-Kids should not vape and illicit sales should be policed
-But harsh restrictions on vaping because of small or potential risks to youth will reduce access for adult smokers for whom vaping could be life-saving

1/There is so much wrong with this article

▪️Only anti-vaping views quoted
▪️Extensive misinformation not challenged
▪️No alternative views offered

Can I have a right of reply @Dana_Adele

Thread...
smh.com.au/politics/feder…
2/ nicotine is highly addictive

The addictiveness of nicotine depends on how it is delivered. Smoking is highly addictive due to rapid nicotine delivery and other chemicals in smoke. Vaping is significantly less addictive than smoking
3/ doctors should be focused on getting people off cigarettes and nicotine completely

Ideally yes. But many smokers can't quit nicotine and switching to a safer alternative is lifesaving. The focus of #THR is reducing disease, not ceasing nicotine

1/4 BULLSHIT ALERT

@SarahWhisar from @quitvic says the claim that vaping is 95% safer than smoking is a guesstimate from a workshop

FACT
It is based on comprehensive, peer-reviewed reviews of the scientific evidence by @RCPLondon and @PHE_uk
bit.ly/30NQ0PO
2/4 "95% safer" is a realistic evidence-based estimate to guide the public on the relative risk of vaping compared to smoking

Research shows switching
▪️dramatically reduces toxins
▪️greatly reduces toxic biomarkers of exposure
▪️improves health

athra.org.au/blog/2019/12/2…
3/4 Why don't @quitvic and @CancerCouncilOz support vaping?

▪️Smoking is the largest risk factor for cancer
▪️Vaping is estimated to be <0.5% the cancer risk of smoking
▪️Most of the carcinogens in smoke are absent from vapour or in very small amounts

1/ @SimonChapman6 was on @abccanberra this morning with @adammshirley creating fear and confusion about #vaping. Let me clarify a few points.

Starts 17m20s
abc.net.au/radio/canberra…
2/ "We don’t know what the long-term consequences are going to be”

It is beyond reasonable doubt that #vaping will be far less risky than smoking. @RCPLondon estimates that the long-term risk is likely to be no more than 5% of the risk of smoking
3/ “Very easy to get nicotine for #vaping from the doctor”

Actually no. The process is
▪️Complex & time-consuming for GPs
▪️Delayed by @TGAgovau approval
▪️Importing by a 3rd party
▪️Import permit needed
▪️Much more costly

It will be easier to go next door and buy a cigarette!

1/ Well, this is embarrassing!

Anti #vaping groups congratulate themselves aon the #nicotine import ban, THE DAY BEFORE it was reversed

Numerous factual errors need correction

@tobaccofreeaust @CancerCouncilOz @heartfoundation @_PHAA_

bit.ly/2ZeC1lb
2/ "tobacco industry application to relax poison controls and greenlight the sale of novelty tobacco products being heavily promoted to young people in the US"

NO. This is for heated tobacco products NOT #vaping. #HTPs have been approved by the FDA.
Please learn the difference
3/ "unfounded claims about the benefits of #ecigs in smoking cessation"

NO. The evidence is very clear that vaping is more effective than other quitting aids and could significantly reduce Australia's smoking rate

@SimonChapman6 and @AlexWodak were interviewed on #vaping on @abcadelaide this afternoon

Certain misinformation provided during the interview needs to be corrected

2/5
'The 95% safer figure is a factoid based on opinion'

WRONG. This is based on comprehensive reviews by @RCPLondon and @PHE_uk. It is consistent with the substantial reduction in toxins, the reduced biomarkers and improved health in smokers who switch
athra.org.au/blog/2019/12/2…
3/5
'Long-term risk. It took 40 years to find out the effects of smoking'

Science has come a long way since then. Smoke contains >7000 chemicals, vapour <300. Chemicals in vapour are mostly <1% concentration in smoke. @RCPLondon says the long-term risk is <5% risk of smoking.

@SarahWhisar says about #vaping 'The 95% factoid was a consensus OPINION reached by a small panel, some of whom had conflicts of interest - it is not at all evidence-based'

My response in the thread below
1/8 With respect Sarah, that is a misleading response which omits the full story. The 95% figure was first developed by leading experts based on the best available evidence at the time in a validated MCDA process. @ProfDavidNutt replied to the criticism
bit.ly/32dPV76
2/8 It was then independently confirmed by @PHE_uk in 2015 and 2018 based on
The toxins in smoke
1. are most absent from vapour
2. Those present are mostly <1% of smoke
The main chemicals that are in #ecigs-only are not associated with any serious risk
