Most have invoked Orwell when raging against draconian lockdowns & mask mandates.
It is easy to see the parallels:
Militaristic enforcement to ensure compliance, censorship, Newspeek, etc.
However, I think that we also need to consider Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World".
1/...
Brave New World was published 17 prior to "1984" - yet has many parallels to our current culture - and to our government's overzealous, oppressive & unscientific response to CV-19.
2/...
Beyond Huxley's brilliant portrayal of a dystopian future obsessed with sexual gratification, mindless pop-culture entertainment, & technological advancement...
3/...
...the totalitarian rulers in BNW do this not by oppressing their citizens but by giving them exactly what they want, or what they think they want - & lulling them into complacency.
In our present day, those blinded by fear - want, or think they want, absolute safety.
4/...
They want safety from illness & death.
And they have been conditioned by fear to want this unreasonable expectation of safety at ANY cost - to the point where they have been lulled into accepting the pain of the "ANY cost" as their #NewNormal
5/...
That "unreasonable expectation of safety" is #COVIDZero
In Ontario, this kind of delusional & magical thinking is propagated by people who have the ear of (& some control of) our Premier @fordnation & our Minister of Health @celliottability
6/...
People like @DFisman who apparently think that we should never get sick, & never die.
And of course, in this magical world - the economic, social, educational & mental health devastation his recommendations caused would have never happened.
7/...
But hey #Ontario
I know that most of you will not critically analyze these points - if you ever even read them.
So go ahead.
Take your carrot.
Dip it in some "Soma"
...& be lulled into complacency - while everything that made life enjoyable, meaningful & worth living is stripped away, while people who live in an imaginary world create a Brave New World for you & your children to live in.
9/...
A Brave New World that smothers you in your blissful sleep before you can wake up & return to living again.
For the rest of us...
Living is more than just existing!
Time to start living again! #WakeUp
A few hours ago, the Ottawa Citizen posted an article "Front-line hospital workers say they feel betrayed by the province."
(ottawacitizen.com/news/local-new… )
However, this (clearly) union-fueled article completely missed the mark.
1/...
Yes, we are feeling worn down and betrayed by the Governments of Ontario & Canada.
But we are feeling worn down and betrayed NOT by the pandemic (aka the disease itself) - but by the governments' response to it:
1) that has:
- riddled our children with fear,
2/...
- riddled our patients with fear,
- riddle our employers with fear,
- paralyzed those outside our hallowed halls with fear...
2) that has lead to myopic, singular-focused government & public health policy - that has:
8 things to think about as we head into a new week:
1) Reminder: "Hospitalization", "ICU" & "Deaths" are all subsets of the total number of "Cases" - & are subject to the same case definition.
- The case definition only requires...
1/...
...a recent "positive" test result (NO symptoms required).
- This means that neither "Cases", "Hospitalizations", "ICU" nor "Deaths" require the person to actually have COVID-19 symptoms to be counted. #FactsNotFear
2/...
2) #BREAKING: Viruses do NOT care about your feelings or how important your task is (or you feel that it is).
- If a virus so contagious and/or dangerous that the only way to protect yourself is to take precautions - then the level of risk does NOT...
"The Prime Minister and the Canadian delegation traveling to the UK and Belgium will follow strict public health protocols and procedures during their visit, while in-transit, and when they arrive home." pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-r… @JustinTrudeau : #DoAsISay
1000's of variants have been waxing & waning in North America for MANY, MANY months.
This is normal & EXPECTED in error-prone RNA replication.
...BUT, BUT BUT!!! It is MUCH more academically fascinating than clinically significant.
Too bad the #OST hasn't figured that out!
1/3..
@LysanderMurphy@DonaldWelsh16 He is indeed a hero!
But,...I try understand where they are are coming from. Misappropriation of Apartheid does a disservice to those who suffered through it & were deprived of basic human dignity via Gov't policy - far surpassing the Civil Rights Mov. My family was there.
1/...
@LysanderMurphy@DonaldWelsh16 Misappropriation of the Civil Rights movement does a disservice to those that were (earlier) literally enslaved & then still denied human dignity and rights.
2/...
@LysanderMurphy@DonaldWelsh16 Misappropriation of the Holocaust does a disservice to people who were specifically targeted for total eradication simply due to both their race & religion - and was a culmination of centuries of progroms and blood libels.
Given that...I can see where they are coming from.
