4/22. Now, let’s talk about the real business: Getting your first job!
My advice: become an “Application Machine”!
Yes, you need to focus on jobs you’re interested in. But you’ll need to send hundreds of applications to get one.
My advice: Spend at least 1 hour/day on it!
5/22 YOUR CV: Write several CVs and PhPs.
Adapt each one to the field in which you want to work in: Diplomacy; Human rights; International justice, Humanitarian aid, Development ...
6/22. For each CV, highlight your relevant experience in the specific field: relevant tasks in your past jobs or internships; specific courses or training in this field; languages spoken; relevant publications; references ...
Everything must be "tailor-made"!
7/22. If you do not have any relevant professional experience in the field, start your CV with your academic background.
If you already have some relevant professional experience or an internship, start your CV with this.
8/22. Don’t lie! This is both serious and stupid. Everything will be checked.
But do not hesitate to highlight what could be more interesting for the recruiter and to tone down what is less relevant for this particular vacancy.
9/22. YOUR COVER LETTER. Tailor it to each application, each organization!
Explain why you are interested in THIS particular organization, in THIS job! #dreamjob
10/22. More importantly show what you can bring to the organization.
Be concise and try to distinguish yourself by highlighting the most salient aspects of your CV!
IMO, your cover letter must answer to this specific question: Why you and not any of the 200 candidates?!
11/22. Spoiler Alert: If your cover letter is “Recruit me, I want to heal the world” it won’t work. It is not a beauty pageant!
The IO is looking for a candidate with skills for particular functions to assist in fulfilling its mandate. This is what you need to highlight!
12/22. There are A LOT of websites listing relevant vacancies in international organizations.
I have selected some of them below but my selection is far from being exhaustive. ⬇️
18/22. And of course most of jobs and internships in the United Nations 🇺🇳 are advertised here ⬇️ careers.un.org/lbw/Home.aspx
19/22. About the @UN , if your dream is to work in this organization, I will write a thread on this particular topic next week.
The recruitment process (CV, interviews) is a bit different, I will explain it more in detail next time. #staytuned#UnitedNations
20/22. A great way to get a first job in the UN is to apply to the @UNVolunteers Program. As the name does not suggest, UNVs are interesting and remunerated early career field jobs. unv.org
21/22. Check also with your government for Junior Professional Officers positions. JPO are UN young professional positions (P1 or P2) financed by donor countries.
A great way to enter the UN!
22/22. So much for the tips of the week! Do not hesitate to share this thread or to pass on my advice to your friends or fellow students who could be interested.
Next thread on the UN application process and its specifics.
In this thread, I will explain everything about the recruitment process and share my tips and advice! 🧵👇
2/30. The recruitment process at the @UN is unique. In this thread I will describe:
✔️Specificities of the @UN (3-11)
✔️Where can you find vacancies? (12-13)
✔️ How can you apply? (14-20)
✔️How to prepare the written exam? (21-22)
✔️How to prepare the interview? (23-29).
3/30. Unlike other public services, there are hardly any permanent jobs at the @UN. This means that you will need to apply regularly during your career.
This creates a level of insecurity. In addition, field missions are sometimes difficult to deal with for your personal life.
✔️Comment postuler ? (14-20)
🇺🇳 Press release : #UNRWA is deeply concerned about actions by parties to the conflict during recent hostilities in #Gaza that caused damage to its installations and violated its inviolability and neutrality. ⬇️
“With no advanced warning, between 13 and 15 May 2021, the Israeli Air Force conducted strikes causing damage to #UNRWA installations, including Zaitoun School. The inner compound yard was struck by two missiles despite being designated as an emergency shelter for civilians
The strike calls into question respect for the fundamental principle of inviolability. Thankfully, no displaced persons were inside the school at the time of the strike and no physical injuries were caused.
THREAD 1/11. I recently tweeted - in French - my advice for those interested in a career in the field of Intl #justice or #HumanRights.🕊
I had positive feedback and thought it could be useful to do it in English. So here is the 1st one about finding a job in an Intl court. ⚖️🇺🇳
2/11. Let’s start by debunking some myths:
❌ No, finding a job in an international court is not impossible;
❌ No, you don’t need to go to an Ivy League college;
❌ No, you don’t necessarily need to have connections.
3/11. BUT YES!
✅ It will not be easy;
✅ You will need to be patient and dedicated;
✅ You will need to make some sacrifices;
✅ YES, you’ll succeed! 🥳
