A series of transactions for PPE procurements approved under Matt Hancock’s watch are being referred to the UK Serious Fraud Office on Monday by the @GoodLawProject.
These tweets cut to the heart of why this could be seen as criminal.
I.E. evidence suggesting deliberate efforts to conceal the nature of the transactions, and the identity of who was involved. Nothing that the Go-between here, Mr Jassal received 20 million pounds.
“Barnard Castle” fairy tale promulgator @Dominic2306’s, “it was all hands to the decks” explanation of this period does not hold water as an explanation for what happened in this case, and it is just one of many such odd cases. bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p…
In his thread @JolyonMaugham questions whether the SFO will open an investigation. Which appears reasonable given that the Home Secretary @pritipatel is one of the Ministers caught up in the intrigue.
Justice is supposed to be blind but rarely is in cases like this.
What is needed now is a wave of media attention & @MattHancock’s “resignation” provides justification for media to look at this more closely.
In the context of this PPE jeopardy, Hancock’s quiting over looks like a limited hangout. A distraction. A sacrifice to let off the pressure.
And not just for him but for the @BorisJohnson Govt. as a whole.
Nobody can seriously believe that this grifting operation on behalf of @Conservatives donors, which continues at pace with new, equally norm trashing, precedents including the sale of a peerage is Matt Hancock’s idea.
Day two of media coverage of the catastrophic events unfolding in the Tigray region of Ethiopia where the TDF has taken the capital city of Mekele back from Federal control.
The @guardian report from late last night, he subheading of which is << Government forces invaded Tigray in November sparking condemnation of prime minister >>, which is an absurd reading of what happened on November 4th 2020 when this war started. theguardian.com/world/2021/jun…
CNN's coverage is incendiary, especially yesterday's breaking video report mostly of older materia , the text report - which caries five bylines - including @nimaelbagir, who appears with @jaketapper in the video version of the story. edition.cnn.com/2021/06/28/wor…
After embracing a fiction that Tigray was a straightforward humanitarian catastrophe, and Ethiopia’s fault. Today’s events show very clearly that the US and EU decision makers @JosepBorrellF and @SecBlinken spectacularly misread this conflict.
With the benefit of hindsight we can now see that the G7 finger pointing at Ethiopia on the eve of their first real democratic plebiscite, took place at a time when the TDF was making its final preparations for a full on offensive.
Witlessly they provided the TDF TPLF cover.
Tomorrow they will wake up to a significantly more dangerous security situation. Ethiopia may have agreed to a ceasefire but it would be naive to think that Isaias Afwerki will be willing to stand-down in the current circumstances.
The thing about this #HancockAffair is that Hancock, whilst failing, has been so loyal and tried so hard to do his job.
He’s like a puppy who’s just been put down for doing precisely what his master does all the time.
As for Dominic Cummings - who also has his prints on the knife in this political assassination - Hancock was only in this role, which he screwed up, because Cummings advised Boris to sack all the competent ministers.
Today's big picture shows a Western Sahara plume in the process of creating more significant storms in central Europe. Bottom left you can see today's #ArabianStorms.
These three images show the winds which are bringing the rains to Africa across the Indian Ocean. The first shows the view as of this morning, the 2nd a forecast for the 7th day and the last one the forecast for the 16th day.
The big picture for today shows a broad swathe of the North Western Hemisphere. Here in Europe we have rainclouds over most of Western Europe now. And more wet weather heading in from the West.
In the East the monsoon is still strengthening and we have #ArabianStorms yet again.
This morning we had a lovely clear view of the #HornOfAfrica from space courtesy of @NASA. The big cloud mass bottom right is mostly over Kenya.
