(Some batches are still being quality tested at the National Control Lab in Bloem)
4. How many more #COVID19 jab doses are coming?
Q 3: 8, 519, 940 #Pfizer doses; 9, 100, 000 #JnJ
Q 4: 6, 996, 600 Pfizer; 19, 100, 000 JnJ
TOTAL = 43, 716, 540 doses
(Source: @healthza's delivery schedule)
5. What is not included in nr 4 of this thread (the jabs we're getting)?
* We ordered an additional 10m #Pfizer jabs (when they’ll arrive = not yet announced)
* #JnJ still owes us 500 000 jabs of the 2m they need to replace + 1m for Q2 (they were supposed to deliver 3m in Q2) .
6. Why are we not using our jabs quicker?
We have 7, 430, 510 doses, but by 28 Jun we had only used 2, 308, 225.
7. Reason 1: We’re saving some of the jabs for second #Pfizer doses, says @healthza’s Anban Pillay. For each 1st #Pfizer dose, a 2nd dose is stored in a warehouse of the company which delivers the jabs. We started with 2nd #Pfizer jabs on June 28.
8. How many 2nd #Pfizer doses have we used? @healthza’s dashboard doesn't tell us, because the figures combine all the doses (Pfizer 1st + 2nd doses + #JnJ doses).
9. Is there another way to figure out the nr of 2nd doses?
People who got jabs on 17/18 May were due for 2nd doses on Jun 28+29. How many people got 1st jabs on 17/18 May?
Dashboard data:
17 May: 14 705 jabs
18 May 36 961 jabs
So 51 427 people were due for 2nd jabs by 29 Jun.
10. Reason 2: Anban Pillay says the #EVDS allocates sites in cities within 10km of someone’s address + 30km in rural areas. When no site is available within that distance, the EVDS doesn’t assign sites. Up until now, there were areas without sites, so people didn't get scheduled.
11. Reason 3: Anban Pillay says because we’ve only had #Pfizer jabs until recently, many sites, e.g. in rural areas, that weren’t equipped to store Pfizer jabs, couldn’t do vaccinations. LP, MP, NC, EC will get more sites when we start to roll out #JnJ at normal sites.
12. When will we start to roll out #JnJ at normal sites vs. only to essential worker groups? Anban Pillay says this will happen when we receive JnJ jabs with longer expiry dates (the JnJ jabs we’ve received so far expire in August). JnJ hasn’t told us when we'll get more jabs.

[Thread] 1. How does @SAHPRA1 operate?
Helen Rees, board chair:
Governing Acts require Saphra to be: 1. Transparent, fair and objective 2. Allow Sahpra to co-operate with other regulatory authorities 3. Evaluate applications of all medical devices
2. @SahPra is an autonomous entity: 1. Sahpra reports to parliament, the health minister and the Sahpra board 2. The health min appoints Sahpra's board 3. The CEO makes operational decisions, not the board
3. Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela, @SAHPRA1 CEO: Sahpra is internationally recognised for its stringent standards. Part of the reason why the WHO has chosen SA to host the new #mRNA tech transfer hub (for #COVID vaccines), is because of the detailed, rigorous processes of Sahpra.
[Thread]1. For the next 14 days the following Level 4 level #lockdown measures will be in place: 1. All gatherings, both indoors and outdoors = prohibited (only funerals = allowed, no more than 50 people) 2. Beaches and parks will remain open, but no gatherings
3. Curfew = 9pm to 4am 4. Sale of alcohol, both onsite and offsite is prohibited 5. Travel in and out of provinces for leisure is prohibited (business travel is allowed) 6. Restaurants are only allowed to sell takeaways (because patrons can't wear masks while eating)
7. The winter school holidays will be brought forward: Schools will close from Wed, 30 June and all schools have to be closed by the end of this week 8. Contact classes at tertiary institutions will end on Wed
[Thread] #CyrilRamaphosa: Along with other African countries SA has seen a massive resurgence of #COVID infections. The African CDC says a massive 3rd wave is developing across the continent. The Delta variant has now been detected in 5 provinces. bit.ly/2T9wFZu
2. #CyrilRamaphosa: The Delta variant is rapidly replacing the Beta variant in SA. It has been detected in: Free State, Gauteng, KZN, Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
The variant is twice as transmissible as the original form of the virus. So it infects far more people faster.
3. #CyrilRamaphosa : There is emerging evidence that people who have been infected with the Beta variant are not protected against infection by the Delta variant. So they can get reinfected.
[Thread] JUST IN
1.@Min_JCS has started to vaccinate employees @ #COVID. Who qualifies (for now)? 1. #HealthWorkers employed by correctional services 2. Officials of 60+ 3. Inmates of 60+
2. Who at correctional services has been vaccinated so far?
By 24 June:
* 797 #HealthWorkers (this is 77.9% of HCWs at correctional services)
* 537 inmates of 60+
* 90 officials of 60+
3. How many #vaccination sites does correctional services have? 90.
Where do they get the jabs from? @healthza says they’ve allocated some of the 1.2 million #JnJ shots that arrived in SA on Thu to correctional services (and also the police). The jabs expire in early Aug.
[Thread] 1. How does @SAHPRA1 make decisions? Helen Rees says Sahpra is an independent regulator and makes decisions based on science. It assesses if #COVID vaccines are safe and effective and if manufacturing processes are of a high quality.
2. Helen Rees: A recent survey showed 70% of people in SA are confident to take a #COVID vaccine. 30% were unsure. If we are doing to build confidence in vaccines, it's crucial that @SAHPRA1 does it job well so that people know the jabs approved are safe and effective.
3. Helen Rees: SA is currently rolling out 2 #COVID vaccines (#Pfizer and #JnJ). The country is likely to roll out more brands in the future. But with new variants it is NB to ask the question: Will these jabs work against the new variants? It's Sahpra's job to assess that.
[Thread] 1. This graph shows how the Delta variant is spreading in SA (the green dots = the Delta variant). The yellow dots are the Beta variant, which has been dominating up until now. @Tuliodna says the Delta variant is likely to start dominating the global #COVID19 pandemic.
2. The Delta variant spreads faster than any other #COVID variant, including the Beta variant. It spreads 2x as fast as the original form of SARS-CoV-2 and 30-60-% faster than the Beta variant. It has been detected in 85 countries and causes 95% of infection in the UK.
3. The Delta variant is likely to dominate SA's #COVID19 pandemic. It presents a higher risk of reinfection, but there's no evidence that it reduces the efficacy of vaccines. The Delta variant is likely why we're seeing so many more infections in SA's 3rd wave vs. the 2nd wave.
