Few days back, came across the thought that future generations will be surprised that we could manage a vaccine for a pandemic so quickly and yet could not manage equitable distribution for the vaccine. A 🧵 on potentially what else about the pandemic would surprise 1/
2) That it took so long for public health bodies to accept the fact that a respiratory tract infection, that can be exhaled by infected individuals, can also be inhaled by vulnerable individuals.
3) That the idea of #filtering the air we breathe (#masking) could be so controversial
4) That masks with better #fit and #filtration would not be accepted to be better protection - FFP3 vs FRSM
5) That the whole idea of providing the best available protection to health care workers will be dragged along for over 1.5 years.
6) That unlike the Operation Wrap speed for vaccines, there was no significant effort to ramp up production of better quality masks or for producing a good filtration, reusable, well fitting mask. h/t @paul_hammant
7) That the idea of using HEPA filters to clean room air would be considered controversial
8) That poorly ventilated indoors would be considered the aberration, while every existing evidence points to poor ventilation being a widespread problem
9) That precautionary principle was so difficult to implement when dealing with a pandemic
10) That precautionary principle was not considered appropriate when dealing with children's health
11) That a lot of people wanted schools open, but no one wanted to take the time to improve the indoor environment of those classrooms so that infections could be mitigated.
12) That people want to discuss vaccine equity as soon as they became available, but there was no outcry over information inequity when the #airborne nature of #Covid19 was not clearly communicated to the public.

Oh, thank you for disillusioning us. I thought modern medicine already had solved the problem of immortality and all of us were just too smug to consider it 1/
The problem with statements like this is they want to reduce medicine into disease care and forget about health care. 2/
If small measures like living in well ventilated spaces, wearing a mask when not feeling well, filtering air when there are pollutants can help keep people healthy, they are worth investing in, pandemic or not 3/

The word Swaraj is a sacred word, a Vedic word, meaning self-rule and self-restraint, and not freedom from all restraint... - M K Gandhi
"Freedom" should mean freedom to wear a mask to protect the society you are part of
"Freedom" should mean the self-restraint to stay indoors if you do not need to go out
"Freedom" should mean avoiding crowding to protect yourself and others

I will tell you the story of an open #window which did not work, from personal experience. Short 🧵on prescriptive vs performance based guidance 1/
2) Over the past 8-10 months, I have force-fed family members and close friends my opinion on how #COVID19 is #Airborne and so irrespective of govt. or public health bodies guidance, they are more or less aware of preventive measures that could work.
3) So, they are aware of the need for ventilation and why it works. They know they need to open a window and why they need to do so (not just because "I told you so").

The Principal Scientific Adviser, Govt. of India
@PrinSciAdvGoI came out with guidelines on mitigation yesterday. A short 🧵delving further into them 1/

2) This is not the first mention of ventilation related guidance from Govt. of India

3) #Ventilation related guides have been there since past year.
However, they were not highlighted as much.
And people were not told why to ventilate.
