The continual references to “with the benefit of hindsight” are simply not going to wash.

There are far too many of us who know EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED & tragically STILL IS.

1/19…sorry!

@BorisJohnson @10DowningStreet @Conservatives @Jeremy_Hunt @SC_HealthSocial @Keir_Starmer
Mr Johnson may feel a degree of safety hidden away from scrutiny on holiday, but there are literally 1000s of us who’ve been begging for a pragmatic, intelligent & compassionate response to #COVID19UK - we will not go quietly!

@AppgCoronavirus @LaylaMoran @CarolineLucas

There’s only so much insensitive, offensive & ignorant bluster we will tolerate…HONESTY & ACCOUNTABILITY are needed now.

The buck stops at the doors of @10DowningStreet, or maybe a luxury villa in #Marbella🤔?

A quiet inclusion that #Covid19 is #airborne and trying to move on is not enough. It is okay to admit you were wrong if you want people to trust you ever again. Not doing so leads to unfair situations 1/
I am focusing on one such situation here that I shall refer to as droplet masking vs aerosol masking 2/
Masks under your nose - breathing, in itself also generates aerosols. It does not have to be big drops expelled from your mouth. So, cover both mouth and nose 3/ Image

A short thread explaining #airborne precautions for a #layered approach of mitigation against #COVID19
Keep in mind that multiple layers is a key need. The more layers, the lower your risk 1/
2) Source elimination is always the first step we think of when dealing with an #airborne problem - no risk without an actual source in the space.
Again, these steps need not be perfect, but they reduce the chances of an infectious person being in the room.
3) Source control - when we cannot eliminate the source, we try to control it. It could be direct - like masks, use packed lunches, and it could be indirect like keeping a control on community levels using vaccination and surveillance like waste water testing

For anyone who hasn’t realised just how deep the #BackToNormal lunacy runs, take a look at some of the “nearly 50” @Conservatives who are actively supporting @UsforThemUK’s dangerous & irresponsible campaign to make 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools #COVID19 MITIGATION-FREE!

1/12
The ring-leader is @SteveBakerHW, of #CRG AND #ERG fame. Neither he or his #CRG mate @Mark_J_Harper appear to have any understanding of #airborne viral transmission.
Mr Harper’s clearly also a fan of the unscientific & reckless #LivingWithCovid mindset.

2/
But it’d be unfair to give @halfon4harlowMP ALL the credit for causing unnecessary harm & suffering.

Several other high profile @Conservatives are members of the @UsforThemUK support group.

Some of the “usual suspects”-

This is v disturbing from @halfon4harlowMP
Could it represent a CHILD SAFEGUARDING ISSUE on a NATIONAL SCALE?
It’s clear that the CHAIR of @CommonsEd has absolutely no understanding of the significance of the #COVID19 #DeltaVariant & is a cheer leader of #COVIDIsOver idiocy!
1/9
Watch it for yourself….his entire focus is on PRE-PANDEMIC “NORMALITY” for SCHOOLS, pushing back against bubbles, any sort of restrictions & makes no mention at all of how to protect CV/CEV children, families or staff as cases rise.
@ChildrensComm @Rachel_deSouza @cv_cev
2/
His views on consent for 12-15yr olds are obvious.
Is it possible he will be able to intervene in @CMO_England’s decision?
Does he have training in advising <16yr olds on such important matters?
Has he even heard of #GillickCompetency?

If we consider the age groups of schoolchildren & their parents & the overall numbers of #COVID cases currently, the return to 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools will almost certainly result in a rapid increase in infections that is avoidable, unnecessary & predictable.
1/9 ImageImageImage
That the vast majority of schoolchildren <16yrs have been DENIED ACCESS to an @MHRAgovuk approved vaccination & that the #JCVI assessment did not include deaths from #COVID, #LongCovid, effects on parents/close family, educational disruption etc is shocking in itself!
2/
How can the #JCVI not consider at all that most schools have zero effective mitigations to ⬇️transmission of #airborne🦠s & that children/staff will no longer #WearAMask , putting schoolchildren & unvaccinated staff at significant risk of exposure to #coronavirus 5/7 a week?

The thread from April👇🏼 is especially relevant as 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools reopen w/ almost ZERO MITIGATIONs to ⬇️#coronavirus transmission/protect people.

Sept 1st 21 -“numbers” many English ppl have become immune to, a stark reminder of a @Conservatives brutal #LivingWithCovid “policy”.
1/16
Almost 36,000 new cases.
842 hospital admissions.
207 deaths.

That is roughly 37,000 individuals/families affected by #COVID, yesterday alone!
And potentially 3,600 more cases of #LongCovid to boot!

This is what #LivingWithCovid looks like folks!

@sajidjavid @JonAshworth
2/
And by pure coincidence this is what a lazy, ignorant, selfish, cruel & greedy “strategy” against a global pandemic looks like too.

It is NO ACCIDENT!

This is the purest form of #SurvivalOfTheFittest, a plan so grotesque I didn’t think it possible in modern Britain.

I’m sorry, but this needs to be said. As a layperson who follows #epitwitter a great opportunity is being missed to explain #Airborne spread of #COVID19 to regular, everyday people:

farts
You can’t see a fart, but everyone knows how a #SBD can sneak up on you, especially if your dad’s been eating nachos. You can get attacked from across the room! And it can even follow you on a draft if you run out fast enough. Brutal, Dad.
How about when you’re sitting in class and one by one, your classmates clutch their faces in wide-eye terror, fake cough, turn around and glare. Some of them even Beyond. Six. Feet. #closecontact

Mr Williamson, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to contain my horror at #DfE plans for the return to 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools this week.

Such insincere tweets are deeply offensive to anyone who’s been personally affected by serious acute #COVID, #LongCovid or been bereaved by it.
1/14
Suggesting schools “get back to a greater sense of normality…” during a pandemic of an #airborne 🦠reveals a marked lack of scientific understanding of the issues & is an utterly disingenuous way to present the situation to parents & children who deserve far better.
2/
And to those of us caring for patients to w/ #COVID19 whilst simultaneously trying to tackle the ever growing mountain of non-#COVID care (STILL in sub-optimal #PPE) it is a huge slap in the face.

*Fantastic* deep review by Wang et al. shows why conversations about #airborne viruses are so important -- not just now or for COVID, but also for many other respiratory diseases.

3/ "Given all that we have learned about SARS-CoV-2 infection, the aerosol transmission pathway needs to be reevaluated for all respiratory infectious diseases."

The ONLY WAY to make any sense of the changes to isolation policy, in combination w/ the removal of virtually all mitigations across 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿society, is that the @PrimeMinister @sajidjavid & @10DowningStreet ACTIVELY WANT ppl to catch AND spread #coronavirus.

@dgurdasani1 @TimesRadio
They WANT “US” to “GO NOW” rather than later in the Autumn/winter….that’s YOU & ME!

No matter how many ppl are doubly vaccinated, COMPLETELY UNMITIGATED TRANSMISSION/SPREAD will inevitably effect ppl in all age groups.
GOING NOW may sound BIG & BRAVE to those that haven’t followed the pandemic closely, but for anyone w/ even the slightest understanding of what’s really going on, it equates to pouring several large cans of petrol onto the UK #COVID 🔥, whilst simultaneously turning the 💦 off!

Dr Musgrave, being the subject of a pile-on is unpleasant to say the least so it would be wrong to continue further, but I urge you read the 2 articles I’ll attach & consider whether #UsForThem are the sort of group you really want to show support to as a Dr.

I could understand their perspective if we weren’t talking about a highly contagious #airborne 🦠which spreads best indoors in crowded, poorly ventilated spaces….SCHOOLS!

Everyone wants to see children in school, but the SAFETY of pupils, staff & families must be considered.
2/
Whatever your personal “views” on the risks to children as a whole, we know that HUGE NUMBERS of individual children, families & staff have been affected by acute #COVID19, #LongCovid, bereavement & the many other negative outcomes associated with #COVID19UK being so bad.

A thread 🧵

Delta is concerning but vaccinations are protective, so less likely to end up in hospital / ICU or morgue.
Lambda, on the other hand, has been shown to evade vaccines entirely.
It was a huge mistake (as I predicted) to rely on a vaccine. 1/
Why? Because coronaviruses are notorious in their ability to mutate, and mutate quickly. It is the same family as the common cold. Recall catching a cold more than once in a year, sometimes back to back? Mutations allow it to circumvent your immune system by mutating. 2/
It was only a matter before the current vaccines would become useless against emerging variants. Vaccinating at least 80%, globally, and rapidly, before another mutation pops up *may* have worked, but you can imagine why this simply can’t happen 3/

So, a 2005 blueprint to fight an #airborne #virus arriving in Britain was lost, filed away in Whitehall, and apparently never used.

Now uncovered, its recommendations included limiting travel and stopping ‘super-spreader’ events - lessons not learned.

The @Independent reports that, 'One senior medical adviser who served in Downing Street throughout the last decade said they were “totally surprised” to learn of the blueprint, despite having worked in emergency health planning and pandemic preparedness'.

independent.co.uk/news/health/co…
The @Independent reports that 'the 2005 plan put together by the #DoH, warns of spread via “finer aerosols of infectious respiratory secretions, which stay in the air longer than droplets”, meaning it can be passed from one person to another through the nose, mouth or even eyes.'

I’m not sure who to report this to, but YET AGAIN @halfon4harlowMP, the CHAIR of @CommonsEd is OPENLY LINKING HIMSELF to #UsForThemUK who are #antimask #antivax, anti - ANY #COVID mitigation in schools.

#UsForThemUK are linked to #CRG & other @Conservatives MPs, #HARTGroup & others, who’re relentlessly spreading #CovidDisinformation in the name of putting “children first”.

They’re part of a web of ANTI-MITIGATION “campaigners” who want schools to open in Sept WITHOUT ANY PROTECTIONS against #COVID19 in place for 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿pupils, staff & families.

Every HT needs to know that the pupils in THEIR CARE, almost all of whom are unvaccinated, are NOT SAFE!

Morning @GavinWilliamson @NickGibbUK & @halfon4harlowMP - if you could put the Latin books down for a mo, there are millions of teachers, parents & secondary school pupils who’d be very interested in some answers.

Sadly, I suspect you won’t have any!

My guess is that you neither know or care how opening 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools up in Sept WITHOUT ANY MITIGATIONS for an #Airborne 🦠will affect the HUMANS forced each day to study/work INSIDE the schools, especially those who’re unvaccinated or CV/CEV.
2/
But as a Dr could I ask..

1)How many children w/ CHRONIC DEBILITATING SYMPTOMS will worry you?

2)How many VERY SICK children is too many?

3)How many SICK STAFF will stop schools functioning?

4)How you will know the number of CV/CEV children who’ve been vaccinated by Sept?

Engineers need to go on record with their employer when they have identified a safety concern. They may have limited options to affect change, but they do have a duty to report it up the chain of responsibility. Write that memo. Come away with a clear conscious. /3

Do we need to remain in lockdown (forever) if #COVID19 herd immunity is not reached? **NO**

We have many measures to *control* the spread of infectious diseases.

Please read and consider sharing.

#epitwitter #onpoli #AcademicTwitter
2/14

Herd immunity is when a significant proportion of the population becomes immune (through vaccines and prev. infection) to an infectious agent (e.g., virus), making the spread of the disease unlikely. As a result, the whole community becomes protected.
3/14

While herd immunity may never be achieved, we still see significant *herd protection* through vaccine and natural immunity.

Few days back, came across the thought that future generations will be surprised that we could manage a vaccine for a pandemic so quickly and yet could not manage equitable distribution for the vaccine. A 🧵 on potentially what else about the pandemic would surprise 1/
2) That it took so long for public health bodies to accept the fact that a respiratory tract infection, that can be exhaled by infected individuals, can also be inhaled by vulnerable individuals.

1/10 How fortunate to have both @lensiseethrough & @JuliaHB1 in one place together!

Molly, Julia & @UsforThemUK - Let’s put the physical risks of #COVID19 & #LongCovid to individual children & adolescents to one side for a moment.
2/ And let’s also ignore the devastating effect on any child, of a close family member having serious #COVID19, #LongCovid or dying from #COVID.
3/ And for completeness let’s just forget that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US wants to “get back to normal” & for the final restrictions to be safely eased…..

LET’S FOCUS SOLELY ON EDUCATION!

1/9 Dear @adilray, you & @susannareid100 are 2 of few presenters prepared fo challenge government rhetoric.

Can you ask @MattHancock why, in the face of ⬆️cases & hospitalisations of the #DeltaVariant, schools have virtually no mitigations to ⬇️transmission of an #airborne🦠?
2/ Children account for a significant proportion of ⬆️cases (10,000+ today) & can transmit #COVID19 to their families.

A worrying number of children have got #LongCovid (maybe 10%) & campaigners are trying to prevent them being vaccinated.
CV/CEV kids are a particular concern.
3/ There are several weeks of term left & ⬆️numbers of schools have outbreaks, risking not only the health of pupils, staff & families but also MORE EDUCATIONAL DISRUPTION.

WHY are the lives of CHILDREN being dismissed so callously?

WHY is NOTHING being done to protect them?
