Ardhendumauli Kumar Prasad welcomes Judges of the Supreme Court, Attorney General for India KK Venugopal, SG Mehta, Senior Advocates and Justice Ashok Bhushan: We are here to celebrate Justice Bhushan's 42 years of experience at the Bar
Senior Advocate Pradeep Kumar Rai, Vice President of SCBA delivers his speech: Justice Bhushan was born in Jaunpur and was eldest among his siblings. He was a very good listener and encouraged junior members, lady lawyers and newcomers.
Rai: He has delivered many verdicts upholding equality. He has been a firm judge with a strong conviction, I remember a matter relating to Noida land allotment. This case was in Allahabad HC and CJ AN Ray delivered a judgment but Justice Bhushan dissented
Rai: He was a darling of the Bar. When he was elevated as a Chief Justice of Kerala HC, a huge gathering of bar saw him off at Allahadbad. He voiced concerns of the underprivileged. His judgment makes him a person who was a voice of common man. #supremecourt
AG KK Venugopal: I have recently read that Chief Justice Dickson of Australia listed out 5 good qualities of a judge. First one is integrity and there is no question on about Justice Bhushan.
AG: Then is legal knowledge, patience which Justice Bhushan has in abundance. The quality which he did nit mention was compassion. We are a welfare state with 200 million people below poverty line and Justice Bhushan will be remembered for his compassion for the underpriviledged
AG: i remember long lines of children walking, with mothers carrying their children, they were migrants and tears would come to one's eye. Justice Bhushan and Supreme Court came to the rescue regarding the distribution of dry ration and run community kitchens.
AG: Ayodhya, Aadhaar case, permitting passive euthanasia, are among his best judgments. His recent judgment about granting ex-gratia compensation to families affected due to covid will help so many people, We are loosing an excellent judge and we feel sad about it.
Sr Adv Vikas Singh, President SCBA: Today is an emotional moment since we are not only losing a great judge but also a great human being. His father was an eminent lawyer.
Sr Adv Singh: Justice Bhushan's father was considered for elevation to #SupremeCourt and unfortunately his father could not attend Justice Bhushan's oath-taking ceremony. Justice Bhushan remembers even members of lower judiciary whom he found endearing. He connects intimately
Singh: Two people recused from Ayodhya matter and that is how Justice Bhushan came there. Justice Bhushan had written that paragraph in Ayodhya judgment and the author was not named.
Singh: Justice Bhushan had written on the Hindu religion. It was said that the Hindu religion did not satisfy the narrow areas of other religions and was more of a way of life.
Singh: To think about the marginalized and give them so much relief shows his empathy for the people of the country. He also upheld the law on Aadhaar and decided the issue of Maratha Reservation and gave the judgment on shared household.
Singh: Justice Bhushan has read Tulsidas and Ramacharitamanas a number of times. Justice Bhushan travels mostly to religious places. #supremecourt
Singh: Justice Bhushan is fond of motichoor ke laddu and gulabjamun and will never suffer from diabetes. He believes that young lawyers should have a good heart. He is fond of Dilip Kumar and Nargis.
Singh: he knew the Supreme Court order was final but he never showed it to the lawyers. #SupremeCourt
CJI NV Ramana: There is a very famous german saying
"Man's feeling are always the most purest at the time of farewell" I am said that i am losing a colleague and i am happy he will be starting a new phase of his life. I feel happy to see a beaming Justice Bhushan with his family
CJI: deciding a case is not easy as one has to look at the precedent we set and make sure we are logical and lose sight of the people and their difficulties. Justice Bhushan's philosophy sets him apart. He has left a mark on people of India as a humanist judge
CJI: I understand the difficult days that are ongoing today. But always remember that the judiciary is always there for the Bar. Bar & Bench has to work it out together
Justice Bhushan: I have been true to my oath and discharged my duty without fear and favour. Protection and enforcement of constitutional rights is both power and duty of the court. Justice must be tempered with mercy but justice cannot be substituted by mercy
Justice Bhushan: I am proud to be part of this court which upheld democracy and rule of law. I remember my father from whom i learnt basics of law and professional ethics. From my mother i learnt the art of simplicity. I am also grateful to my friends at the bar.
Justice Bhushan: It has been my good fortune to receive such cooperation from my brother and sister judges in Allahabad High Court, Kerala High Court and here in Supreme Court. #supremecourt
Justice Bhushan: SCBA has played a great role in upholding rule of law. I express my sincere gratitude to Chief Justice NV Ramana and the former Chief Justices. There can be no doubt that i had an opportunity of a lifetime. My debt of gratitude to everyone. I enjoyed my work
Justice Bhushan: no one claim to be perfect as perfection is for God and all that we can try is to slowly do away without imperfections. This pain to leave Supreme Court is like a dark cloud with silver lining.
Justice Bhushan: Goodbyes are only for those with eyes. For the ones with heart and soul, there can be never any good byes.
Memento presented to Justice Ashok Bhushan by Sr Adv Pradeep Rai and members of the bar
