It’s 1 week since the #SurfsideCollapse
While yesterday was a “slower” day, rescue / recovery work had been halted due to unsafe conditions, I had time to reflect on the events that’ve transpired.
It’s hard to put into words what the families of those missing are going thru
1/
Waiting to hear news, anything
Yet in the midst of all the darkness there are those that shine brightly. We’re all watching the amazing USAR / ISAR teams swarming the pile a sea of blue and green working side by side in perilous conditions hoping to find something.. anything
2/
While all eyes are on them, there’s a streak of yellow, Yedidim. I’m in awe of the volunteers running up & down the streets of Surfside providing kosher food & drinks to everyone. Making sure every police, fire, USAR, Hatzalah, engineers. volunteer have fresh food / drinks
3/
Breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and everything in between. Every time you turn around they’re placing a cold drink in your hands.
A local church came to deliver to the “Jewish rescue workers” socks, Tshirts, energy bars, towels. cases of drinks. “What else can we bring you”
4/
Chaplains, Therapy dogs & handlers, mental health counselors, rabbis, priests, heavy rig drivers, police, fire rescue, USAR..teams of them. all walk with a somber look in their eyes yet greet each other warmly. All hear for a purpose. Each has their part in this tragedy
5/
Seeing this provides the strength & courage to keep going. Hot sweaty, tired, we all keep going, knowing we won’t stop until every person missing is found. Every family notified about their loved one(s). We hope and pray we can provide them the comfort of providing any news..
6/
When we hug the families they think we are comforting them, they’re actually giving us the strength to keep going. We are all leaning, encouraging each other knowing every single person is doing their part to finish the mission. To provide an ounce of comfort to the families

09.11.01 #Thread 8:46am @IWidroff & myself were clearing an emergency call in Midwood Bklyn when a call for “an explosion atop the #WTC “ We responded! Little did we know, at 9:03am a second plane hit the second tower, we were in the BBT at the time.. #NeverForget911
exiting the tunnel was like a scene out of an apocalyptic movie set flaming chunks of debris atop of smashed cars, convoys of emergency vehicles, sirens blaring all making its way to the #WTC
At that moment we knew this was no “small plane” accident into a building #September11
We staged at the corner of Liberty & West, together with countless other #Hatzolah#FirstResponders#FDNY & #NYPD units trying to determine how to help those trapped in the towers..chaos!
The panic as “another plane” was spotted flying in fast... #USAF F16 #USA was under attack
