When I did my motorcycle tour of the Southwest back in 1995 and I was approaching the Sonoran Desert, I worried that I would find it boring. It is one of the most interesting places I have seen. Beautiful colors and the most spectacular sunsets.

A thread on second- and third-order comments as research killers, related to a recent @bopinion post by @tylercowen. 1/n
I concluded long ago that the economics profession has been drowning in second- and third-order comments by journal referees. 2/n
Far too often, reports contain a plethora of requests of ancillary exercises and assorted minutiae, and editors—when they do not reject the paper—are so prone to just requesting that “all comments be addressed” (in the paper and/or in pages-long response documents) 3/n

@Claudia_Sahm Hi Claudia, you know I agree with you on substantive issues. But do you think your references to “mf macro men” (or even just “macro men”) instead of simply focusing on the substance of the disagreement helps you advance your point or improve the climate of our profession? 1/5
@Claudia_Sahm Why not just referring to them as “other macroeconomists”? After all, I think there are also female macroeconomists who agree with Summers. How does what you do help us remove sexism from our profession? 2/5
