“People are in a state of survival inside #Moria2,” says doctor* on #Lesvos, “once they are actually arriving in a safe space, we see them collapse. This on-going humiliation in semi-closed, overheated, undignified living spaces with no escape are breaking people’s mind.” /1
“Some might thing, once with a positive asylum decision, camp residents just want to leave #Moria2 to find a future, a better job or place, but the truth is, that most just want to run away and leave this black hole behind. Run from the experience of being a #refugee.” /2
“We have to facilitate people to flourish. To use their potential. But instead we create prison-like structures, with no trees, no shade, no schools, no carpets or movie nights, nothing individual should remain, no traces should be left. The unspoken aim: Vanish.” /3
“The #EU is basing its politics based on a punishing principle. The logic of a wall, a drone, the fences, a pushback, the whole surveillance body in itself is: if you come here, you did something wrong. You depend on our mercy.” /4
“Coming back to the Control mechanisms: There are currently 3-4 checkpoints before arriving at camp entrance. You need an appointment or paper to state your reason to leave the camp. Or to reach the medical tent up front. Doctors have a strict medical protocol to follow,” /5
“There has never been a bigger mental health crisis, as I can witness it now. People are shrinking. Their bodies. Their mind. Some stay paralyzed in tents. Especially the children, which cannot go to school or have distraction from parents stress and emotions,” /6
“I am not trying to dramatize things, when saying that I have seen patients who can be in a wheelchair from one week to the next, just because the trauma eventually shuts the body down. It cannot take it anymore. Here I see symptoms I have not seen in any other place.” /7

CN: Gewalt
3) Keine Elektrizität, also müssen viele mit Feuer kochen. /1
Roads to the new camp in #Lesvos are blocked. People are still allowed in & out of the camp. Another transfer of around 600 recognized #refugeesgr from the island to the mainland is planned today. #Moria
People are being transferred into busses in the side entrance of the new camp. A military truck is taking some of their belongings. Many people have dressed in their best clothes. Children excited to leave. “Where are we going” one woman asks policeman, “Ella!” he replies. /2
“They scream at the people inside quarantine camp, stay away, like animals. All of us animals. It’s enough. We only have us left.”
Inside the camp people remain without water, the promised WiFi or electricity. People with disabilities are not given precedence in food line. /3

❗️Thread: At 10am this morning one Syrian man was severely hurting himself in front gate of #Moriacamp — cutting with a knife in his wrists and chest. People were reporting that he tried to commit suicide. Police took him to medical station inside camp. /1 ⬇️
17,036 #refugeesgr are currently stuck in camp of #Moria, that is only made for 2,800 residents — while the rest of islanders are free to move, ppl have been left there in lock-town without sufficient medical care or legal assistance, no schools, no security. /2
The constant stress + structural violence creates a severe mental health crisis for all residents, even ppl who weren’t traumatized before, will be after one week here, residents report. Recognized refugees are fearing to be evicted in next week with no where to go to. /3
❗️The Asylum office was closed for 2 months on #Lesvos — with its first day on 18th May it issued 1,4000 rejection decisions to applicants of international protection. #refugeesgr have now 10 days to appeal, but no legal aid for drafting relevant case file. /1
Police has imposed fines of 150€ on inhabitants of #Moria who went to #Mytilini to turn to free legal aid organizations after they received the news. /2
This means an asylum seeker gets a rejection on his/her request. He/she is not allowed to leave the camp because of #Covid_19 movement restrictions for #refugeesgr in camps. He/she has only 10 days to appeal, wants to seek help from a lawyer, but all she gets is a 150€ fine. /3
