Story 33- it is about how Bhagwan Shiva as Sundareswarar gave Astama siddi Upadesham to Karthigai Pengal
அட்டமா சித்தி உபதேசித்த படலம்
Once 6 Karthigai Pengal/women - Nitharthani, Aparakhendi, Magendi, Vardhayenthi, Amba & Tula who took care & brought up Karthikeya/
Subrahmanya from time of his birth came to Mount Kailash.
At that time Bhagwan Shiva was sitting under a tree & Devi Parvati was also there.
Karthigai Pengal worshiped Bhagwan Shiva and requested him to give Astama siddi Upadesham.Bhagwan Shiva advised Karthigai Pengal to worship Devi Parvati to realise the 8 (Ashta) great mystic powers. But due to ill fate,Karthigai Pengal ignored the words of Bhagwan Shiva.
Karthigai Pengal neglected worshiping Parvati Devi, this angered Bhagwan Shiva. He cursed them to become rocks & lie under a banayan tree in a place called as Pattamangai.
Karthigai Pengal were shocked & regretted their mistake and asked for forgiveness.Bhagwan Shiva being merciful
told them to remain as rocks for 1000 years &after that he will come&give them salvation. After that he will also given Astamasiddi Upadesham to them.
Due this curse,Karthigai Pengal became rocks in a place Pattamangai &as time passed rocks were covered with leaves & soil. After a
long time when the time was right Sundareswarar appeared and touched those rocks ,releiving Karthigai Pengal from the curse.Karthigai Pengal without any arrogance or ego surrendered to Bhagwan Shiva & requested him to give Astamasiddi Upadesham.
The place Pattamangai is now known as Pattamangalam which around 8 km from Sivaganga,TN. Pattamangalam Dakshinamoorthy Kovil is a Guru Sthalam where Bhagwan Shiva gave Upadesham of Astamasiddi to Karthigai Pengal.
Astamasiddis are Anima,Mahima, Lagima,Garima,Prapthi,Prakasysm, Isithavam and Vasithavam.
Anima (shrinking) - Power of becoming the size of an atom & entering the smallest beings.
Mahima (illimitability) -Power of becoming mighty & increasing one's size without limit.
Lagima (lightness) -Capacity to be quite light though big in size.
Garima (weight) -Capacity to weigh heavy, but seemingly small size.
Prapthi (fulfillment of desires) -Capacity to enter all worlds from Brahma Loga. It is the power of attaining everything desired.
Prakasysm (irresistable will) - Power of entering into other bodies & going to heaven & enjoying what everyone aspires for, but from the same place where he stays.
Isithavam (supremacy) -Have the creative power of God & control over the Sun, the moon and other elements
Vasithavam (dominion over elements) - Power of control over Raja and Gods. The power of changing the course of nature & assuming any form.
Gyanis are capable of attaining these siddis, but they rarely use it as their first objective is to attain mukti.
Bhagwan Shiva disappeared
after giving this Astamasiddi Upadesham to Karthigai Pengal. Karthigai Pengal worshiped Bhagwan Shiva & Devi Parvati with great devotion. And they mediated to Parvati devi to attain Astamasiddis.
