Happy to share I have received a grant from the Pulitzer Center (@pulitzercenter) for a series of stories I'm reporting from Marathwada.

The series is examining the impact of #covid19 on some of the most marginalised sections of the society.
So far, at @PARInetwork, I have published eight stories that look at various fallouts after the second wave of COVID-19.

The rest of the series will be published in partnership with the Pulitzer Center.

Until then, just a recap of the stories we've done so far.
Cries for help have been flooding social media in the last few weeks.

But that is hardly an option in rural India, where people helplessly sit in the hospital, and hope for the best.

The #SecondWaveofCovid19 ominously penetrated rural areas.

It put journalists based in the hinterland at great risk, for it's difficult to find a decent hospital without traveling some distance.

This piece looked at how funerals are now more about logistics than loss.

In the absence of adequate public health infrastructure, people are compelled to go to private hospitals even when they can't afford to.

In Marathwada, a one time medical emergency is pushing farmers and labourers into permanant poverty

The 7th story in the series looked at how the Tuljapur temple -- with a turnover of Rs. 400 crores -- worsened #COVID19 crisis in Osmanabad.

"It was similar to the Kumbh, but on a smaller scale," said an official.

This is all too familiar.

Saw it during last year's migrant exodus. And seeing it now that the crematoriums are overwhelmed. The objective remains the same: protect the image of the emperor who stands naked.

#Thread
When we reported on the migrant exodus last year, we often got messages asking if we helped the people we quoted in our stories, or just "used" their misery.
The stupidity of it apart, the aim behind these messages is to absolve the Modi government and hold the messenger accountable instead.

Today, as the devastating images of bodies burning go viral, Modi bhakts are again blaming reporters for spreading "negativity".

If you haven't, do watch Nero's Guests. A documentary that should be essential viewing for times like these.
It concludes with P Sainath's speech where he shares a piece of ancient history involving Nero, the infamous emperor of Rome.

#Thread
When Rome burnt and Nero could not control the fire, he decided to throw a huge party to deflect attention from the fire. But there was no provision to illuminate the huge garden that was supposed to accommodate the laundry list of invitees. Which is when Nero had an idea.
He summoned convicts from the Roman jail, particularly the ones about to be hanged or imprisoned for life, and burnt them alive in the periphery of the garden. The fire ensured there was no absence of light, and the party went on without any difficulties.

Exactly 14 yrs ago happened the brutal caste atrocity at Khairlanji. A Dalit woman & her daughter were paraded naked, raped & killed.

Today, another Dalit teen dies because of similar atrocity. And her grieving family is humiliated instead of being treated with dignity.
#Hathras
In the Khairlanji case, the Bhandara court had ruled out the caste angle. The Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court said it isn't the rarest of rare case.

14 years later, people are explaining what caste atrocity means to journalists on twitter.
#Hathras
The only one that survived the Khairlanji massacre was Bhaiyyalal Bhotmange. His entire family was wiped out. He died of a heart attack in 2017, waiting for justice as this story points out

"Modi sarkar, Murdabad."

Farmers in different corners of Maharashtra are protesting the #FarmBills2020.

This, in Nandurbar.
Farmers are protesting the best thing that could've happened to them. Apparently, everybody knows more about farming than farmers themselves.

This, in Solapur.

In Nanded, farmers are symbolically burning the #FarmBills2020.

Always have mixed feelings when the people I write about get help from readers.

This week, a good samaritan reached out with groceries to135 families in two villages of Palghar that I had reported from.
While it is heartening to see the people you featured receive some relief, this isn't how things should be.

I reported from two villages and highlighted the issue of malnutrition across the district. There are 30 lakh people in Palghar.
This kept gnawing at me even during the migrant exodus. The workers that featured in our stories got some help.

It was a matter of chance that we spoke to X and not Y. This isn't fair.
