July29 - #InternationalTigerDay - to raise awareness about the dwindling number of Tigers & to encourage tiger conservation. It was created in 2010 at Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia.
What is this 'Tiger Summit'? Read 👇
In 2010, it came to light that d tiger numbers was an all time low. So the Tiger Range countries gathered at Russia and committed to an ambitious goal of Tx2 i.e to double the wild tigers population by 2022.
What are these Tiger Range Countries??
There are currently 13 tiger range countries- India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Russia, Cambodia, Thailand & Vietnam. India hosts the largest tiger population. (PC WWF)
Is there any other International forum related to Tigers? Yes
Global Tiger Forum (GTF established in 1994) is a partnership between Bhutan, India, Nepal along with WWF inorder to promote worldwide campaign to save the tiger, its prey & its habitat. Integrated Tiger Habitat Conservation Program-ITHCP is one of its project.
How about India?
Project Tiger started in 1973 with 9 Tiger Reserves. Now we have 51 Tiger reserves - latest addition is Srivilliputhur Meghamalai TR in TN. 70% of the world’s tigers are in India
NTCA was established in 2005 exclusively for Tiger conservation
How is their population estimated?
Apart from the regular wildlife census methods, M-STrIPES (Monitoring System for Tigers - Intensive Protection and Ecological Status) an app based monitoring system is also used to estimate tiger population. It was launched by NTCA in 2010.
How does it function?
Just like our fingerprints, the Tiger stripe pattern is unique to each individual. The stripe color varies from light brown to black. It is not symmetrical on both sides of the body - this is what is captured by M-STrIPES to identify individuals.
So how many tigers we have now?
Wild Tiger population in India shows an increasing trend..
2006 -1411 🐅
2014 - 2226 🐅
2018 - 2967 🐅
India prepares the tiger estimation report every 4 years.
MP has highest number of tigers -526 Karnataka - 524, Uttarakhand - 442.
Finally, why are Tigers important?
" Where tigers thrive, it is a sign that the ecosystem is healthy" is a saying.
As an “umbrella species”, Tiger conservation enables the entire ecosystem conservation - supports several other species, maintains the water regime, the whole forest is healthy and balanced...
They are "Keystone species" too - as an apex predators they keep the prey species under control thereby protects the vegetation. Hence protecting tigers means protecting all other animals, plants &the whole forest ecosytem
Finally, How many species of tiger we have?
India has only Royal Bengal tiger species. These are found primarily in India with smaller populations in Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, China & Myanmar. This is the most numerous of all tiger subspecies with around 3000 nunbers in the wild.
- 6 more subspecies which exist till date are Siberian, Royal Bengal, Sumatran, South-China, Indo-chinese and Malayan tigers. Indo Chinese tigers are already extinct in the wild.

This is a thread on #BlueFlag certification to the Beaches.
The Blueflag certification was given to 8 beaches in India by the international jury of IUCN, UNWTO, UNEP etc. International eco-label "Blue flag” is accorded by The Foundation of Environment Education, FEE Denmark.
‘BLUE FLAG” was accorded to
Shivrajpur (Dwarka-Gujarat),
Ghoghla (Diu),
Kasarkod and Padubidri (Karnataka),
Kappad (Kerala),
Rushikonda (AP),
Golden (Puri-Odisha)
Radhanagar (A&N Islands)
India is also the first country in Asia-Pacific region to have achieved this feat in just 2 years’ time.
Japan, South Korea and UAE are the only other Asian nations to have beaches with Blue Flag credit. There are about 50 nations with Blue flagged beaches.
#Elephant is our national heritage animal. They are represented as drawings, sculptures, paintings and in many other forms. They are closely related to our culture, art, religions & traditions. Have added some of my sketches themed on the unique features of Elephant. Add yours.
The matriarch culture found in the #elephants makes them even better than the most civilised human race.
The young ones are best cared by all the adults and sub adults in the #elephant family.
This World Snakes Day, try to know the popular myths about Snakes and the actual facts behind. All we need to know is, Snakes are crucial part of our ecosystem and we should conserve them. Read Thread!
Myth 1: Snakes Drink Milk
Just like any other animal, they drink water to keep them hydrated. When snakes are kept starved for days and offered milk, they do drink to keep them hydrated. They are cold-blooded reptiles. Forcing them to drink milk could sometimes kill them.
Myth 2- Snakes have Diamond in their head or throat
Just like other animals or us, they are made of cells & muscles. There is no such diamond or any other precious stone in their body. They cannot hypnotise anyone. Lots of snakes are getting killed for these reasons.
This thread is all about controlling #soilerosion in an Eco-way. Combined with water retention structures - it will also aid #Waterconservation. Erosion Control and water harvesting/storage are closely coupled wrt Watershed Management as well. Read! 👇
Most of us know there are different stages of soil erosion 1. Splash 2. Sheet erosion 3. Rill 4. Gully
Gullies create wastelands. So it's very important to control Soil erosion at the initial stage. There are several ways - Vegetative means and through engineering structures.
Usage of Coir GeoTextile to control Soil erosion - Uttrakhand Forest Department carried out this Eco-way treatment of gullies at 10,000 ft in the alpine meadows. They used coir knit sheets to spread over the banks/bunds of the gully.
Do you know what inspired the Yogis to come up with many asanas? It was nature, the early yogis were influenced by what was around them. Read - Thread on Yoga!
#Cow Pose aka Bitilasana & #Cat Pose aka Marjariasana. Usually these two are done together. It helps in spine flexibility. The breathing exercise attached with this helps in relaxation. This is common posture in which the cow stands and cat stretches.
