The #CaliforniaRecallElection starts in less than TWO WEEKS, on Monday, August 16. What is it, and why should you vote in it?

Let's go through it and hopefully answer your questions. 🧵 1/13 Governor Newsom strides tow...
Recall is a process to remove someone from elected office before their next regular election. It's meant for when one's very presence in office is an emergency that must be ended ASAP.

Republicans are trying to abuse recall to remove Gov. Newsom just because he's a Democrat. 2/
You may have heard for months now about signature-gathering for “the recall”. Five previous petitions didn't get enough signatures to trigger a recall election.

But the sixth attempt did (barely), so the recall election is happening. And it's happening THIS MONTH. 3/
Gov. Newsom is successful and popular, so why worry?

Because it's an odd election at an odd time of an odd year, so it's all going to come down to TURNOUT.

We need to show up to vote NO in the #CaliforniaRecallElection. Here's why: 4/
A #CaliforniaRecallElection has one ballot with two questions.

• Question 1 is whether to recall (remove) Newsom from office.
• Question 2 is who should replace him.

(Newsom is not listed as a candidate! Question 2 is challengers only!) 5/ Front side of the sample ba...Other side of the sample sa...
Question 1, the recall, is majority vote. More than 50% have to vote yes to recall Gov. Newsom.

Question 2, the replacement, is *plurality* vote. Whosoever gets the most votes wins—even if it isn't much!

There are 46 challengers. 6/13
The most recent polling shows the front-running challenger getting about 10% of the vote, just because they've heard his name before.

If the recall passes, he could be our next Governor with 10% of the vote.

We must show up to vote NO and defeat the recall. 7/
Gov. Newsom was elected with 62% of the vote. If Q1 passes, he could be replaced with someone who got only 10% of the vote.

This isn't democracy. A clear majority of Californians elected Newsom—but he's a Democrat, so Rs want to grab power from him.

So what can you do?

→ First, check your voter registration: voterstatus.sos.ca.gov
→ If you need to register/re-register/pre-register/update your registration, do that: registertovote.ca.gov

You have until Mon, Aug 30 to register, but you should do it NOW. 9/
If you're registered to vote now, you'll get a ballot in the mail on or around Mon, Aug 16.

That's less than two weeks from now!!!!!

Fill it out as soon as you get it. Don't wait. #AugustIsVotingMonth 10/ Two calendars, covering Aug...
Lastly, don't forget to cast your ballot.

You have until Tue, Sep 14 to drop it off at City Hall.

If you want to mail it, we recommend no later than Tue, Sep 7 so you don't have to worry about mail delays. The real deadlines are postmarked by Tue, Sep 14, arrival by Sep 17. 11/
So that's what you need to do:
- Check your registration.
- Register to vote if needed.
- Get your ballot in the mail Mon, Aug 16.
- Cast your ballot by Tue, Sep 14.

If we do these things, we keep Gov. Newsom for the rest of his term, leading California through the pandemic.

If we don't turn out, the recall could succeed, and a Republican could replace him with as little as 10% of the vote.

Vote NO and #StopTheRecall. Thank you. 13/13 Photo of the ballot asking ...

1. We used the wrong version of the two-calendars image upthread. This one should be easier to read on some devices. Sorry!

What's this all about anyway? We've been working to bring awareness to the deeply-rooted problems w/ police accountability and racist policing in San Francisco, and fix them through our local legislature and in our budget! This hearing is crucial to that effort. #SFBudgetAppsCom

In the last two years, we’ve learned that #resistance means getting involved at all levels of government. Our members have doorknocked with @swingleft, lobbied for police demilitarization in Sacramento, met often with Congressional staff and rallied for #FamiliesBelongTogether 1/
Our members are working at the state level to craft new gun control legislation and organizing at the City level for a #publicbank. We continue to pressure @SpeakerPelosi and @SenFeinstein to sign onto the #GreenNewDeal. We want #Medicare4All and we won’t accept a racist wall. 2/
In the last two years, we’ve organized countless phone banks, text banks and postcard campaigns. We’ve learned about burnout. We also learned how crucial it is to amplify the voices of organizations that have been around and in the trenches far longer than we. 3/
