The bipartisan #infrastructure bill (#BIB) just passed the Senate. It would create jobs & take significant, but inadequate, #climateaction. Here are a few major investments–and what must be added in budget reconciliation to meet the scale of the #climatecrisis. [Thread]
Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure: at least $5 billion to create the first-ever national investment in EV charging infrastructure to create thousands of jobs and accelerate the transition to EVs.
Electric School Buses: $2.5 billion to replace diesel-powered school buses w/ electric pollution-free buses
*Another $2.5 billion for “clean” buses, which could be used for polluting “alternative fuel” buses (CNG, propane)(needs fix before final passage) dataforprogress.org/blog/2021/7/23…
Environmental Remediation: $16 billion to reclaim abandoned mine land and cap orphaned gas wells. WRI analysis finds remediating fossil land and wells can create thousands of jobs in rural communities: wri.org/insights/clima…
Carbon Removal: Starts to address the reforestation backlog on federal lands with the REPLANT Act and funds innovation in carbon removal through investments in carbon capture demonstrations and a direct air capture prize competition.
Climate Resilience: $11.6 billion for Army Corp of Engineers projects, including ecosystem restoration and flood control, more than $3 billion for wildfire risk reduction, and $5 billion to reduce extreme weather impacts on the grid.
More Needed: The #BIB includes many critical investments, but it’s far from enough to tackle the #climatecrisis. The #IPCCreport offers an alarming picture of our future if we don’t take bold #climateaction now. Here’s what Congress needs to add in reconciliation:
Clean Power: A Clean Energy Payments Program and tax credits for wind, solar, and electricity storage are essential to cut powerplant emissions 80% by 2030. And clean electricity is the key to cleaning up transport and buildings via electrification. volts.wtf/p/crunch-time-…
Electric Buses: Polluting diesel buses are harming our children & communities. @POTUS’s #AmericanJobsPlan called for electrifying all transit buses & at least 20% of all school buses. The #BIB includes only a fraction of what’s needed. wri.org/insights/where…
Electric Vehicle Incentives: All new cars need to be pollution-free by 2035 to tackle transportation emissions – the top source of #GHG emissions in US. Providing consumer rebates & investing more in charging infrastructure will accelerate the transition. wri.org/insights/why-s…
Building Upgrades: @POTUS’s #AmericanJobsPlan included $370 billion – and the #BIB is a far cry from that in terms of scale and ambition. Such investments are critical to lower the energy consumption of schools, hospitals, and housing, and decarbonizing heating.
Modernize the Grid: The nation’s aging transmission and distribution system needs a significant overhaul to handle extreme weather events, cyberattacks and integrate a growing share of utility-scale clean energy resources. More: wri.org/insights/us-in…
Industries of the Future: Add the investments outlined in the #AmericanJobsPlan that include carbon capture demonstrations on steel, cement and chemical plants, expand the 45Q carbon sequestration credit & research in emerging technologies
Last Chance: The reconciliation package is the best opportunity to advance #climateaction this decade, and the #IPCCreport tells us this decade is our last chance to avert climate catastrophe. For the sake of our future, Congress must deliver. No excuses. wri.org/news/statement…

Today @POTUS unveiled the #AmericanJobsPlan that includes transformative investments in clean energy that could kickstart the economy, create millions of good jobs and tackle the #climatecrisis head on. Here are a few key measures in the proposal [THREAD]
Electric Vehicles: $174 billion to compete in the global #EV market and support American workers to make batteries and EVs, electrify federal fleet, replace 50,000 diesel transit vehicles & work w/ state/local governments to build national network of 500,000 EV chargers by 2030.
Electric School Buses: Electrify at least 20% of US school bus fleet through new Clean Buses for Kids Program at @EPA and set the country on a path to 100% clean buses. Our analysis shows electric buses can have major health, cost-savings & jobs benefits. wri.org/publication/ma…

On “Climate Day”, President Biden is making good on his commitment to tackle climate change by signing a suite of executive orders directing all agencies of the federal government to prioritize #climateaction at home and abroad.
Here are the major actions [Thread]
International Leadership. Biden directs the U.S. to begin the process of developing the country’s emission reduction target (NDC), a climate finance plan and hosting the international climate summit on April 22 to push major emitters to ramp up climate ambition.
