It is the only legitimate entity.

Even if the constitution were relevant to the discussion in some manner wrt to a right for Tigrayan people to secede by referendum, by mounting an on going 10 month (and arguably a 3 year dirty war) the TPLF forfeited all their rights.
Nonetheless everyone of good faith wishes Jeffrey Feltman luck in securing peace.
Jeffrey Feltman will fail if he continues to seek a negotiated settlement based on the constitution. Any Washington observers who think otherwise are completely delusional.

This war is at the threshold of resuming in full, catastrophically, and Washington is willfully blind.
A sharp change in US policy might be able to delay the conflict long enough to enable Feltman to mediate in some way, but it would need to be public and unequivocal.

And then a negotiated peaceful settlement involving excile of TPLF leadership could at least be discussed.
One means to achieve this might be for the US to threaten to provide security assistance to Ethiopia to capture TPLF leadership and send them to trial, unless they agree to an immediate ceasefire without pre-conditions.
But if Feltman is expected to work the miracle of magically erasing 27 years of US support for TPLF’s crimes with bluster and threats, then Washington is clearly both not paying attention and completely clueless.
It seems plausible today’s French cancellation of military assistance to Ethiopia was also a @StateDept African Bureau daft idea. And now it’s just another broken arrow in Feltman’s mission quiver.
US crack-handed diplomacy has led to a place where most Ethiopians now consider the US as just another arm of the TPLF.

The country is mobilizing for what many consider to be a re-run of the battle of Ad-wa. An existential threat to its existence.
I have just come out of a six hour VOA journalist hosted @twitterspaces forum with a group of 1000 odd divided polarized Ethiopians, some on the Tigray side, some on the GOE side, many in the US diaspora.
The level of pain, fear, trauma and anger on both sides is colossal. Both groups have been on the frontlines of a TPLF engineered information war about the real war in Tigray which has now resulted in over 2 million IDPs.
These people represent two populations. On one side a Tigrayan diaspora twitter community, 5.2 million Tigrayans.

On the other side a mix of diaspora and Ethiopians and Eritreans representing all of Ethiopia 115 million people, who want 1. Peace & 2. To be rid of the TPLF.
A speaker at the close summed up the mood after 100s of speakers on both sides had had their say.

“Continued denial of each other’s pain is what got us here.” - @eyerueth.
There is no threat of Genocide in Ethiopia beyond that created by TPLF.

There is no war in Ethiopia between ethnicities, Tigrayans are Ethiopians, and like all of the peoples of Ethiopia the victims of the TPLF.
The TPLF is the radioactive by product of the US War on Terror. A safe but brutal and ruthless pair of hands who kept the Horn of Africa out of the hands of terror and shipping lanes open.
The TPLF is now completely redundant in this role. Their unwillingness to accept their fall from power, at the hands of a popular youth lead peaceful revolution, the Qeroo, has resulted in a dirty war since a June 2018.

This piece from AlMariam just made my day :) almariam.com/2021/08/14/tpl…
The comparison today between #Ethiopia and Afghanistan could not be more stark.

There is a lesson in this terrible being for the 50 year long period of US adventures in #Afghanistan.

AlMariam expresses this beautifully in these three passages. ImageImageImage
Someone told me that Feltman’s visit is just for show, a fool’s errand, “he just has to show up, they said. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

A great deal of harm followed in the weeks immediately following this 29th of June HOR committee hearing.

Why is @AsstSecStateAF Robert F. Godec in this hot seat? Who appointed him on inauguration day 2021? Why?
Ambassador Godec repeatedly says in the hearing that the solution is for all parties to honour the ceasefire - which was at that time 1 day old, but there is no evidence any effort was applied to achieving that objective over the following weeks.
Some objectives mentioned in the hearing were acheived, e.g. an open UNSC meeting on the conflict. But why did it take till July 30th for @StateDeptSpox to call for a ceasefire with no preconditions.

A deeper look at this "Conflict in Ethiopia" hearing where @AsstSecStateAF Robert F. Godec was the primary witness. Thread....
In the meeting Godec was accompanied by @USAID offical Sarah F Charles, Assistant to the Administrator of USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance Bio: usaid.gov/who-we-are/org… Image
Acting Assistant Sec. Godec's testimony with a ref. to the previous day's "Unilateral Ceasefire". Absent this ceasefire it seems possible that the House Resolution would have passed, bolstering legitimacy of the Biden Admin's hostile approach towards the Govt. of Ethiopia.

TPLF head Debretsion Gebremichael appears decidedly unwilling to seek a peaceful solution to this conflict. Here he is speaking to TMH (Tigray Media House) on August 7th. Immediately following the visit of @PowerUSAID to the region.

Background thread on @AsstSecStateAF Ambassador Robert F. Godec, the U.S.'s acting chief Africa Policy decision maker in the @StateDept.

Conclusion: A very spooky character who has probably worked closely in the recent past with TPLF spy chief Getachew Assefa.
On the day after the Govt. of Ethiopia's Unilateral Ceasefire (June 28th) @AsstSecStateAF Godec was the main witness in a three hour hearing on Capitol Hill Washington D.C. looking at the Tigray crisis.

Direct link to start of his testimony.
@AsstSecStateAF The committee is deliberating on a draft bi-partisan resolution on the Tigray conflict, H.Res.445 proposed by Dem. @RepKarenBass and supported by NJ Rep Chris Smith. The resolution has stalled in the committee.

Ambassador Robert Godec, Acting Assitant Secretary of the Bureau of African Affairs is the lead U.S. Govt. official responsible for U.S. policy reponses to this crisis.

Here is his biography - state.gov/biographies/ro…
He is a long serving career diplomat but has had two assignments which point to deeper involvement in the wider U.S. security apparatus.

Three aspects of his biography jump out for me as being relevant to our understanding of U.S. engagement on this crisis.
1/ His last posting before returning to D.C. "He was U.S. Ambassador to Kenya from January 2013 to February 2019.  Ambassador Godec was assigned as the Chargé d’Affaires at U.S. Embassy Nairobi, Kenya in August 2012."
