To help you understand why refusing insurance coverage for unvaccinated people isn’t a solution.
It would devastate the healthcare system.
Continue reading to understand why. /1
EMTALA laws require hospitals to treat EMC (emergency medical conditions). That care must be continued until EMC has resolved or stabilized enough for the pt to take care of themselves at home. Hospitals cannot absorb that cost. /2
Forcing people to pay higher premiums would only result in them being unable to afford insurance, so they just wouldn’t get it. The result would be the same: hospitals could not absorb the costs. The healthcare system would fall apart. /3
“Because the ACA envisioned low-income people receiving coverage through Medicaid, it does not provide financial assistance to people below poverty for other coverage.” /4
States that failed to expand Medicaid have had to close the doors to many rural hospitals because the working poor often cannot afford insurance from the ACA exchange, so they have NO coverage. Hospitals had to absorb the costs & could not. /5
Large numbers of unvaccinated Covid patients who lack coverage would not even be sustainable for hospitals in states with expanded Medicaid. /6
We as a society cannot afford for our healthcare system to collapse. /7
I understand the anger & outrage from the vaccinated over those who remain unvaccinated. I feel it myself. Yet, I continue to treat these patients because even if they don’t value their own lives, I do. We have the power to change the ending to this story. /8
So please, if you know anyone who isn’t vaccinated, talk to them. People are hearing disinformation horror stories about the vaccines. Arm yourself with facts. Don’t talk down to them or judge them. Help them to understand. /9
We will sink together or float together since every person is potentially a Petri dish waiting to help SARS-CoV2 evolve into another more deadly variant that can evade both natural & vaccine induced immunity. Be that life preserver that helps everyone float. /End
Think the vaccine will end our #COVID19 problems soon?
Think again.
Pfizer will produce 50 million doses this year. 1/2 of those may go to the US. Each person needs 2 doses, so 12.5 million of us get vaccinated with Pfizer vaccine . /1
While we get excited about a vaccine, #COVID19 cases rise. We have had one million cases documented over the past week, our rate of rise is higher than it even was in the summer, we have hospitalizations going up 25% week over week.” /3
1st, I’m a progressive.
But come on progressives, are “Medicare For All,” “The Green New Deal,” or “Ending Citizen’s United” the hills you want to die on? If you do, there will be no living to fight another day. #VoteBlueToSaveAmerica #Blue2020 #BidenHarris @DemCast
We need to defeat tRump if we are going to have a chance to live to fight another day. We cannot afford the luxury of being purists, arguing about whether or not the party will or won’t move completely away from fossil fuels or will or won’t embrace Medicare for all.
If we hold out for those demands we will find ourselves living in a dictatorship with zero freedoms. We can fight for the other things later. If we don’t take a stand against tRump right now, there won’t be anything left to save. #TrumpHoaxedAmerica
