2/ What we look for (1/2):
📍Attitude is more important than test scores!
📍We want to recruit good people who are going to bring a positive attitude and work to enhance our patients' care, engage in learning, and support their colleagues.
3/ What we look for (2/2):
...In return, we'll treat you with respect and help you become the best neurologist you can be!
4/ 🧠Fun Facts (1/3): 1. Madison's location on an isthmus gives it a unique and fun layout--the lakes are beautiful! 2. Our Dane County Farmers Market is the largest in the country
5/ 🧠Fun Facts (2/3): 3. Warfarin was developed here (WARF stands for Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation) 4. Former department chair Dr. Frank Forster was one of the "Four Horsemen" who founded the American Academy of Neurology
6/ 🧠Fun Facts (2/3): 5. Dr. Forster treated President Eisenhower for a stroke & evaluated Jack Ruby, who falsely said epilepsy caused him to assassinate Lee Harvey Oswald (JFK’s assassin) 6. We have a reflex hammer owned by Dr. Babinski, passed down through multiple dept chairs
6/ #Wellness (1/2): We're a close-knit program, with strong relationships between faculty and even junior residents. Juniors have early support from seniors, but mostly staff cases directly with faculty and thereby learn quickly how to care for neurological patients.
7/ #Wellness (2/2): Each resident is assigned a faculty mentor and the program director mentors everyone! Most residents choose additional mentor(s) later on as their career interests develop.
8/ 💖Favorite aspects of the program (1/2): We're a close-knit community. Our adult, peds, and VA hospitals are all interconnected, as is our administrative office. No driving around town or the region.
9/ 💖Favorite aspects of the program (2/2): The people here are friendly. The ancillary support is superb--there are times when you order a lab on rounds and phlebotomy is there before you leave the room!
10/ More about our program: We offer clinical neurophysiology fellowships (flexible split of EEG and EMG) and also epilepsy and stroke. Our graduates do very well with fellowship placements.
11/ #MedStudent advice: Don't worry too much about neurology, per se. Work on becoming the best well-rounded student doctor you can be; we'll teach you neurology! Focus on efficiency--how to present cases concisely and how to organize your day productively.
2/ 📍What we look for (1/2):
📍We conduct a holistic review to find candidates with inherent curiosity for learning and a passion to serve neurological patients. As our chair Dr. Okun says - “the patient is the sun and we orbit around them”.
2/ 📍What we look for (2/2):
A team-focused attitude is also key, as we have a great group of residents and faculty who all support one another.
2/ What we look for: (1/2)
📍 We look for applicants from diverse backgrounds that are passionate, motivated, and kind-hearted. One of our goals is to mold all of our residents into leaders in the field.
2/ What we look for: (2/3)
📍In addition, we take great pride in the fact that our residents work with an underserved population. Our residency stresses the importance of understanding our patients, their circumstances…
2/ What we look for (1/2):
📍Our residents thrive because they love spending time with each other and our faculty, are great team players, and enjoy a good work life balance.
2/ What we look for (2/2):
📍If you are passionate about neurology, hardworking, and envision yourself contributing to the field, either locally in Houston, nationally, or globally, consider training with us!
