Since 9/11, the number of UK/US newspaper articles about terrorism increased exponentially - despite attacks in Europe & North America being much more common during the 1970/80s & typically carried out by left/right-wing nationalists.
Sheffield University's @JaredAhmad1 makes a powerful & persuasive argument:
'Aside from the drama and newsworthiness of the 9/11 attacks, a major reason why terrorism dominated headlines was because politicians and other “elite” figures began talking about terrorism. A lot.'
'Studies reveal how, in the days, weeks and months after 9/11, politicians and security sources (often anonymous and unnamed) dominated the news of the terror threat during this period and helped encourage an atmosphere of patriotic fervour.'
'Perhaps the most damaging legacy of 9/11, however, has been the homogenisation and Islamisation of the terror threat. This has resulted in the conflation of Islam and Muslims with terrorism in much news coverage.'
'In the UK, news audiences saw a dramatic increase in news about Islam & Muslims in the years after the 9/11 attacks. While not always negative, media reports indicate a thematic focus on terrorism, violent extremism & the cultural difference of Muslims.'
'In America, scholars have shown how terrorist attacks involving Muslim perpetrators tend to receive around 375% more attention than when the culprit is a non-Muslim.'
'Despite a fascination with Islamic terrorism, only 2.6% of attacks & 0.51% of deaths by terrorism occur in western nations. The vast majority of such attacks tend to be motivated by ethno-nationalist causes, rather than Islamist.'
'The 9/11 attacks & the “war on terror”, ensured terrorism is a newsworthy topic. Groups with a vested interest in exaggerating terror threat levels (politicians & security services) are the main voices framing news, & for them, only one type of “terrorism” is deemed important.'
Recent (imho ignorant, divisive & reactionary) comments by Tony Blair about the 'existential threat' posed by what he refers to as “Islamism” to western nations 'shows that reductive rhetoric about “good” & “bad” Muslims still captures the attention of news media.'
News media should report terrorist events in ways that do not sensationalise or overstate terrorist violence.
We must challenge the simplistic way politicians tend to frame the issue, contextualise events as they happen, & combat the stereotypes that demarcate “us” from “them”.

Libertarian John Malone is on the board of directors for the grotesquely libertarian free-market Cato Institute, founded by the Koch Foundation in 1974.
And Malone donated US$250,000 to Donald Trump's inauguration in 2017. He's generous like that. 🧐
Do the #USA🇺🇸 & #UK🇬🇧 have a disproportionately large proportion of idiots?
Or do they have Governments & news media influenced by rich free-market fundamentalists who want to deregulate everything, make people live & work in unsafe environments, & who value profit over lives?
Hungary, Brazil, the USA & UK are among the top 25 worst-performing countries on earth for COVID deaths/million of population.
Of these countries, the UK & USA have *BY FAR* the highest number of cases over the last 7 days - more than twice as many as the next highest, Brazil.
And just to be clear:
Brazil 🇧🇷 (population 211 million) - 99,846 cases last 7 days.
UK 🇬🇧 (population 68 million) - 206,462 cases last 7 days.
USA 🇺🇸 (population 333 million) - 932,988 cases last 7 days.
Out of these countries, the UK is the worst performing.
In 2013, at the annual Margaret Thatcher Lecture, Boris Johnson said inequality is essential to fostering "the spirit of envy" & hailed greed as a "valuable spur to economic activity".
The damaged, lying, opportunistic hypocrite also demonised Romanians.
Johnson warned that the accession of Romania to the EU meant that London could do nothing to stop the "entire population of Transylvania" from "pitching their tents in Marble Arch".
Romania's foreign minister expressed his outrage at "xenophobic, populist" politicians in the UK.
The deregulatory free-market ideology that he & his catastrophic & cruel Government subscribe to seem to relish deepening inequality, & in his speech he warned that the growing competition Britain faced in a globalised economy meant that inequality would deepen.
Divisive liar & Tory MP PHILIP DAVIES has wrongly claimed that asylum seekers crossing the channel by boat "are illegal immigrants, not asylum seekers".
Why are politicians allowed to lie to voters?
And why are certain newspapers allowed to amplify their blatant lies?
Refugees can legitimately make a claim for asylum in the UK after passing through “safe” countries. Philip Davies cannot know whether they'd be recognised as refugees as this is determined by UK immigration officials reviewing their asylum applications.
The Express knows Philip Davies' claim that asylum seekers crossing the channel by boat "are illegal immigrants, not asylum seekers" is a blatant lie, & they get away with amplifying obvious lies by claiming 'it's marked 'comment' & is just an opinion'.🤬
