“It was so invasive it covered everyday life … undercover informants or undercover officers, their job was to live the life of a fake Muslim inside these communities,” said Ahmed Mohamed, of the New York chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY).
“Think about what you do in your daily life and someone undercover doing it with you … it's very hard, not only did it create a lot of distrust between the community and law enforcement, but also among the community itself, you're not crazy or unreasonable to think
‘I don't know that person– I wonder if he's undercover or an informant,” Mohamed said.
“When you have a government saying that this particular racial, religious group is suspect, it interferes with their religious practice. I have known individuals who don't want to look Muslim in public due to fear of unwarranted attention,” Mohamed said.
“There's a lot of community fear and mistrust, it chills free speech, you see a lot of individuals who don't want to go to protests, who don't want to be engaged in politics don't want to be involved in places that may be controversial,
Public controversy over the incident flared Wednesday after Bowe appeared at a news conference with leaders and staff attorney Amy Doukoure with the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Michigan Chapter.
Doukoure and CAIR-MI are representing Bowe in her effort to collect a financial settlement.
The attorney said Friday no lawsuit has been filed at this point, but she and CAIR-MI have filed a “notice of claim,” which asks for a $250,000 settlement for Bowe and a change
Many refugees will come with little to nothing. So, CAIR, an organization that provides resources to the local Muslim community, is gathering items for a welcome kit with necessities and a hot meal.

McClellan plans to keep filling up the room in her house with donations for about two more weeks, then give everything to CAIR Oklahoma on October 1st.
