1/10 Professionals, parents and/or Autistics: my course 'The inside of Autism' kicks off on Nov 4th 7pm (BST). Its focused on reframing the #Autism narrative from an Autistic perspective, based on current research, introducing new concepts & giving new tools
2/ I cover:
The history of Autism & the role of research, Myths, What Autism actually is (and what it isn't), Co-occurring conditions, Gender, Sex & Minority groups inc the role of racism and sexism, The Neurodiversity paradigm, The sensory system, stimming & sensory invalidation
3/ Overwhelm, 'Behaviour', Understanding Autistic communication, Anxiety & why it's so prevalent,The role of stigma and marginalisation & their impact on Identity, Autistic Masking, Autistic Burnout and poor mental health, Enablement & self-advocacy; Autistic culture;
And trauma
4/ This course is not easy, it is designed to challenge your thinking and, if you are a professional, make you sit uncomfortably, but without judgement.
It is a big mirror held against what you thought you knew.
5/ All this happens over 6 sessions (with a 7th for free) If you come to live sessions that's at least 14 hours of training, Q&A and live discussion (last round lasted 22 hours in total)
I've had people come back repeatedly for the content AND the community that's formed.
6/ We've had Autistic people, parents, family members, SLTs, OTs, Psychologists, Teachers, Counsellors, Service Providers and many more, all learning together and all centred on validating Autistic experiences.
7/ It's available to anyone, anywhere. If you can't make the live deliveries, you get access to recordings of the training and still get 7 hours of support for £40 (approx $55US, $71CA, $76AU, €47)
8/ You also get a 100 page workbook and lots of extra supportive resources such as signposting, information and research and the opportunity to be in a rich, mixed online learning environment where Autistic voices are centred.
9/ This is not like any #Autism training you have been on before. Its not even 'autism' training. It's focused on Autistic *people*, unlearning, replacing confirmation bias, opening new doors and giving you new tools and a different lens to look through
10/10 If you are interested in coming, please visit this link where you will find more information about the specific content and the link to join us:
1/ "... Simon Baron-Cohen... has previously been closely associated with “debunked” theories that have led to “inaccurate & damaging stereotypes” about autistic people, such as their lack of empathy...
He strongly disputes these claims about his work."
2/ The utter audacity he has to completely rewrite history, 'forget' the multiple studies, talks, interviews & books on ToM & extreme male brain.
Its his entire back catalogue.
The extremity of self-delusion & /or lying is mindboggling.
3/The awful, dehumanising and monstrous things SBC has written over the years. Work embedded in the minds and framework of services & the legacy of so many left unrecognised and unsupported.
Honestly and with all due respect, if you think my work is amazing, then i've failed to teach you anything. This is one of the most dehumanising, loaded and negative questionnaires i've read in ages.
When one of the first questions you ask is on 'severity' (which is not a clinical label nor has ANY clinical value), you've already set the tone because what follows is just disgusting
Here we are establishing the negativity in our relationships with our children, because they aren't who we wanted them to be. How dare they.
1. Oh was yesterday #AutismAwarenessDay? Dang. I missed it. Instead I stayed off of social Media and spent a lovely day with my #ActuallyAutistic family not waving jigsaw pieces around, turning blue or spreading misinformation around that makes money for charities.
2. Later on I did a 3hr workshop on #AutisticMasking to 400 lovely Danish people with @DrAmyPearson. I missed #AutismAwarenessDay yet still somehow managed to pass on a shitload of useful & practical #Autism knowledge to a shitload of people
3. Its strangely like there's no need to have #AutismAwarenessDay, #AutismAwarenessWeek, or #AutismAwarenessMonth because for many Autistic people every day is, week and month of the year where we put out immensities of useful & productive #Autism information in various forms.
Dehumanising Autistics is nothing new, it's embedded in societal consciousness going back decades to those like Lovaas who felt Autistic people were empty shells waiting to be filled with 'normalcy'. That's perpetuated with the burden narrative and neuronormative standards.
