ACTION ALERT: Urge universities & their departments to condemn open bigotry against #Hindus by @dghconference. Thread provides evidence of #Hinduphobia + hate speech against #Hinduism. We ask the community & our allies to take action now! Visit cohna.org/dismantlehindu… 1/n
D1 Sess.3, Dr. Gajendran Ayyathurai of @uniGoettingen dangerously and falsely declared that Hinduism inspired Nazism, opening Hindus up for hatred, gaslighting and harassment. 2/n
D1 Sess.3, Dr. Ayyathurai called Hindus "violent malignant Brahmins." Targeted 5 Hindu last names as those with a history of extreme violence, quoting that they are "...violent advocates of...malignant Brahmanism," thus singling out groups + encouraging violence, bullying. 3/n
Note, on Sept. 10th, Prof. Audrey Truschke openly endorsed Dr. Ayyathurai's words and commended him for "speaking the truth," thus amplifying the hate and #Hinduphobia even further. 4/n
D2 Sess.1, P. Sivakami declared that Hinduism is a "danger to independence, equality and brotherhood" and against democratic values. This directly contributes to existing corpus of xenophobia directed at Hindus, conveying that we are "incompatible with democracy." 5/n
Several speakers at @dghconference openly stated that Hinduism and “Hindutva” are one and the same and essentially called for dismantling of Hinduism. Some examples follow.👇🏾 6/n
D1 Sess.3, Dr. Meena Dhanda, of @wlv_uni clearly stated that Hinduism & “Hindutva” are inextricably linked. She disparaged some of the most iconic Hindu leaders such as Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo and Mahatma Gandhi and essentially declared them as “Hindutva ideologues.” 7/n
To quote Dr. Dhanda: "I take Hindutva as political Hinduism, not a distortion of some inherently benign religion, but a historical expression of it, with continuities in the works of Dayananda Saraswati, Vivekananda, Aurobindo and Savarkar,...even Gandhi…" 8/n
D3 Sess.2, Dr. Shana Sippy of @CarletonCollege and of @auntylectuals openly called for dismantling Hinduism by declaring “...there is no Hindutva without Hinduism...Hindutva is inextricably linked to and is a form of Hinduism... 9/n
...and we do not think there is any way to understand Hindutva if you disaggregate it from [Hinduism]...and there is absolutely no way to dismantle it...if you are going to...ignore the Hinduism of it.” 10/n
D2 Sess.1, Dr. Akanksha Mehta of @GoldsmithsUoL , declared that “...without hesitation, that Hindutva is indeed inseparable from Hinduism, and... 11/n
...arguments of Hindutva is not Hinduism are deeply dangerous, Brahminical and laced with erasure and violence. They will not take us to the future we aspire…” 12/n
D3 Sess. 2, Dr. Balmurli Natrajan of @wpunj_edu stated that “I did not at least hear anyone, definitely myself, deny the fact that Hinduism is deeply imbricated with Hindutva...nobody on this panel has been denying it...” 13/n
These are just a few examples of the vitriol that was spewed by @dghconference & by the organizers. Clearly illustrate an overt agenda to dismantle Hinduism NOT Hindutva as the organizers & the academics who supported them originally alleged. dismantlinghindutva.com/academics-in-s… 14/n
The organizers, speakers and their academic supporters used their privileged positions to falsify information about Hinduism and Hindus, failed to exercise appropriate restraint and openly violated the ethical spirit of academic integrity and robust dialogue. 15/n
In doing so, they have endangered practicing Hindus on college campuses across the United States, Canada, and the world. 16/n
The universities have a moral obligation to vehemently denounce such bigotry, protect the civil rights of their Hindu students and faculty members and ensure that they feel safe and included on campus. 17/n
They must be held accountable for providing institutional support to a conference that targeted and called for a dismantling of minority faith in America. 18/n
Finally, our downloadable infographic lays out the above information to share with university administrators, lawmakers and the general public, along with a call to action for students, parents, alumni and community members. cohna.org/wp-content/upl…

BREAKING: A diverse group of 150 American and Canadian organizations write to universities expressing concerns regarding @dghconference, urging them to disavow such a Hinduphobic conference. 1/n cohna.org/org-letter-dgh…
The signatories stated: "we cannot help but feel intensely hurt when universities officially endorse those who have a history of bigotry against the same texts and religious traditions." 2/n
Letter’s signatories include a mix of orgs - from some of the largest Hindu temples & national associations, to interfaith allies, local cultural groups - and represent hundreds of thousands of mainstream Hindus, who live, study & work in communities across the two countries. 3/n

THREAD: Action alert - urge your local and federal lawmakers to call the universities sponsoring the "Dismantling Global Hindutva" Conf. "Academic freedom" cannot be a licensed for bigotry and hate. Here's why 1/n👇🏾cohna.org/us-lawmakers-d…
The Hindu American community has been working hard to engage with various universities and impress upon them the bigoted nature of this conference. However, we also need to engage our lawmakers and elected officials. 2/n
On the 20th Anniv of the #September11 and the biggest attack on American soil, the conf organizers are attempting to deflect attention from real terror and radicalism and are instead dangerously conflating Hindu organizations with Al Qaeda, Taliban and other terrorists. 3/n

THREAD: Does @UCBerkeley supports #AcademicHinduphobia and #bigotry advanced by @SugataRay1 and @ISASatBerkeley. "Research-based scholarly discussions"? A great example of intellectual dishonesty! Let's see 1/n
As we showed in our letter, the speakers and conference resources have a history of advancing bigotry and #Hinduphobia, disparaging Hindu deities and supporting violent political movements. 2/n cohna.org/dismantlehindu…
One of the keynote speakers has called Shri Rama a "di**head" while another has created a short film that false projects the Ramayana as a racist epic that endorses casteism based on colonial theories. "Scholarly discussions"? 3/n

THREAD - ACTION ALERT: #DismantleHinduphobia. Urge universities to dissociate themselves from the "Dismantling Global Hindutva" conference and not support bigotry against Hindus. Here's why.👇🏾1/n cohna.org/dismantlehindu…
As Hindus, we welcome any open exchange of ideas and the freedom of academics to pursue scholarly inquiry without restraint. However, this conference falsely paints Hindus as purveyors of extremism, actively denies the genocide of Hindu people, and most troublingly...2/n
...labels those who disagree as "Hindutva," which the conference organizers define as Hindu extremism. 3/n

THREAD: Yesterday, @CarnegieEndow, @MilanV released their survey on Indian Americans. As a Hindu American advocacy group, we ask for clarity on a few important points.👇🏾 1/n
First off, the survey contains important on the 4 Million strong Indian American community, including everyday social realities, religious practices, attitudes towards civic and political engagement, social networks, etc. However... 2/n
In an unfortunate display of how colonial categories like “caste” continue to haunt long after the colonizers have departed, the survey attempts to query respondents -but only those self identifying as Hindu-on their “caste”. This defies logic...3/n

THREAD: What do Audrey Truschke and @AnnCoulter have in common? Hatred for Hindus and #Hinduphobia...and randomness on "caste." And, how do you package Hinduphobia, anti-Asian hatred and anti-immigrant hatred in one tweet? See pic below, followed by our response.👇🏾 1/n
Ms. Khilanani’s remarks are outrageous, but not derived from Hindu philosophy or linked to ANY religion. So why drag in her faith & reference “caste” - that favorite millstone hung around a Hindu American’s neck, no matter which side of the ideological aisle they may be on? 2/n
Firstly, @AnnCoulter is simply ignorant. Ms. Khilanani is NOT an immigrant but born/raised in US. But, she is brown, so that makes her a perpetual "immigrant" +unwelcome. It even makes her unrelated religious background a target. This attitude is un-American & breeds hatred. 3/n
