The 10 Rules of Leadership:

Your nightmare boss breaks all of these.

THREAD//
1. Be Grateful

Expressing gratitude will not only help your team, but help your personal health.

- Reduces stress
- Increases resilience
- Improves relationships

Plus, Nobody wants a boss who complains about everything.
Leadership Tip:

Remember, people like different forms of gratitude.

For example, some will want praise in public, and others will prefer private recognition.

Learn how to connect with each individual on your team and make an impact.
2. Start With Why

People want to know they are part of something bigger than themselves.

- Inspiration to overcome obstacles.
- Motivates team to execute the WHAT
- Connects small actions to the big picture

"People don't buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it." @simonsinek
"When most organizations or people think, act or communicate, they do so from the outside in, from WHAT to WHY...We say WHAT we do, we sometimes say HOW we do it, but we rarely say WHY we do WHAT we do." - @simonsinek
3. Know Yourself

The most powerful awareness is self-awareness.

- Know your strengths
- Understand your triggers
- Manage your opportunities
- Feel your emotions physically

Lack of self-awareness leads to distrust and repeated mistakes.
“To know yourself, you must sacrifice the illusion that you already do.” — Vironika Tugaleva
4. Live Your Values

Writing down your values will help you accomplish more fulfilling work.

- Make better decisions
- Give your work purpose
- Increase your sense of self-awareness

Without defined values, you risk being seen as unauthentic.
Leadership Tip:

Make your values actionable.

Start by focusing on what is most important to you, and then write down how you will bring these values to action each day.
5. Embrace Feedback

It's impossible to make the right changes without listening to your team.

- Quicker improvement
- Better relationships
- Erase Blind Spots

Embracing feedback from your team is the best way to show them you value them and want to become a better leader.
Leadership Tip:

Getting feedback at work is a great way to gain self-awareness, as long as you listen and avoid being defensive.

I've had success with this question, "When people have complaints about me, what do they say?"

Don't be a know it all.

Be a learn it all.
6. Empower Your Team

Creating a leadership culture means empowering the people on your team to make decisions.

- Develops confidence
- Teaches problem-solving skills
- Allows team members to grow business
- Encourages team to expand their skillset
Leadership Tip:

A culture of empowerment will be tested when mistakes happen.

Very few mistakes can not be quickly fixed.

Use these moments as an opportunity to develop and teach, starting with understanding how the mistake happened.
7. Understand Your Emotions

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is responsible for 80% of our success in the workplace.

- Reduced attrition
- Stronger teamwork
- Improved job satisfaction
- More compassion and empathy for customers

Include EQ training with employee onboarding.
Leadership Tip:

Be aware of your ripple effects.

When you walk into a room, notice how the energy shifts.

Taking a moment to be aware of our impact on the people around us can provide valuable insights into our emotional state.
8. Do what you say you will

Trust is impossible without follow-through.

- A sign of competence
- Shows you take your job seriously
- Demonstrates commitment to your team

We are all human and have limitations.

Be sure you are ready to commit before you decide to commit.
Leadership Tip:

When you commit to something, write it down. Our brains are terrible at storing data.

Use a notebook, app, calendar, or whatever, but have a system to write down all of your commitments.
9. Care Personally and Challenge Directly (Radical Candor)

To be a great boss, you have to do both of these.

- Establishes trust on a team
- Leads to an inspired workplace
- Allows for rapid employee development
"Make sure that you see each person on your team with fresh eyes every day. People evolve, and so your relationships must evolve with them. Care personally; don't put people in boxes and leave them there." - @kimballscott
10. Let go of things outside of your control

- Reduces stress
- Increases productivity
- Supports meaningful work
- Leads to improved life quality

"The more we value things outside our control, the less control we have." - Marcus Aurelius

63 days ago, I decided to hit reset on a year's worth of bad habits.

I'm going to get vulnerable here, but I'm happy to be in a positive place while writing.

Hopefully, this story will connect and help someone who reads it.

2021 seemed like it was a good year for me:

- Successful career
- A lot of time with my family

But not everything was great:

- Struggling with depression
- Stagnant consulting business
- Stepped on a scale and saw a 20 pounds weight gain

I was developing bad habits...
I'm not really sure how much the people around me knew about what I was going through.

Check-in calls were always appreciated.

I started talking to a therapist.

But I was still in a weird place...

Every great leader understands how to thrive in uncertain times.

But 98.6% of people will get stuck in analysis paralysis.

8 tips to dealing with uncertainty that are actually helpful:
1. Let go of control

- Spend your energy focused only on the things in your control
- Ignore everything else
2. Learn to act with less info

- Accept the fact you will never have all the data you need
- Get started anyway

Steve Jobs, Barack Obama, Phil Jackson

These three made creating change look easy.

Here’s how you can move mountains like a pro:
You can not own change for others.

You can support the change, but it's up to them to make the commitment and follow through.

The formula for change gives us three things you need to create change:

1. Dissatisfaction
2. A clear next step
3. A clear vision of the future

(Let's break each down)

When I turned 30, I was a mess.

- Ate garbage
- Working an entry level job
- Spent weekends at the bar

And my wife was expecting our first kid.

I knew it was time for a change.
I cut down my drinking before our first kid, but not enough.

Before our first kid turned one, I got drunk, went on a bike ride, crashed and broke my elbow.

This created more work for my wife, as my ability to help was limited.
We had our second kid 18 months later.

He had a heart condition that required heart surgery within a month of being born.

This was a wake-up call.

I realized I needed to become a different person.
