⚠️KIDS & YOUNG ADULT DEATHS—An inconvenient horrible reality of #DeltaVariant is just how many young people are dying— both % deaths where ~8% of deaths in kids 5-14 are #COVID19, plus 10x⬆️ spike of age 15-24 per capita deaths! 👀 #vaccinate  🧵

2) it is horrible. But I say “inconvenient reality” because many governments - from provinces to states around the world are ignoring this in efforts to push “learn to live with the virus”. That is abominable. Kids are not immune to #COVID19, not matter how many pretend it is.
3) 20 kids dying a week is nothing to scoff at.
4) 120,000 is a lot of kids orphaned. And that’s not including the latest #DeltaVariant wave yet!

JUST IN—After seemingly recovering from #COVID19, a 16-year old boy has just died after diagnosed with post-COVID pediatric inflammatory multi-system syndrome (PIMS). Doctors now say “we are seeing a rise in PIMS in recent weeks”. The boy was unvaccinated.

So I hired a guy (let’s call him Gus) to paint my house—but Gus is unvaccinated. House is empty—so I hired him & chatted with him daily (w/🪟open) hoping he might consider. Day 3—Gus got #vaccinated this morning—he chose Moderna for lowest breakthroughs. Convince your neighbors!
2) I tried lots of lines of reasonings with him — hospitals are full — help keep hospitals empty for others. They seemed to work. It seems he lives a solitary life and mostly watches TV. So there wasn’t many real people for him to talk to. So some casual conversation eased him in
3) I pulled out my phone and showed him lots of CDC graphs and charts. He at first wanted J&J, which I said was good. But he just wanted to not goto the hospital, which I pointed out Moderna had lowest breakthroughs & higher efficacy than 1-shot J&J against hospitalization: see👇

BATHROOMS. RESTAURANTS. SCHOOL CLASSROOMS. OFFICES. Not just hospitals and clinics. The virus can linger in the air for hours. Forget outdated 6-feet droplet 💧rule. Huge superspreading outbreaks from aerosols have been documented. REPEAT: #COVIDisAirborne - pass it on! #COVID19
2) A single case led to a hospital outbreak - despite the max number of people just being 4. The virus stayed in the air for hours infecting many more people.
3) How is aerosol different from large droplets? aerosol study indicates that coronavirus is persistent and stable for many hours. Typical air exchange every 20 min to 4 hrs, depending on ventilation. #COVID19

📍ORPHANED—The number of U.S. children orphaned during the #COVID19 pandemic likely larger than previously estimated—120,000—the toll has been far greater among Black & Hispanic Americans. And this only included up to Feb 2021– more during #DeltaVariant.

2) more than 120,000 U.S. children lost a parent or grandparent who was a primary provider of financial support & care, the study found. Another 22,000 children experienced the death of a secondary caregiver —eg a grandparent who provided housing but not other basic needs.
3) In many instances, surviving parents or other relatives remained to provide for these children. But the researchers used the term “orphanhood” in their study as they attempted to estimate how many children’s lives were upended.

2) “This study suggests that HEPA air cleaners, which remain little-used in Canadian hospitals, are a cheap and easy way to reduce risk from airborne pathogens,” says @DFisman, an epidemiologist at the University of Toronto, Canada, who was not involved in the research.
3) And the scientists found that the filters don’t only protect against SARS-CoV-2. When the filters were switched off, the air contained detectable amounts of other pathogens that cause infections, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pyogenes.
