Managers @EdinburghUni need to make an unequivocal statement in support of Dr Shereen Benjamin, and put a stop to this attempt to stir up hatred against her. We've long been aware that managers at Edinburgh are enabling a culture of intolerance by their failure to act.
The harassment of feminists at @EdinburghUni has been going on for years. They failed to protect their last Rector, @AnnDHenderson, from a campaign of intimidation. She did her best to help women staff and students, but managers wouldn't listen. womansplaceuk.org/2021/06/09/ann…
In December 2019, @EdinburghUni 'postponed' a public seminar on supporting gender non-conforming children in schools after it was targeted by its Staff Pride Network. The event has never been re-scheduled. No explanation from the university.
scotsman.com/news/scottish-…
The 'postponement' happened in the same week as @essexuniversity cancelled @JoPhoenix1 and @GoonerProf. Essex commissioned an independent legal report. @EdinburghUni just brushed it aside and allowed the bullies to keep on promoting their agenda. forwomen.scot/04/02/2020/wom…
Peter Mathieson, @EdinburghUni principal, is quick enough to condemn 'transphobic' stickers and take action against them. When it comes to defending academic freedom, nah, that's less of a priority. thetimes.co.uk/article/princi…
There are alarming accounts naming @EdinburghUni on the @network_gc website (and probably more from Edinburgh that don't name it specifically). They tell a grim tale of intimidation, bullying and attempted thought-policing, affecting staff and students.
gcacademianetwork.org
We think @EdinburghUni's statement about freedom of expression is good (as far as it goes). But to make it reality, managers need to do something to address the campus climate which currently is deeply chilling in relation to sex and gender identity.
ed.ac.uk/university-sec…
The latest attacks on Shereen relate to the speech she gave at our Brighton meeting, in a personal capacity. You can hear it on our website. Nothing she said was remotely hateful. We call on @ucu @UCUScotland and @ucuedinburgh to defend their member.
We stand in solidarity with @Docstockk @selina_todd and all academics targeted on campus by gender identity ideologues and bullies in the name of 'inclusion'. The chilling effect is worst for those on precarious contracts who've been completely silenced. womansplaceuk.org/2021/02/22/def…
Serious preventative as well as disciplinary action needs to be taken by @EdinburghUni and others to defend the right of feminist academics to express their views and pursue truth. Warm words on freedom of expression and academic freedom aren't enough. thetimes.co.uk/article/a14598…

Delighted to publish thread of brilliant speeches at our public meeting #LWDBrighton at #Lab21. Tonia Antoniazzi MP: "There is no way that it is fair for a male-bodied person to be on a sports pitch with a woman in a contact sport".
Outside, steward Ali Ceesay said, "That noise is a perfect example of drowning out women's voices in this debate. I don't have any hate for anyone - we're just here to support women's rights, and every time we try to speak we get harassed". #LWDBrighton
Chair Ceri Williams welcomes attendees: "As Labour supporters, don't we all wish that the Labour front bench had spent just 30 seconds listening to Emma's biology lesson... Maybe she can tell us if dinosaurs have a cervix". #LWDBrighton #Lab21

Andrew Marr: "Is someone who thinks that only women have a cervix welcome in the Labor Party?"
Keir Starmer: "We need to have a mature, respectful debate about trans rights."
The question was about WOMEN.
Starmer continues: "Bear in mind that the trans community are among the most marginalised and abused communities."
We will *never* have the respectful, mature debate about trans rights that Starmer claims to want while politicians are unable even to utter the word 'woman'.
This is a women's rights issue - at stake is who should access women's rights, spaces, provisions and on what basis. Responding to questions about women with a lecture on trans oppression is the problem, not the solution. Thank you @AndrewMarr9 for pursuing this. #WomenMatter

@UKLabour MPs really need to get to grips with a thorough understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and single-sex exemptions @Keir_Starmer. We suggest a starting point would be @EHRC guidance issued July 2018 #SexNotGender #SexMatters
@UKLabour MPs' understanding of EA2010 would benefit from this excellent overview "The single sex and separate sex exceptions in the Equality Act 2010" It explains current misunderstandings re single-sex exemptions wrongly promoted by @stonewalluk as law. sex-matters.org/wp-content/upl…
@UKLabour needs to urgently remind all Labour MPs that a High Court judge ruled that gender-critical beliefs fall under 2010 Equality Act protected characteristics & are a genuine & important philosophical position that deserve to be protected. linkedin.com/pulse/forstate… #SexMatters

@SadiqKhan says "One of the things about the Labour Party is it’s a chance to debate, discuss, have disagreement in a respectful way". That's not reality for those arguing for women's rights in @UKLabour today.
standard.co.uk/news/uk/rosie-…
Respectful discussion must be based on credible, robust evidence. When @SadiqKhan irresponsibly uses discredited statistics on suicide as though they're established fact he's part of the problem - creating a climate where discussion is impossible.

@Womans_Place_UK are still waiting for a response from to their letter (signed by 4k people) asking for an explanation of the removal of @polblonde from her role. How about it, @SadiqKhan @SophieKLinden? Respectful discussion requires engagement.

Time to end the silence on women's rights. A thread. #DontBeADavey

This morning @AndrewMarr9 asked @EdwardJDavey repeatedly "What is wrong with the phrase woman - adult human female?". Davey couldn't even bring himself to say the word 'woman' in response.
Asked about a real woman in his party - @Nat_freespeech who's been banned from standing for any LibDem position - Davey made no response. Still he could only repeat the thought-terminating cliches and mantras taught to him by Stonewall.
crowdjustice.com/case/natalie-b…
This is what erasure looks like. Asked a question about women, or a question about a particular woman, too many politicians dissemble and take refuge in cliches about trans rights. The language we use to name ourselves is being lost, and with it, the ability to discuss our lives.

Andrew Marr: "What's wrong with this phrase? Woman - adult human female?" Ed Davey: "LibDems believe that trans rights are really important because trans people are some of the most discriminated against in our society."
The question was about WOMEN.
Marr re-states his question "what's wrong with woman- adult human female?"
Davey: "I've made it clear what our position is on trans rights, no-one can criticise me for that".
Bampots who can't even say the word 'woman' should not be in politics.
Davey goes on to talk about the 'toxic' debate. It's not a culture war that has toxified this debate - it's the misrepresentation of anyone wanting to talk about women's rights, and shouting us down as bigots and transphobes.
