So, I heard on the radio about Jason Kenney wanting to open the constitution to eliminate equalization payments. 1/15 #cdnpoli #abpoli #AbLeg #Canada
nationalpost.com/news/politics/…
So, aside from the fact that it makes it look like Albertans are a bunch of mean-spirited, cruel, greedy tight-wads, what does this mean? 2/15
Well, the conservatives have been chomping at the bit for quite a number of years now to open the constitution and hack out the bits they don't like. 3/15 Image
They have been deprived of this by virtue of not having the full constitutional formula - a federal government and 7 provinces representing at least 50% of the population on side. And they were denied again this past election. 4/15
I really think what Kenney is doing now has nothing to do with equalization, or Albertans. After all, when has he ever cared about Albertans? And he was one of the architects of the current equalization formula. 5/15
No. The referendum was an end-run around the constitutional amendment formula. A lot of Albertans don't understand equalization. But they voted for the foaming-at-the-mouth angry "Fair Deal". Never mind that most Albertans have it pretty good compared to other Canadians. 6/15
And what bits are they most worked up about? Well, it's not really equalization... 7/15 Image
What the conservatives really want is the ability to discriminate, to jail those who criticize and disagree, and shut down democracy in all practical terms. They are about control and dominance and funneling money to their friends and donors. 8/15
They are looking for a way in, because Canadians keep stubbornly refusing to give them the magic formula. Just like they tried sex-selective abortion as a way to get a law, any law, on the books about abortion, they are trying an end run on tearing up the constitution. 9/15
They are ravenous to turn this country into a wealth factory for their friends, and have no care for the people who actually live here. The UCP have been gleefully shutting down or cutting back supports for Albertans who are the most vulnerable. 10/15
They danced in a fountain to celebrate cutting protection for LGBTQ2+ youth. We are governed by monsters. 11/15 Image
Why else would a governing party allow people to be uninformed, to encourage perpetuation of misinformation about what equalization really is? The UCP did squat all to try to inform anyone about how equalization works. They played the myth card. 12/15
It was never about a "fair deal" for Albertans. It was a matter of finding a hot button issue that would. at the very least, provoke a constitutional debate. And, just maybe, let the conservatives get their cold, clammy, tiny hands on the constitution and charter. 13/15
And it wasn't really a win. About 1/4 of Albertans voted on the equalization referendum, and of those, 61.7% voted the way Kenney wanted them to.
"Just over a million Albertans voted on the equalization question" 14/15
calgary.ctvnews.ca/ridiculous-in-…
So, what's 61.7% of 25%? And can we get a Venn diagram of those who voted yes, those who are unvaccinated, those who belong to organizations like Alberta Proud & yellow vesters, those who did not finish high school? Now that would be interesting... 15/15

Re: what happened today w/ the PM and Chief Rosanne Casimir. Does the chief feel her people would do better with a CPC government? Because objectively, they would not. I'm really not sure what the game is here. Perfection is rare in any situation, but kicking the best thing 1/12
That has come along in 200 years suggests reconciliation really isn't the goal. Sorry, I'm just a settler. But I don't get what is going on here. We all have to sometimes take the best, not the ultimate perfect option, as we go through life. 2/12
It's not just Th'emlups te Secwepemc. It's JWR, it's other band councils across Canada. It's Cindy Blackstock, as much as I admire her work for Indigenous children. I do not understand why some Indigenous people & groups seem to be trying to undermine the current government. 3/12

Just once more, for those who still haven't voted: The equalization referendum is pure political theatre, just like voting for senators. It means absolutely nothing, changes nothing. Vote No to tell Jason Kenney you are not bamboozled by his slippery sales pitches. 1/10
Why is the equalization referendum meaningless? First of all, Alberta DOES NOT write a cheque to anywhere to pay for equalization. That just is not a thing. 2/10
Albertans along with all Canadians who earn an income pay federal income tax. We all pay the same tax rate, whether you are in Nunavut or PEI or Ontario, or BC or Alberta. If you make $200K in Alberta you pay the exact same tax rate as every other Canadian who makes $200K 3/10

Are there any men in the upper ranks of the Canadian military who have not misbehaved? 1/9
theglobeandmail.com/politics/artic…
Is it the case that those who are now old enough and experienced and decorated enough to be considered for these senior roles came up through the ranks in a different, more misogynistic time? Keeping in mind that these men would have been coming into the military in the 1990s 2/9
Which is hardly Mad Men era, but perhaps military culture is more stagnant than business culture in recognizing women as persons, etc. Or, conversely, are the sort of men who keep rising through the ranks in the military possessed of particular personality characteristics... 3/9

I'm going to quote tweet this because I have a lot to say on this topic. Sorry, but Twitter is very tiresome if you are trying to post a series of replies... 1/9
First, yes, "people" are the ones who decide to use whatever is at hand when they are angry or whatever. But it isn't that simple. People are not born "criminal". Yes, some people are born sociopathic, i.e. lacking the ability to feel empathy. 2/19
But most sociopaths do not commit crime. They tend to do well in business or politics because stepping over people doesn't bother them, but they aren't out on street corners randomly shooting at people. 3/19

So... Andrew Scheer was found to be receiving monies from the CPC (that's donor money) to pay for his kids' tuition in a private school, and a van, etc, and he didn't win the election, and the pot boiled over and he had to be replaced. 1/8
Now O'Toole is being revealed (by a right wing organization) to have been feeding at the trough as well. He is on his way out the door. But this raises some questions. 2/8
Is abusing and taking advantage of monetary gain opportunities just endemic among those who run for leader of the CPC? Or are there deals being struck behind the scenes? 3/8

First, and I can't believe I need to say this, but apparently I do: DO NOT THREATEN PEOPLE! Do not threaten journalists. Problems in our media are not going to be solved with violence.

OK, now I would like someone, a journalist perhaps, to explain to me why... 1/20
An article is now out fomenting outrage against the PM and the current government over something that was done by the Harper government. The facts, had anyone in the media bothered to google them, were in the Globe & Mail at the time. Simple search. 2/20
The new cabinet, including JWR, was sworn in November 4th, The decision was made October 30th. Are we operating under conditions of retroactive responsibility now? Anyone care to blame PM Trudeau for the 1950 flood in Winnipeg? 3/20
