#Pfizer: 17,668,828 (so we have 9,400,292 jabs left)
5. @HealthZA's dashboard says we have 5,709,244 #JnJ + 9,400,292 #Pfizer doses left. Is this accurate?
Not entirely. The actual nr of doses left = lower as the dashboard only reflects the jabs entered in the #EVDS. Some sites capture doses on paper + only enter them later.
6. How many #JnJ doses are we expecting 4 the rest of Nov?
1. Cold chain failure 2. Expired doses (exacerbated by decreased demand after doses had already been sent 2 sites) 3. Opening vials close 2 the end of a day + not enough people arrive to use all doses
10. Any other reason why 10% of #VaccineRollOutSA doses go to waste?
Yes.
Pfizer doses arrive in 6-dose vials. It’s complicated to extract the doses, so we often only manage to get 5 doses out of the vials.
11. Fewer people than expected are coming forward to get vaccinated (we’re currently doing fewer than 200,000 doses per day). Do any of our current doses run the risk of expiring before they get used?
No.
Why not? Let’s first look at how expiry dates work (next tweet).
12. #Pfizer expiry dates = 9 mnths from the date of manufacture when they’re stored at -70 °C, but when moved to 2-8 °C the expiry is reduced to 31 days.
#JnJ expiry dates: Two years from date of manufacture when stored at -20 °C or 4,5 months (135 days) when stored at 2-8 °C.
13. There are doses that do expire when moved to warmer storage conditions. But all stock which is kept centrally is stored at the lowest possible temperature to i.e. -70 °C for #Pfizer and -20 °C #JnJ so they last as long as possible.
14. Also, to prevent #Pfizer doses from expiring (we’ve received far more #Pfizer than #JnJ), @healthza had fewer Pfizer doses delivered in Oct, so that supply better matches demand.
15. Why did some of the doses (part of the 10% wastage) expire then? Because demand decreased rapidly over the last 2 months, there were some doses that had already been delivered to sites that did expire, but supply is now being matched to demand to prevent the expiry of doses.
16. What’s the average expiry date of our current #Pfizer doses?
But to last until then, the jabs must be stored at -20 °C. When they're stored at 2-8 °C, they last for 4,5 months (135 days). So when they expire depends on which temp they're stored at.

2. What % of adults have received at least 1 dose of #COVISD19 vaccine, so 1 shot of #JnJ (fully vaccinated) or 1 shot of #Pfizer (partially vaccinated)?
39% of adults, or 15.5 million people
Why is this important? @healthza
's goal = 70% of adults must have had 1 jab by Dec
3. Will we make @heatlhza's goal to have 70% of adults vaccinated with 1 dose of #JnJ/#Pfizer by Dec?
No. @healthza
is now aiming for:
70% of adults of 50+
Where are we with this?
60+: 63.13%
50-59: 56.8%
Everyone of 50+ = 60.2% (so we're 9.8% or 1 mil jabs from the goal)
14 days to 3 months after taking the 2nd shot: :
- 94% effectiveness @ COVID-related death
- 92% effectiveness @ COVID-related hospitalisation
2. What is real-world effectiveness?
It’s data from an actual vaccine roll-out. During studies jabs = used under tightly controlled conditions. In the real world those conditions = more fluid. Real-world data = how well jabs work outside of a trial.
3. Is there a difference between the protection offered by 1 dose of the #Pfizer jab and 2 doses?
Yes.
- 1 dose = 78% effective @ hospitalisation (28 days after you’ve had a jab)
- 2 doses = 94% effective @ hospitalisation (14 days after the 2nd jab)
[Thread] 1. What's happening with #COVID vaccine boosters in SA?
Nicholas Crisp, @heatlhza: 1. SA = not yet vaccinated enough people to focus on boosters for large groups of people 2. HCWs = special group as they get exposed to #COVIVD19 more so their infection risk = higher
2. Crisp: 1. Some #HealthWorkers vaccinated in the #Sisonke trial were vaccinated 8 months ago, so they may need booster shots 2. They will receive 2nd #JnJ doses in a study starting in Nov
3. What about people with weak immune systems who may need boosters?
Crisp:
The MAC has advised that people with a specific set of immunocompromised conditions get a 3rd #Pfizer/2nd #JnJ dose 28 days after they were fully vaccinated. This is not a booster, but an extra dose.
[THREAD] 1. How will voting stations prepare for Election Day?
Each station will have: 1. Hand sanitisers 2. Bins to dispose of cotton-buts used for inking/PPE 3. Posters clarifying procedures 4. Canisters with disinfectant voting stations before opening and after closing
2. All voting materials used at voting stations will be sanitised, including pens. It's preferred for voters to bring their own pens (to reduce the #COVID infection risk), but pens will also be provided and sanitised before and after each person using them.
3. What will happen with special votes (this will happen on Sat and Sun)? Officials will follow preplanned routes to people's homes and tick special voters off a list as they have cast their vote.
