Yesterday Woodside told the ASX it had reached Final Investment Decision to open up the Scarborough offshore gas field - part of the most climate-polluting project ever proposed in Australia. It's a big deal and could have disastrous consequences for WA and the world.
Here’s why:
Let’s start with the magnificent wildlife that is at risk. The Scott Reef complex is home to pygmy blue whales, endangered turtles and numerous other wonderful creatures, all of which are threatened by Woodside’s Scarborough project:
aims.gov.au/sites/default/…
Then there’s the small matter of the global climate emergency… The IEA has recommended that there should be no new gas projects at all, to give the world a chance of a safer climate. On that logic alone this mega beast should not proceed:
iea.org/reports/net-ze…
The Scarborough project is forecast to produce an extra 1.6bn tonnes of climate emissions. The equivalent of building 15 new coal-burning power stations:
reneweconomy.com.au/woodsides-plan…
And let’s remember that just weeks ago in Glasgow the world recommitted to keeping global warming under 1.5 degrees - this project is inconsistent with what is needed to give us a chance of keeping within that objective:
ukcop26.org/cop26-keeps-1-…
Public outrage about Scarborough is increasing.
The FID decision has come earlier than expected and reeks of corporate desperation to rush the thing through so as to avoid scrutiny and opposition: abc.net.au/news/2021-11-2…
Some more about the direct environmental impacts:
If a major incident was to occur, there are eight marine parks and protected areas that could be impacted:
The project involves blasting & dredging over a million tonnes of seabed, driving giant concrete piles into the ocean floor & dumping millions of tons of crushed coral and rock within the Dampier Archipelago – the richest area of marine biodiversity in WA:
ccwa.org.au/scarborough_ln…
Earlier this year the ocean was literally on fire, due to a leak from an underwater gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Scarborough project would mean a highly risky 430km of underwater gas pipeline through WA’s oceans:
So, does FID mean the project is going ahead? No. There’s a long road ahead.
The project still needs approvals from at least five regulatory authorities:
smh.com.au/business/compa…
Commercially, the project still only has customers for a third of its gas:
afr.com/companies/ener…
The proposal also faces an unresolved legal challenge to the primary approvals process in the WA Supreme Court. Additional legal challenges remain possible:
theguardian.com/australia-news…
So, what about Woodside’s corporate reputation?
The world has committed to rapidly slashing emissions, but Woodside is planning to increase carbon pollution over the next decade jeopardising the future of West Australians and the world:
theguardian.com/australia-news…
The ASX Announcement also confirmed the $40b merger of Woodside and BHP Petroleum businesses - creating one of the world’s biggest fossil fuel companies smack bang in the middle of our biggest planetary crisis, caused by fossil fuels.
theguardian.com/business/2021/…
Meanwhile, the world is moving, and Australia is being left behind - yesterday Japan, Australia’s biggest LNG customer, announced plans to shift its transition to green power:
afr.com/world/asia/ene…
In the middle of a planetary climate emergency and so soon after #COP26, Woodside’s scheme to unleash the Scarborough Gas project on the planet is grotesquely cynical, showing real contempt for the safety and wellbeing of people and nature.
For so long as the company persists with the climate-wrecking Scarborough gas project, the corporate name of Woodside will become synonymous with pollution, destruction and threats to the wellbeing of the people of Western Australia and the world.

The real life consequences of climate inaction for nature and wildlife can get lost in the detail of policy, conferences and targets.
So, let's take a look at the real impact on an icon.
What does Scott Morrison's climate policy really mean for our Great Barrier Reef?
A thread:
First some history. Back in 1981, the Great Barrier Reef was declared as World Heritage under UNESCO. Australia promised the world that “to the utmost of its resources” our nation would “do all it can” to protect the Reef: whc.unesco.org/en/conventiont…
Flash forward to early 2016, the first of recent mass bleaching events occurred on the Great Barrier Reef. Scientists estimated 22% of coral was killed, clearly linked this to climate change and noted the need for urgent action to counter impacts. nature.com/articles/d4158…

Today Australia was awarded the Fossil of the COP - a ‘prize’ given by a coalition of civil society orgs to the worst performing country throughout the #COP26 climate conference.
Here’s a recap of how @ScottMorrisonMP earned such a disappointing award:
The Morrison government’s failures began before #COP26, with its net zero ‘plan’ which did not meet the ambitions required for emissions cuts this decade, or include legislation or a mechanism to ever reach net zero. It was derided across the world:
On the eve of #cop26 at the G20 leaders summit Morrison doubled down on his lacklustre approach and Australia was accused of blocking global progress and pushing back on phasing out fossil fuels:

Big news from #COP26 overnight - the draft decision text is not perfect, but does call for an accelerated phase out of coal and fossil fuel subsidies, both absolutely critical steps to securing a safer future for our kids and planet:
More news via thread:
thenewdaily.com.au/life/science/e…
China and the US also announced a landmark agreement to work together on tackling the climate crisis - it acknowledges climate change as an existential crisis, focusing on the 1.5C goal and action this decade (two things Australia remains recalcitrant on):
smh.com.au/world/europe/e…
Unfortunately for us, Australia’s representatives are still blocking action & lobbying to weaken the #COP26 decision text - working with Saudi Arabia to try and remove references to 1.5C (what do they want to target?!) & the phasing out of fossil fuels.

Today @pocockdavid said fossil fuel advertising is the new tobacco advertising and called out the @wallabies for being sponsored by Santos.
So, I'm curious. What about @AGLAustralia?
Which sports teams are taking money from Australia's biggest climate polluter?
Here's a thread:
@WestCoastEagles list AGL, Australia’s biggest climate polluter, as a Premier Partner. You might notice the AGL logo on their player’s shorts:
westcoasteagles.com.au/club/partners
@PAFC list AGL, Australia’s biggest climate polluter, as their official energy partner (and for the double whammy) the Club’s Platinum Partners also include Santos. It is clearly time for Port ‘Power’ to shift to renewables. portadelaidefc.com.au/club/partners

Yesterday, @ScottMorrisonMP announced his government’s new electric vehicle strategy.
Unfortunately, just like his net zero ‘plan’ - the ‘strategy’ is just more empty guff - lacking any substance to achieve emissions reductions.
Here’s a thread on why:
#COP26 #auspol
First, the Morrison government has refused to implement fuel efficiency standards, requiring cars to become cleaner over time. This is a tried and tested EV uptake tactic & the bare minimum - adopted by more than 80% of the global vehicle market:
abc.net.au/news/2021-10-1…
Thanks to these lax environmental standards - which have been called out by global auto-makers time and time again - there is no reason for manufacturers to ship to Australia, and no reason to invest at home:

Scott Morrison has left #CoP26 with Australia’s global reputation clearly tarnished.
Breaking last night, a new investigation reveals a shameful history of diplomatic bullying to water down climate action & buy silence in our own neighbourhood - the Pacific.
Here's a thread:
A quick heads up. Normally I include a source in each tweet - but everything here is sourced from @GreenpeaceAP’s investigation, based on interviews with present and former Pacific leaders, as well as Australian diplomats and academics: hubs.ly/H0-wXWc0
Starting back in 1997, the Australian government under John Howard coerced members of the South Pacific Forum to remove its concern about climate change risks and its support for emissions reductions measures from the Forum’s official communique.
