Education Minister Adriana LaGrange announces they will slow down full implementation of the update full k-6 curriculum, slated to go into effect next September.
LaGrange says this comes after hearing from teachers who said they had concerns about workload and resource constraints.
Instead, they will phase in updated curriculum by staggering in subjects, beginning this fall with English, Math and Phys Ed.
Lagrange says delaying the implementation of the updated curriculum entirely is not fair to students.
Says its integral to improve outcomes in reading, writing and math- which she says will be done with this staggered approach.
LaGrange says students will learn about important topics like consent and finance from a young age.
Lagrange says they are looking at additional resources for teachers.
An advisory panel will also offer advice on three first subjects, and longer implementation timelines for further subjects.
Lagrange says they are releasing a new K-6 design blueprint for a revised plan for social studies.
She says this course was the one that drew the most feedback among Alberta parents and teachers.
LaGrange says among the updates in Alberta's draft curriculum content is the science component that now includes a reference that climate change can now be caused by human and natural causes.
