Some thoughts on the Calgary arena deal #yyc #yyccc #yycarena. First, from empirical evidence we know:

1. New venues don't have significant regional econ impact mostly b/c household sports spending is substitutable (if not spent on sports, it's spend on other entertainment).
2. While new sports venues don't typically help a city economically overall, they can have positive localized impact by slightly (+10-15%) increasing property values at the neighbourhood scale. So not economic boosters, but can help catalyze development in the immediate area.
3. That dev'mt may not be new but rather displaces dev'mt that might otherwise happen in adjacent areas (since absorption is tied to general economic conditions -- no reason to think the arena would generate more net office or housing demand in the city).

I see the UCP is testing new messaging to attempt to deflect attention from the cost of their short-sighted decision to halt ongoing construction of the Edm Clinical Lab Hub.

To be clear - this was about a carefully considered plan to improve patient care in Alberta. #ableg
Lab infrastructure serving #yeg & northern AB has long been in need of expansion & investment & is now nearing the edge of its capacity.

And it's not a question of simply buying some new equipment, though that's important. #ableg
Current labs lack the space & appropriate infrastructure (HVAC, IT, etc.) to house it. Staff are running between different floors & buildings to deliver samples.

I toured the labs at Grey Nuns & UofA recently, spoke w/ staff & saw it first-hand. Has the Minister? #ableg

For some perspective on the #yyc biz PTax challenge. Here's a short thread.

It's all about the drop in property values downtown.

The Bow was worth $1.4b in 2015. Today, it's down to $775m.

At today's rates, that loss means ~$12m/yr lower muni govt revenue. From one building.
There's more. Bow Valley Square was worth $900m in 2015. Today, it's down to $236m. That's another $12m in lost muni govt revenue for #yyc.
It goes on and on. Eight Avenue Place was worth nearly $800m in 2015. Today it's worth barely over $390m. That's over $7m in lost muni govt revenue.

Fear & Loathing in Alberta: the Big Fat Lie of Election 2019 THREAD #GentThreads #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli #yeg #yyc
First of all, thank you Edmonton, for being the intellectual & moral hub of this entire province. The rest of us, evidently, were all too ready to elect to power a team already revealed as white supremacists, homophobes, misogynists, frauds, criminals & climate deniers /2 #abpoli

Change in the program at #yyccc : 2019 tax debate is up right now.
Option 1 for 2019. The takeaway wouldn't be much different than what was discussed last November during budget. A 3.45% hike. Average home would pay $105 more in 2019. Would result in close to 2% cut to commercial tax bills. #yyccc #yyc
Option 2 is a more dramatic shift to homeowners, and bigger break for business.

Average home would see $200 increase in 2019 (if no rebate is approved) #yyccc

After looking at the platforms, additional information and the leaders debate this is what I am let with. ALL parties will be running a deficit. Oil revenue paid for a lot of things which allowed us to have low taxes 1/ 18
#abvote #abpoli #shpk #yeg #yyc #strathco
Oil prices crash, we have been through this often. And every time it happens it is the same. Jobs are lost, people's lives go off the rails and the Alberta economy crashes. This time is no different than the last time or the time before. We have some hard choices to make 2/18
Just looking at the top 2 parties. At the end of the next 4 year term #UCP will have us at 86 bill in debt and #abndp will have us at 95 bill in debt. This is a difference of 9 bill over a 4 year term or 2.25 bill per year. So what does each plan get us? 3/18

This is an interesting poll, and like all the other more-recent polls, it has some wrinkles that deserve to be unpacked.
#ableg #abvote #abpoli
The published document includes the questionnaire, the cross-tabs, etc, which is super-awesome because it helps shed some light on why different polls might yield different results. Often these details are hidden behind a paywall.
#ableg #abvote #abpoli
I believe this is a commissioned poll (for the Global Petroleum Show?) as well, like the recent EKOS poll (which was commissioned for Unifor). These tend to get excluded from poll-aggregators for a few good reasons:

So, it looks like it’s not going to be a coronation, after all! A large poll conducted by EKOS for Unifor suggests that the wheels are starting to fall off Kenney’s wagon. #ableg #abpoli #abvote #yyc #yeg
The NDP has strengthened its lead in Edmonton and closed the gap in Calgary.
Also, a clear majority of Albertans now pick Notley as the “best Premier” over Kenney.

About 10 years ago, I was walking home from a slow-pitch baseball game and party with my team. I was a bit drunk, so I walked instead of driving. On the way home I was mugged from behind and woke up in the Rockyview Hospital in #YYC, with a #TBI #concussion. (1 of 13)
I've had multiple concussions from athletics. Football, hockey, rugby & skiing, plus ran over by a car, not once but twice. (think Super Dave Osborne) plus what I have learned since, repeated mildTBIs from the sports. Likely result, I have #CTE. I get worse each year, not better.
Here is what is happening now. I retired from my business some years ago and stopped working completely, 3.5 years ago. I have other progressive diseases besides #CTE, like #COPD #Arthritis #Cancer and more. It is a heavy load and crippling my abilities.

Albertans have some decisions to make regarding what direction they want our province to go. I am hearing a lot about track records and taxes on all sides of the fence so I wanted to throw my 2 cents out into the internet universe. #ableg #abpoli #abvote 1/
Society pays taxes for a reason. Those dollars collected are designed to go to needed infrastructure, repair & maintenance as well as programs that save us money in the long run and make our society a better place to live. It's literally the governments JOB to spend those $$ 2/
Both sides have a track record. Albertans need to decide which track record they like and which track record they want to see for Alberta's future. I have chosen my view and my side and I would like to tell you why I think we are #BetterOffWithRachel 3/

Council will CONSIDER a proposal to fund FOUR major capital projects tonight.

- new arena
- BMO Centre expansion
- Arts Commons (phase 1)
- Fieldhouse
The City's chief financial officer just said she is only comfortable moving forward with a single project, not all four. Asked why, she expressed concern about the City's liquidity and costs related to Green Line construction. #yyccc #yyc

Since Tuesday’s meeting where the @albertaNDP and @Alberta_UCP voted together to cut funding for smaller parties in #ableg, I've run a few scenarios. Now that we know the final formula, it's actually worse that I thought. Here's some background on this:… /1
Under the NDP/UCP plan, as majorities get bigger, proportionately less money goes to small opposition parties, even if they reach the new magic number of four MLAs for official party status #ableg /2
This could be a mistake that comes from not paying attention to the details, but given the subcommittee tasked with coming up with a new formula has been working on this for more than *two years* it sure looks like a deliberate attempt to disadvantage smaller parties #ableg /3

Dear @CCTCA and @albertateachers: I've resisted posting a lot of the vile details of Andrew Evans' case, but since you've chosen to double down on your ludicrous decision to bring him in as a speaker, a thread. You believe in education, right? Educate yourselves.
Andrew Evans murdered Nicole Parisien in an apartment in Kitsilano in 2007. He had solicited her for sex for $200, and after a day of drinking, marijuana, and ecstasy tabs, he couldn't get an erection. And because he couldn't, he strangled her to death with his bare hands.
He rolled her up in linens and threw her body in some bushes. Then he fled to Calgary. It was only the advice of a lawyer that he turned himself in.

So, I see a lot of people - including a lot of media - lining up to cry VINDICATION on the Jeromy Farkas story. Here's why this is terribly wrongheaded.
Let's start with the facts. On Dec. 17's regular Council session, part of the agenda included a motion from Councilor Sutherland (@Ward4Ward1), which called for a salary freeze for City Council. Here's the full text of that:
During the debate on this motion, confusion arose over Council salaries, which are tied to the average weekly earnings of Albertans. The city's Chief Financial Officer, Carla Male, seemed to indicate that voting in favour of the motion would actually result in a net GAIN.

THREAD The mass homelessness we're seeing in Toronto & Canada is without question a disaster. It's a disaster on the same scale - or bigger - then most of the biggest natural disasters in Canadian history. So what would happen if we treated it as such? 1/
1st let's look at the scale of #homelessness. It happens to at least 235,000 Canadians per year, 35,000 every night and costs $7 BILLION per year. It kills an unknown number of people & reduces life expectancy for thousands. 2/
The scale of #homelessness is the same our our worst natural disasaters. We have to respond accordingly. Municipal disaster response processes provide a model for ending #homelessness. What does that look like & how could it apply? 3/

The authors, Melissa and Chris Bruntlett, decided to take the plunge and do away with car ownership (saving $800 per month!). Carshare was the tipping point, but they mostly stuck to walking, cycling and transit, using rental cars for the occasional road trip.
