And we’re off - right on time for the Wildrose Independence inaugural AGM.
President Rick Northey notes they do not have availability to hear from the “floor” today but next time maybe.

The morning events will consist of speakers and the new board election.
Dwayne Hill is the first speaker.
Says he’s been involved in the separatist movement for many years but ramped up in 2015 after Trudeau’s election.
DHill thanks those who came before him, Alberta First, and others.
Says after the NEP was brought in, people started paying attention.
2019 showed Albertans are powerless to stop liberalism even as the province fully rejects it.

I have an emergency that I would like my Twitter Family's #Help with.

I am worried about my friend Jenn and her co workers that run @HarvestHillsYYC.

They have run themselves ragged and need help.

There's a reason why Jenn and the team have not posted or shared a lot lately on their social media accounts.

She is probably going to kill me for doing this (RIP @Hell_Berta)......but I need to do something for them. I can't sit back and watch them burn themselves out.
As everyone knows, Jenn was in a car accident in Dec. and she was hurt pretty bad. I am talking grade 3 concussion bad and really really bad whiplash and other injuries.

She is at home recovering and her fellow board members and dedicated volunteers have picked up and helped.

Of 853 individual comments on the Benga mine currently on the Impact Assessment Agency's registry, 97.9 % express strong opposition to the Grassy Mtn strip mine. You can read them for yourself, here:…
@TheNarwhal @CBCFletch @DrewPAnderson #StoptheBengaMine
I read or scanned all of them. The authors appear to be almost exclusively Albertans, and they are fiercely opposed to the approval of any further coal mining on the eastern slopes. @GeorgeMonbiot @Martin_Lukacs @guardianeco @HMcPhersonMP #abpoli #cdnpoli
The opponents are impressively well-informed about the environmental risks and socioeconomic arguments surrounding the proposed Grassy Mountain coal mine. @ABWilderness @cpawssab @TheTyee @AlbertaViews @ABlawg @ABEnvNet @APTNNews @CBCNews

This evening at 4:45pm we got a call from a social worker that works with seniors. She called us in a frenzy asking us for immediate help.

She told us of an emergency so extreme that her voice shook with concern over one of her clients.

#YYC #Calgary #CalgarySeniors #hope
This is what she said:

"Hello Jen, I was hoping I would be able to contact you before I left my work for the day in regards to a rather important situation that came across my desk this afternoon. I hope you have the time to chat?"

I said "Yes of course, how can we help?" #care
She said "We have a senior lady that is struggling so much that she has been going door to door asking for food from others in her complex."

I was quiet and honestly speechless.

I said "Of course we can and we will help. What is it that you need." #FEEDYYC #FoodHamper #helping

Yesterday, we had a call. A call that made 3 of my volunteers cry.

You see, an individual in need contacted @HarvestHillsYYC and asked for help with food. We have permission to tell his story and share his request with everyone.
It started off with a phone call to a new volunteer that was on her first on call shift over the Christmas Break. "N" called and left a message in which he asked to be called back as soon as possible.

So our volunteer Melanie returned his call.
She asked N what he needed help with & he said he needed help with food/rent cause he could pay his rent & not eat for the month & maybe eat once every 3 to 4 days....or pay some of his rent and be able to eat everyday and hope he could find the money to pay the rest of his rent.

Honestly I'm livid right now. Jason Kenney just told Albertans that his Ministers and MLAs didn't need to follow the public health recommendations because he didn't tell them to personally.

He is literally putting lives at risk.

#ableg #covid19ab #yeg #yyc #yql

While tens of thousands of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine went undistributed - the Minister responsible for Alberta's Emergency Management Agency was vacationing in Hawaii.

Kenney says Emergency Management isn't a factor during the pandemic.

#ableg #covid19ab #yeg #yyc #yql

I don't believe for a second the Premiers Office didn't know where Allard was during the holidays. Who was the acting Minister while she was away? This is par for the course in our Government.

He's only speaking now because they got caught.

I'm at the scene in Falconridge where a Calgary police officer was killed during a traffic stop late last night. Arrived as they were towing away his squad car. A single white rose lies on a snowbank in memory of Sgt. Andrew Harnett. #yyc Image
The incident happened just outside a gas station off Falconridge Drive. Can see a mark on a curb where the offender's vehicle appeared to jump the curb. There's also a discarded paramedic's glove on the ground where it happened. ImageImageImage

This list is not comprehensive & I undoubtedly missed a few amazing stories/deals so feel free to add them! What is clear is that our community's economic strategy is the right one to rebuild & futureproof #YYC's economy. I wouldn't have championed it if I didn't believe in it. Image
The list is mapped to the 4 pillars of the strategy (Innovation, Talent, Place, & Business Environment) & our established (Transportation & Logistics, Agribusiness, Energy) & emerging industry clusters (Life Sciences, Financial/Professional Services, and Creative Industries). ImageImage

a 🧵 poem

Jason Kenney taught me that cruelty wears different faces. Cruelty will put on a festive holiday sweater, sit in a red armchair in front of a Christmas tree, smiling, hands folded nicely in his lap as he lies to your face.

Cruelty will compromise morals and blur lines, standing in your driveway,
red faced,
spitting mad,
forked tongue.

Cruelty will not be able to read the room. He'll make publicly make ignorant comments about other Canadians, stand by those comments, and still think he's all that and a bag of Cheezies.

There is an old saying in that when people show you who they are - believe them the first time, and for @caylanford she has demonstrated clearly that her transphobic rhetoric and ignorance is nothing less than disgustingly appalling. #LGBT

#abpoli #ableg #yyc
What experts such as @caylanford seam to ignore are the 43% of trans and gender diverse youth whom report not having a single person they feel safe talking with about their gender identity or expression.
Experts like @caylanford also ignore that 41% of transgender or gender diverse youth have attempted suicide, with 73% reporting engaging in self harm behaviours - and she has the disgusting audacity to call these individuals a social contagion.

Good morning, I am currently in a virtual Calgary courtroom watching today's constitutional challenge against COVID-19 restrictions. There are easily over a hundred people watching as well, and a big lineup outside the courthouse as well. #yyc #ableg
The challenge has been launched by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms. Their release here says they are challenging the "Alberta government cancelling Christmas."…
The fun thing about this is there is a live chat feature as well, unlike in a normal court where you have to stay quiet. Here is one interesting comment off the top.

After a day of delivering shopping for and hampers with @merylyyc, I was dropping my daughter off at her dads for the week when I first got a call from a single mom that needed help.

Picture below is a truck full of hampers!
I answered the phone and explained the steps this person on the phone needed to do to apply for assistance. She told me she would head to the site right away.....and she did.

So this 🚨Emergency🚨 came in tonight. (See photo of email).
I immediately contacted her and asked her what she immediately needed. She explained that she needed to get out of the room she is sharing with her children & into a basement suite

She then said she wanted a meal or two so she could eat like a family with her kids for Christmas.

*THREAD* I'm one of the local co-chairs for @HSAAlberta Calgary Metro Paramedics.

Paramedics in Calgary work in a variety of functional specialties and I'd like to give you a brief rundown of how we work and where we're at risk. #VaccinateYourParamedics 1/12
First let me say that @ahs_ems has done an amazing job of supplying us with PPE. Everyone in AHS EMS has been supplied with exactly what we need, when we need it. When the world felt like it was falling apart in March 2020, we were as safe as we could be. 2/12
Our emergency paramedics go into highly contaminated environments and risky situations each day. We preform point of care risk assessments even if no symptoms are reported in the dispatch notes. We have been lied to and misled out of fear by patients, had PPE ripped off. 3/12

I’m not one for holier than thou tweets. But @CalgaryPolice just issued “safety recommendations” for reporters covering the ongoing “politically charged protests” in #yyc. Police have received reports of harassment and intimidation by groups that have an “anti-media” bias.
So it’s come to this has it? People who have chosen to bear witness so that their fellow citizens can be informed have become “a target for verbal abuse and intimidation”. In Canada. In 2020.
It’s a slow creep from that sort of crap to physical assault. All of this to say that the constant casual slagging of journalism so common on this platform and others has real world consequences.

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: We ID’d 1,887 cases yesterday & completed 20K+ tests. There are 716 people in hospital, incl 136 in ICU. 15 deaths were reported. My sympathies go out to all those grieving a loss today. (1/6)
R value for AB over the last 7 days was 0.98 - 1.0 in #YEG Zone. 0.92 in #YYC Zone & 1.01 in the rest of AB. This metric describes whether transmission increased, decreased or stayed the same. What last week’s value seems to indicate is that cases plateaued over the week. (2/6)
This is better than an increase, but a plateau is not enough. Our new daily case numbers remain high & hospitalization/ICU admissions continue to grow. What we need to achieve together is several weeks of R value well below 1 w/ a corresponding decrease in new case numbers. (3/6)

A twitter play...

Starring me (playing the role of Paramedic doing Paramedic stuff in downtown #YYC).

Random put together looking guy with an expensive wardrobe, listening to AirPod Pro’s walking down the street.

(It’s a cold night with a brisk wind on the eve of a sorta-lockdown. Nate the Paramedic is in downtown Calgary, completing his paramedic duties, when suddenly (gasp!) a man approaches)

Man: Hey man, are you a Paramedic?

Me: (glancing at his own uniform) Um. Yup.

... /2
Man: Do you know how late I can get a drink till?

Me: Pretty sure last call is at 10 PM tonight.

Man: That’s it?!?

Me: Pretty sure.

Man: What about tomorrow?

Me: I’m pretty sure that restaurants can only do take out and delivery tomorrow.

Dr. Hinshaw says the new COVID commercials are aimed at those under 40 and others who haven't' gotten the message about the seriousness of COVID.

Hinshaw says the spots were shot last month under strict protocols.

Cast and crew followed protocols, including screening, off-camera masking and distancing at all times when the camera was not rolling.

Hinshaw says they used humour because he situation is serious, and they need to use all communication tools to reach all Albertans to understand the seriousness.

Expected measures from the Alberta Government today - but not in effect until Sunday...

Retail businesses, as of Dec. 13, will be allowed to remain open but must reduce capacity to 15% of the occupancy allowed under the fire code.

#COVID19AB #yyc #yeg…
Places of worship will face the same restriction.

Other new measures to take effect at midnight Sunday include the closure of all:

- Restaurants, pubs, bars, lounges, and cafes to in-person service. Only takeout, curbside pickup, and delivery services will be permitted.
- Casinos, bingo halls, gaming entertainment centres, racing centres, horse tracks, raceways, bowling alleys, pool halls, legions, and private clubs.

- Recreational facilities such as fitness centres, recreation centre, pools, spas, gyms, studios, camps, indoor rinks, and arenas

Watching Edmonton City Council hearing from Edmonton Zone Medical Staff Association doctors this morning. Some notes that were surprising to me who is dialed into this everyday...
#yeg #yegcc #COVID19AB @EZMSA2
- In 4-5 days current hospital capacity will be overwhelmed as there will not be the staff to man the additional needed ICU beds - they are also not trained properly to administer to ICU patients as they are being re-directed from their areas of specialization.
- Hospital admissions, ICU admissions and deaths are all significantly increasing to where the curve is almost straight up.

- Patients are seemingly fine and about the be discharged then within minutes doctors are calling a code for a crash cart for that patient.
