HIGHEST kids COVID hospitalization ever in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 of the whole pandemic… ➡️ But but but… I thought some politicians & economist had once said “kids are practically immune” to #COVID19. 🤦🏻‍♂️
2) Kids are known transmitters. They are not just like vaccinated adults. Kids are kids. Every hospitalization is a tragedy.
3) a 3 million person Danish study shows more kids in a household, more transmission. This is why we need to vaccinate to both protect kids and protect others in the household.
4) kids also get #LongCovid. Lots of people downplayed the risk to kids before. That was a grave mistake.
5) Were there early signals that #Omicron is more severe in kids? Yes. We saw this early on in the epicenter in South Africa 🇿🇦 of higher kids risk. 👇
6) new Discovery Health data from South Africa found that with #Omicron wave: ➡️ 20% higher risk of hospitalization in kids.
7) Watch how just 2 kids from one family brought the coronavirus to school in two classrooms - and then quickly spiraled out through the community. Kids spread. STOPPING TRANSMISSION is what will save more lives and prevent more #LongCovid. It’s not just individual risk. Duh!
8) What about deaths? Do these hospitalized kids in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 die from #COVID19? Yes. In fact in record numbers in recent UK 🇬🇧 delta wave. Every kid’s death is a tragedy. Don’t dare say “oh they had a risk factor” pretending as if kids are expendable!
9) meanwhile here is London’s #Omicron situation— near vertical.
10) schools everywhere need to ensure enough outdoor fresh air ventilation — if not, then add HEPA filters and other air disinfection… #COVIDisAirborne

➡️ you need high quality N95 / KN95 / KF94 / FFP2/ FFP3 masks.

➡️ also please ventilate, get HEPA filters, get upper room UV.
2) VENTILATION is key. Both ventilation and masks needed to reduce risk indoors. But most buildings not ventilated well enough.

Don’t count on monoclonal antibody drugs to save you—German researchers have found that #COVID19 synthetic antibody therapies developed by Eli Lilly and Regeneron lose most of their effectiveness when exposed in laboratory tests to the #Omicron variant.

2) While many drugs work, I don’t think they will end the pandemic. Stopping transmission and opportunities for mutation will be what saves us in the end. Not just milder cases with expensive pharma treatment.

BREAKING—Largest study of 2-shot Pfizer vaccine effectiveness against #Omicron from largest health insurer in 🇿🇦:

📌33% VE against #Omicron (symptomatic?) infection

📌70% VE against #Omicron hospitalization (93% against #DeltaVariant before in 🇿🇦)

➡️Urgently need boosters.🧵
2) the new study also mentions 20% greater risk of hospitalization among kids with #Omicron compared to an older strain last year.
3) Also, the protective effects of prior infection has waned and further erode by #Omicron. ➡️ Bottomline: don’t rely on past infection immunity!

📌 “Omicron is mild” dismissiveness = same energy as the “It’s just the flu” downplaying from Jan-March 2020. Learn from history. Don’t repeat it.

2) Exponential surge in cases is what will kill more people in the end. And while boosters work against #Omicron, the rollout of boosters wont be able to keep up with the exponential rise. We need to do more ASAP. See thread 🧵 below.
3) Anyone who touts “Omicron is milder” (not proven) also doesn’t understand epidemiology and exponential math. Even if it is 1/10th deadlier, but just merely 2x more contagious (we think #Omicron is 4-6x more), more people will die even with the 1/10th milder virus. See 🧵below

“You can’t chase an exponential virus” with a govt rollout of boosters alone. You need to do more IMMEDIATELY to stop the exponential growth. #Omicron doubling in 🇬🇧 every 1.7 days ➡️ BoJo’s booster-only plan cannot stop fast enough. The political willpower to save lives matters.
2) UK’s growth also isn’t even the fastest anymore. Denmark has now topped it at 1.6 days per doubling of #Omicron.
3) BoJo is right that we need to set aside whether it’s “mild” or not (it’s no proven, and many epidemiologists doubt it). The acceleration of #Omicron is what will kill more.
