📍Deaths are paralleling #COVID19 hospital admissions in Illinois—exponentially. (right is log axis)

📍Deaths in IL have also essentially tied last year’s all-time high.

➡️Now will they stop with “mild” finally? Let’s get #boosted & #N95/KN95 & #ventilated.

HT @DrWilliamKu
2) Other concerning news is that pediatric hospitalizations for #COVID19 in Illinois is growing fast as well as ICUs.
3) someone who eyeballed the numbers asked if 10% of those hospitalized die… It could be higher since those who die were probably hospital admitted a week prior or more. Though we can’t eyeball it exactly, it’s not single digit small it seems.

💡NEW—Vaccine efficacy 91% of 2 Pfizer shots protecting against pediatric multi system inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in teens age 12-18. 📌Huge—this was a major severe outcome of #COVID19 in kids before. This is a reminder kids need 2 shots. #GetVaccinated cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7… ImageImage
2) What is already known about this topic?
Vaccine effectiveness against multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), which can occur 2–6 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection, has remained uncharacterized.
3) What is added by this report?
Estimated effectiveness of 2 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against MIS-C was 91% (95% CI = 78%–97%). Among critically ill MIS-C case-patients requiring life support, all were unvaccinated.

⚠️EXCESS DEATHS in South Africa🇿🇦 are running at 130% of normal in the final 4 weeks of 2021–which translates to >10,000 excess deaths in just 4 weeks. ➡️Excess weekly deaths currently running ~3000 excess per week—SA has had large under-diagnosis like in previous waves. #Omicron ImageImage
2) to be clear on the English - “130% of normal” means 30% excess. But this is still 3000 excess per week for a population of ~60 million, which is 18% the size of the US. Not going to convert it but it’s not small. Can we please stop with the “mild”???
3) Australia also seeing surge in severe outcomes. This is not as mild as we think it will be.

Tons of students march out in protest against #Omicron. Brooklyn Tech is the largest high school in the US 🇺🇸 - with ~6000 students in this school alone! Maybe the kids & teachers together are trying tell the at-home / studio-isolated TV pundits something about #COVID19 risk…
2) This high school is 7 floors full of students! There is “absolutely no distancing” among students in crowded classrooms and halls of this ~6000 person high school.
3) meanwhile, 65,000 students and teachers just test #COVID19 positive in LA school district in the new year. 15-16%! abc7.com/los-angeles-sc…

Surging in NSW (Sydney region) Australia 🇦🇺:

⬆️ Cases of #COVID19
⬆️ Hospitalizations
⬆️ ICU
⬆️ On mechanical ventilators

Uncoupled? Not exactly. #Omicron Image
2) Surging #COVID19 hospitalizations and ICUs in the US as well… hospitalizations at record high in the Us now too. Image
3) What about #COVID19 deaths in a state like Illinois? This does NOT look “de-coupled” in any way. And similar parallelism between hospitalizations and deaths this wave versus summer wave. Image

NEW—Dutch🇳🇱 govt is advising *medical grade masks* be worn in busy outdoor spaces & **at all times in indoor public areas** where different households mingle—in all places where social distancing is impossible, such as shopping, markets & demonstrations.
dutchnews.nl/news/2022/01/w…
2) masks should be of type 2 medical standard rather than cloth, because these ‘offer slightly better protection against the emission of virus particles’ than non-medical masks and also offer more protection to the wearer, the OMT said.
3) Type 2 medical masks include the light blue pleated masks widely available in shops and pharmacies. Vulnerable people, however, should use a thicker FFP2 (ie KN95) medical mask when possible.

📍Finland govt is warning that #LongCovid could persist for months after an initial infection, could be emerging as a chronic disease—1 in 2 adults and ~2% of children may experience prolonged symptoms connected to #COVID19–even if mild/asymptomatic cases!
reuters.com/article/us-hea…
2) “There is a threat that Finland will see the emergence of the largest, or one of the largest, new groups of chronic diseases, and that not only too many adults will suffer from a long-term COVID-19, but at worst also children,” Kiuru said.
3) The Finnish institute of health and welfare considers an illness chronic when it has a major impact on public health and the national economy through lowered working capacity and strains on healthcare.
