The growing threat from Af-Pak terrorists in Central Asia in India's extended neighbourhood following the return of Taliban is not only a headache for Kazakhstan but also Tajikistan with Dushanbe alleging that terrorists are
being mobilised in Northern Afghanistan to attack secular societies of the region. Tajikistan, after Kazakhstan, that borders Afghanistan, has refused to recognise the Taliban government and said that over 6,000 terrorists have gathered near Southern borders of
the Central Asian Republics and Eurasian states. Tajikistan hosts India's first military base abroad. On Monday, participating in the CSTO summit, Tajik President and a close ally of India Emomali Rahmon claimed that there are over 6,000 militants near the
southern borders of the Collective Security Treaty Organization countries - in the north-east of Afghanistan. According to him, the number of camps and training centres for terrorists bordering the southern borders of the CSTO totals over 40.
Rahmon, ever since the return of Taliban, has been extremely warry of the spill-over impact of rebels from Afghanistan into Central Asia.
Russian counter terror experts told ET from Moscow that the Afghan Taliban are pushing armed militants and suicide bombers in an organised way in northern Afghanistan, along the borders with former Soviet republics. The experts claimed that Afghan Taliban are
not averse in meddling in Russian expert on Afghanistan Andrei Serenko, director of the Analytical Center of the Russian Society of Political Scientists and political observer of Nezavisimaya Gazeta, told ITON.TV (Israeli-Russian TV) about the complex and
explosive situation in Afghanistan and the impact of such events in neighbouring Kazakhstan. Russia, like India and Tajikistan and other Central Asian countries besides Iran, have so far refused to recognise Taliban and Moscow remains wary of encroachments by
terrorists and illegal migrants into Central Asia and Eurasia. Taliban has been advised to create an inclusive government by the international community, but without success so far.
ET has learnt that Indian counter-terror experts closely monitoring situation are analysing the role of ISI in the Kazakhstan attacks. Sources claimed that ISI has been encouraging Islamic State-Khorasan and Haqqani network.
Highly placed sources indicated to ET that IS-K may have financially backed terrorists who went on rampage in Almaty and elsewhere in Kazakhstan. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, while addressing a video conference summit of the Collective Security
Treaty Organization (CSTO) on Monday stated that sixteen law enforcement officers lost their lives during the recent violence in Kazakhstan. "Sixteen law enforcement officers were killed, and over 1,300 suffered injuries.
Unfortunately, civilian deaths were also reported, and the number is being clarified," he said. According to Tokayev, 1,270 businesses were affected across the country and more than 100 shopping malls and banks were looted and about 500 police cars were burned.
"Enormous damage has been caused, which is now being evaluated by a special government commission," Tokayev pointed out. Oil & uranium rich Kazakhstan is Central Asia’s biggest and richest state with PPP of 24, 380 USD (2020).
