There is a moment in Season 4, Episode 8 of #TheCrown that explains the #VotingRights impasse. 1/ #MLKDay
In this e8, The Queen want to unite the Commonwealth to oppose Apartheid, but she must get the one holdout to sign on first—Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher won’t budge. 2/ #VotingRightsAct #thecrown
Round after round the Queen’s men bring her edited versions of the coalition’s statement. Each time she whips out her red pen sniping, “No. No. No.” 3/
#VotingRightsAct #thecrown
No one can understand why Thatcher won’t oppose such an obvious evil. 4/
#Apartheid #thecrown #VotingRightsAct
Thatcher eventually agrees to an edit and everyone thinks she’s bent toward them. Then she stands at the podium and declares the language she agreed to is vague enough that she can justify going the opposite direction. 😵😳 5/
#Apartheid #thecrown #VotingRightsAct
In the final moments of the episode, Thatcher let’s it slip that her son has recently become a businessman—in South Africa. 6/

The @washingtonpost dropped epic report impact of 1700 slaveowning congressmen on legislation. Concludes their economic interests and white supremacist beliefs drastically impacted the legal foundations of our nation. 7/ #VotingRightsAct

As we close #MLKDay 2022, our democracy teeters on a precipice that Dr. Martin Luther King predicted in 1967, in his book, #WhereDoWeGoFromHere. 8/
#VotingRightsAct #MLK
King says whites who want equality are balanced by “…the unrepentant segregationists who have declared that democracy is not worth having, if it involves equality.” (pgs11-12, #wheredowegofromhere) 9/ #VotingRightsAct #MLKDay
In today’s terminology, we would say “the unrepentant white supremacist” or “the unrepentant white nationalist.” And we might think of these guys… 10/
#WhiteSupremacy #VotingRightsAct
But a white supremacist is not determined by the color of their cap or the whiteness of the sheet they wear. They are determined by what the DO. 11/

What is @Sen_JoeManchin doing?
In the face of certain voter suppression/subversion that will lead to the certain dismantling of our democracy, he is blocking a MINOR change (read #carveout) to the #Filibuster rule that would save us all. AND he’s lying about it. 12/#VotingRights
What @Sen_JoeManchin is doing is this: HE is singlehandedly dismantling our democracy.
And why?
Like #TheCrown’s Thatcher, he has a vested interest in the status quo.
13/ #VotingRightsMatter #MLKDay
Manchin is a multimillionaire. 71% of his $$ comes from energy company he started. Plus, over past 5 years he snagged 50+ billionaire donors. Nothing against billionaires. But when the rigged game is working for you, not so keen on letting others play. 14/ #VotingRightsMatter
Like Thatcher, @Sen_JoeManchin has sold his soul to💰. He may not scheme with the Nazis who attempted a coup. But, his love of 💵 is demonstrably greater than his love for America—greater than his love for democracy. 15/ #VotingRightsMatter #MLKDay
And @Sen_JoeManchin’s disregard for the #certain disenfranchisement of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, women, disabled, senior, sick and poor people in #WV and across the US makes him a #whitenationalist in deed and in heart. 16/ #VotingRightsAct #MLKDay
The @Sen_JoeManchin will join 1700 slave owning legislators whose votes shaped our nation to serve their business interests. They laid legal foundations for exploitation/neglect of images of God. Manchin will seal the deal. Why? #itsjustbusiness 17/17 #VotingRightsNow #MLK2022

1/ On @MSNBC Michael Beschloss just told the story of Gandhi sending the Queen a wedding present—a piece of cloth that he spun himself. Gift was downplayed at the time. Beschloss said gift was sign of how Queen made everyone feel special. 😧 #Queen #funeral
2/ I usually love Michael B’s take on everything on @MSNBC. But this is a GROSS oversimplification of that moment. #QueenElizabethII
3/ When the British colonized India they outlawed the spinning of Indian tapestries. Britain’s Indian “subjects” (non-citizens) were only allowed to grow the raw cotton. Then it was exported to Europe, spun in similar style and sold back to Indians at a profit. #queensfuneral

I was invited to tonight’s @potus speech from Independence Hall. Couldn’t attend because I was traveling today. Watching now!

“The threat to American Democracy is real… That’s why tonight I’m calling all Americans to come together to save democracy!” President Joe Biden
“There is no place for political violence in America! None!” @potus

1/ I’ve been thinking about the sudden and illogical attack on @BethMooreLPM. #bethmoore
2/ While I have reflected that my relationship with Jesus has moved from boyfriend-ish to brown liberator, Bob reminds where the whole evangelical lovey-dovey image of Jesus comes from. #churchasbrideofchrist #bethmoore
3/ So, why did White Evangelical’s pounce on a reference to crushing on Jesus that any one of us could find at ANY church Women’s conference? And why now? #bethmoore #loveydoveyjesus

For those who say they are tired of hearing about the link between the anti-Abortion movement and white male domination in the US…

For those who cheer the Supreme court ruling on Roe and still claim to be anti-racist and pro-women, the truth Is… 1/ lisasharonharper.substack.com/p/the-death-of…
There are many reasons people join movements. Your anti-Abortion stance may be grounded in your sense of morality.

But morality was not and IS NOT the driver of that movement. It has always been about regaining white male domination.

And here’s the thing… 2/ #RoeVWade
If the impact of well-intentioned people following white supremacists is racial and gender oppression, then those followers are guilty of racial and gender oppression.

Why? They did not require their party to find better way. 3/3

1/ I recently spoke on the intersections of race/gender oppression in US. The very first RACE Law in the nation’s foundational history was passed in VA 1662. It was also the very first GENDER-based law and the first CITIZENSHIP law passed on this soil.
2/ That 1662 law created race-based slavery, by locating citizenship in the womb of the mother. Citizens could not be enslaved. So, if your mother was enslaved, she wasn’t a citizen and you were not a citizen. So, you could be enslaved. Plus, they outlawed interracial marriage.
3/ The 1662 law was in full force for 200+ years until passage of 13th and 14th Amendments, which ended race-based citizenship and outlawed slavery. Interracial marriage wasn’t legalized until the Loving v. Virginia (1967) Supreme Court ruling 305 years after VA’s 1662 race law.
