The nationwide antigovernment protests that erupted earlier this month in Kazakhstan upended the country’s reputation as one of Eurasia’s most stable authoritarian regimes.

They also posed an enormous challenge to Kazakh journalists, reports @nickjlewis.
cpj.org/2022/01/nothin…
Journalists covering the unrest in #Kazakhstan were detained by police and targeted by mobs. They also worked amid a nationwide internet blackout.

Since the protests, authorities have sentenced at least four journalists to detention and questioned others.

"No one expected that this kind of thing could happen in Kazakhstan," Madina Alimkhanova, correspondent for international news agency @kaztag_kz, told @CPJ_Eurasia. "No one expected this kind of aggression towards journalists from protesters."

In September, Nusrat Shahrin Raka told her brother, Bangladeshi journalist Kanak Sarwar, that someone created a Facebook account impersonating her.

That fake profile landed Raka in jail – a move Sarwar believes is in retaliation for his work.

Kanak Sarwar worked as a journalist in Bangladesh for more than 20 years before he fled in 2016 after he was detained for nine months.

In October, #Bangladesh police detained his his sister, Nusrat Shahrin Raka, who remains behind bars.

Ahead of President Biden’s press conference today, journalists and advocates continue to be concerned about #pressfreedom in the U.S.

We urge the Biden administration to consider these issues and take immediate steps to address them.

cpj.org/bidenpressfree…
Our report on the Biden administration and the media offers recommendations for improving #pressfreedom in the U.S., including prohibiting the singling out of journalists at the border, ending the misuse of the Espionage Act, improving #FOIA, and more.

cpj.org/reports/2022/0… ImageImageImage
Though relations with the U.S. press have improved under President Biden, much more must still be done.

The U.S. cannot be an effective champion of media freedom globally unless it vigorously upholds it domestically.

“This report shows how governments and companies must act now to stop the abuse of this spyware which is evidently being used to undermine civil liberties, not just counter terrorism and crime,” said @RobertMMahoney.
“No one should have unfettered power to spy on the press, least of all governments known to target journalists with physical abuse and legal reprisals.”
