Two dozen exciting California state & congressional candidates to watch! Details in the thread. A map of California, labeled California June 7, 2022 Primary
Starting at the top, Cheryl Sudduth is a scientist running for the new Congressional District 8, created to give the diverse communities of Richmond, Vallejo, Fairfield, and Pittsburg a voice of their own. cherylsudduth.nationbuilder.com/2/cheryl
Cheryl Sudduth @CBSudduth currently serves on the West County Wastewater District Board, and has a long list of accomplishments, community service, and life experiences that reflect the story of this working class section of the Bay Area. cherylsudduth.nationbuilder.com/issues
CD8 is currently technically an open seat. However, Cheryl faces an incumbent from Sacramento County who got drawn into a less Democratic district and decided to run instead in CD8 even though he doesn't live in the district.
Next, in the East Bay's Assembly District 20, which includes Hayward, the surrounding unincorporated areas, San Leandro, Union City, and parts of Dublin, nurse Jennifer Esteen @Esteen4CA is running for State Assembly. jenniferesteen.com
Jennifer's experience in nursing and public health, as well as life experience, brings a focus on the issues facing this heavily working class district - housing, policing, healthcare, wages
jenniferesteen.com/issues
For a while, Jennifer was running to challenge the incumbent (Bill Quirk). When Quirk recently announced he wasn't running, a few other Democrats have since joined the AD20 race. It'll be a crowded primary.
Senate District 10 is the only Asian plurality district of California's 40 state senate districts. Hayward councilmember @aishabbwahab is running to represent this district, which goes from Hayward down through Fremont and to parts of Santa Clara County. aishawahab.com
Aisha made headlines in 2018 as the first Afghan-American woman to hold office in the US. Since then she has been a strong voice for renters on the Hayward city council. aishawahab.com/meet-aisha
On the West Bay, South San Francisco @JamesColemanSSF is running for Assembly District 21, covering the Peninsula. If you like @alex_lee you'll also like James - James is also a supporter of social housing, taxing billionaires, & single payer healthcare. james4california.com
AD21 is also an open seat and has multiple Democrats running in a crowded primary election in this deep blue district.
Speaking of @alex_lee, the Assemblymember who introduced bills for Social Housing & remote participation in public meetings, and is now carrying a bill to protect tenants from speculators, is running for re-election in what's now Assembly District 24
votealexlee.com
Alex Lee's district has shifted north to include all of Fremont. AD24 is one of two AAPI majority districts in California.
San Jose's Assembly District 25 (formerly numbered 27) is represented by @Ash_Kalra, who is running for re-election. He's the lead author of #AB1400, the #CalCare bill for single payer healthcare.
Assembly District 30 is on the Central Coast, running from the Monterey Bay down to San Luis Obispo. Redistricting flipped this R-held seat to a Dem leaning district. Seaside Councilmember and housing activist Jon Wizard @electwizard is running. electwizard.com
Jon Wizard's top issues are housing and the environment. He also supports #AB1400 (Single Payer Healthcare) electwizard.com/issues
In Assembly District 37, which includes Santa Barbara, redistricting has also turned a Republican-held seat into a Democratic district. SB Community College Trustee Jonathan Abboud @imallabboudit is running. Education & housing are his top issues abboudforassembly.com
Previously, Jonathan Abboud led the effort to create the Isla Vista Community Services District to bring some self-governance to the coastal community where many UCSB students live. He currently serves as the District's general manager. islavistacsd.ca.gov/how-we-got-here
Santa Clarita is another Assembly District, AD40, that is currently Republican held, but Democratic leaning under the new district lines. @Pilar4CA Schiavo is running to flip this seat to blue. She also supports #AB1400 #Calcare pilar4ca.com
The San Fernando Valley has a number of exciting Congressional candidates this year. Among them is Angelica Dueñas @Angelica4CA who is running in CD-29, which includes Sylmar, Van Nuys, and Sun Valley. angelica4congress.com
Healthcare is Angelica's top issue - she supports Medicare for All. angelica4congress.com/healthcare
In the western end of the San Fernando Valley, public health activist Shervin Aazami @AazamiShervin is running for the new Congressional District 32. Healthcare is also one of his top issues, and he supports #MedicareForAll
shervin4congress.com/about
next up we have everyone's favorite SoCal city - Culver City, where Mayor @danielwaynelee0 is running for Congress. He's also a #MedicareForAll supporter. danielwaynelee.com
While on the Culver City Council, Daniel Lee was a key vote in efforts to end exclusionary zoning, a brave move in the face of NIMBYs that attempted to recall him and another Councilmember. The recall failed to make it onto the ballot.
Also in Culver City, Isaac Bryan @ib2_real, who was elected in a special election last year, is running for re-election. The district has been renumbered from AD54 to AD55, but the area is similar. isaacbryanforca.com
One of Isaac Bryan's first achievements in office was to lower rents for families making less than 15% of the area median income. In Los Angeles, over 181,000 households earn less than $17,000 a year. a54.asmdc.org/press-releases…
On the San Diego coast, Senate District 38 runs from Oceanside to UCSD. This is a seat that Redistricting has made easier for Democrats to flip to blue. Catherine Blakespear @Cblakespear is a mayor & has chaired the San Diego Association of Governments. catherineblakespear.com/meet-catherine/
Catherine has been a supporter of bikes, bringing Open Streets events and also electric bikeshare to Encinitas, where she is Mayor.
One of the most recent candidate announcements is Bulmaro Vicente @Vicente4CA in Assembly District 68, which includes Santa Ana, Orange, & Anaheim. His top issue is affordable housing. vicenteforassembly.com/issues
Redistricting made big changes in Orange County. Among them is consolidating AD68 as a Latino district. From Santa Ana, Bulmaro "Boomer" Vicente returned to his hometown after going to Cal, where he works on housing, immigration, police accountability. vicenteforassembly.com/about
Assembly District 65 includes Compton, parts of Carson, and the Port of LA. Fatima Iqbal-Zubair @fatima4assembly fatimaforassembly.com is running a people-powered campaign here, that includes supporting single payer healthcare #Calcare fatimaforassembly.com/vision/health-…
Having taught chemistry & environmental science in this heavily polluted part of LA, one of Fatima's biggest issues is environmental justice. fatimaforassembly.com/about/ fatimaforassembly.com/vision/
In Assembly District 52 in East LA & Glendale, Mia Livas Porter @miaforassembly is running a no-fossil-fuel-money campaign, with a focus on issues such as the Green New Deal and stopping gun violence miaforassembly.com
West Hollywood is the center of LA's LGBTQ community. Under the new Redistricting map, it is in Congressional District 30, where @Maebe_A_Girl, #MedicareForAll supporter, neighborhood councilwoman, and drag queen is running for Congress. maebeagirlforcongress.org
As a trans/non-binary person, Maebe is fully committed to defending and advocating for all LGBTQIA people. maebeagirlforcongress.org/issues
Also supports the Green New Deal and ending wars.
Congressional District 34 includes Koreatown and downtown LA. @DavidKimForCA is running for Congress here. Focused on ending poverty, he supports #MedicareForAll and also universal basic income davidkimforca.com
Transit is a big issue for the densely populated district David Kim is running in. Interstates are free to drive on because federal govt provides lots of money for highways. If the federal govt redirects more of that to transit, it too could be free.
Congressional District 23 covers much of rural San Bernardino County, including Victorville and Twentynine Palms. @DerekMarshallCA is the #MedicareForAll & #GreenNewDeal candidate in this area.
derekmarshallca.com
Derek is also a supporter of high speed rail, which could connect the High Desert communities to Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
Congressional District 22 now covers a large part of the southern Central Valley, including Hanford, Porterville, Delano, and parts of Bakersfield. @BryanOsorio2022, Mayor of Delano, is running. Key issues include immigration reform and #MedicareForAll osorioforcongress.com/home
Lourin Hubbard @LourinHubbard is a #MedicareForAll candidate in Congressional District 22. His experience includes assisting low income residents of the Central Valley and working on water conservation.
lourinhubbard.com/about
Previously Congressional District 22 was held by the infamous Devin Nunes of @DevinCow fame. Since his resignation a few weeks ago, lots of Democrats have been running for this Central Valley seat.
Redistricting created an open State Senate seat in the Bakersfield-Hanford-Delano area as well, SD16. @RobFuentesCA, a former Planning Commissioner, is running. robfuentes.com
Among supporters of Rob Fuentes for State Senate are many young leaders in the southern Central Valley
Sacramento & Elk Grove are now in State Senate District 8. This is also an open seat. Dave Jones, former California Insurance Commissioner and an expert on climate change, is running. @ca_davejones davejonesforsenate.com
Dave Jones is supported by many elected officials and organizations, including the SEIU union.
Dave Jones also has some of the best campaign lit - back in 2018 when he was running for attorney general, his cardboard donkeys were the highlight of a CA Democratic Party convention. 8 months to the 2022 California Primary: Here are 10 progressive candidates to watch! While district lines are likely to change with redistricting, it's interesting to see three geographic clusters - inland California, the Southeast Bay, and LA County. Map of California labeled "california June 7 2022 prima
Let's start with the Southeast Bay. Stretching from downtown San Jose up through South and East Alameda County and home to many immigrant communities, this is one of California's fastest changing, fastest growing, and most politically exciting places.
.@alex_lee won the Assembly election in 2020 in an open primary and wrote bills this year on online public participation in public meetings, social housing, and protecting tenants. He's running in 2022 to defend the seat from a challenge from the center.

CA Senate Bill 9 allows up to 4 homes in most single-family zones, regardless of local zoning. You can use #SB9 to split your lot, add a 2nd home to a lot, or both (split lot & have 2 homes on each lot for total of 4).

Here's a how-to guide & thread:
sites.google.com/view/alfredtwu… 1/ Diagram showing how SB9 can...
#SB9 takes effect on 1/1/2022. Want to use it to build homes? First, check if your lot is eligible:
- SB9 only applies to lots that are zoned for 1 house. If your lot is zoned for more than 1 home, use #AB803 2/
More #SB9 eligibility requirements
- Located in existing urbanized area or urban cluster (this includes most suburbs)
- Not farmland, wetlands, conservation land, habitat for protected species, etc.
- Not landmark or in historic zone
