1/ Yesterday's #NFL games, where two 1 seeds fell to a 4 & 6 seed, were revenge for all the whiny pundits saying Wild Card weekend was a bust because of all the blowouts. In three games the 49ers beat the Rams, Cowboys and Packers. This is why sports is fun!
2/ And while the Cowboys & Patriots getting blown out in the first round is fun, toppling 1 seeds is even better. Here's a thread with some of my favorite reactions to yesterday's games, especially all the epic dunks on Aaron "Meth Hobo" Rogers.
3/ The Bengals are a division rival & on principle I want them to lose but if they win, it will confirm why div. winners are significant. My #NYM NL East div. was mocked for being soft but our rival ATL won the World Series. My #Steelers rival doing the same would be poetic.
4/ Bengals are also a last to first story. Smart drafting pays off.
5/ I actually didn't know the Bengals kicker was so good (they mainly scored a billion TDs against us this year, grumble) but this is a cool trick shot (he kicks the cap off a water bottle). That's 3 top notch PK in the division along side Tucker & Boswell
6/ The #SFvsGB game also showed how the macho mocking of special teams, like all relics of toxic ideology, will kill you in the end (see also: anti-vax, but more on that soon). GB had the worst ST this year and that's why they lost:
7/ And because I'm still salty: when PIT played GB, the refs negated a game-changing special teams play because Rogers' teams, like Brady's, gets the benefit of the doubt in calls. Minkah & Haden weren't offsides!
8/ And now, the dunks on Rogers. It was a glorious night on this Bird Site, because of the unified scorn for someone whose selfishness, male entitlement, and truculent misanthropy, made his humiliating exit a delicious picture of earthly karmic justice.
9/ And, as for why I'm even spending the time, as @atrupar (who has been staring into the abyss for 6 years for our safety) points out, Twitter gets taken over by big niche events all the time (yet with this one even anti-NFL people can join in)
11/ To add context, not only did Rogers lie about being vaccinated, he went on an Ayn-Rand fueled grievance binge that culminated, on the day of his loss, with casting doubt on the 2020 election. His NFL prowess kept him above criticism; then that popped.
16/ That's it for now. It was a glorious feeling when we all came together as one to enjoy the crash and burn of someone who rode his bizarrely lucrative talent to prominence and then went full jerkwas Icarus in front of our eyes.
80.02/ #MotzeiShabbatMovieNight continues. This week: "Apollo 13" - a family custom when someone is recovering from having wisdom teeth taken out. And it's pretty great.
80.03/ The #NYR won 7-3, scoring 5 unanswered, and that score is larger than the current 49ers-Packers game. Sports can be weird.
79.02/ Every erev-Shabbas I say 'stay safe' and while that's generally about the pandemic, for my fellow Jews it's also about the onslaught of antisemitism that assaults us since the dominance of unchecked hate on social media which led to the rise of Trump (ym'sh) and others.
79.03/ Motzei Shabbat began with the terror at the #ColleyvilleSynagogue. Thank God the hostages were all saved.
1/ Reflections on the final #NFL week, esp. related to my team, the #Steelers. We needed a narrow set of circumstances to make it into the playoffs: (1) beat our hated rival (BAL) on the road (2) the worst team must beat a playoff bound one (JAX vs IND) & (3) one more tiny thing
2/ The tiny thing was for the Raiders & Chargers not to tie. Ties are very rare; only one this season (#Steelers, of course, because ugh). This should have been so unlikely not to even be a worry. But I'm a sports fan, ruined by years of #Mets watching; I knew not to relax.
3/ Of the three events, the tie was the least likely, then the Colts losing to the hapless Jaguars, and the "easiest" (very hard) step would be for the Steelers to beat the Ravens. We were terrible on the road, the Ravens were better than us, so it wasn't great odds.
78.02/ #MotzeiShabbatMovieNight, John Woo's "Paycheck"
Why? (1) Underrated sci-fi action mystery, (2) we saw Mission:Impossible 2 wks ago and it's sequel is by Jon Woo... but it's terrible while this movie is great and almost the same genre en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paycheck_…
78.03/ Only silver lining to a Cowboys win: a scorigami!
1/ Why brilliant comedians can (will often) become out-of-touch cranks:
In their time they were considered acute observers but it was self-centered. Their acuity was only of their own condition and fortunately that reflected and thus resonated with their audience's experiences.
2/ For a new generation, they're still observing only themselves: their now out-of-touch, rich & famous & sheltered, selves. Back when young they lacked the ability to see the Other, but it wasn't noticeable because they were still of their generation.
3/ This lack of ability to see the Other is a lack of empathy, and now their inherent self-centeredness is glaring and offensive. The audience moved on but their skills didn't.
