I've just returned from a tip up to north QLD, traveled via coal mine country - Rolleston/Injune/Clermont/etc.
I have to say these communities don't seem to be benefiting from coal mining much (as Libs & Nats insist). Most workers must be FIFO/DIDO.

These towns are dilapidated, vacant shops, lucky to have an IGA. The houses are old & dilapidated. The cars in town are basic, well-used, nothing flash.
No evidence these locals are on $150-$250K+ coal mining incomes. So, I'm guessing they're not mostly.

Buildings (like council chambers/churches/schools/hospitals/etc are small & old), roads aren't the best.
Basically, there's very little evidence in these communities that they sit atop a multi-billion dollar industry.
The money isn't staying in these towns.

It blows the Nationals' argument out of the water that stopping coal mining will kill small country towns.
These towns aren't benefiting much from coal mining as it is, maybe a few businesses/ppl are but they're few & far btwn. They look like poor towns.
It's a con.
