Alberta’s Auditor General will not be allowed to present six performance audits of the UCP’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, after UCP MLAs voted down his request to bring his findings to a committee of the legislature.

Denying the Auditor’s request to present his work, and effectively banning him from testifying on his COVID-19 audits, is an unprecedented attempt to hide the truth from Albertans.

At a scheduling meeting of the Public Accounts Committee today, Auditor General Doug Wylie said he had multiple performance audits that warranted the committee’s attention, and proposed that he present his findings on June 21, 2022.

All of the UCP members — Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, Peter Singh, Garth Roswell, Roger Reid, Jackie Lovely, Searle Turton, Jordon Walker, and Devinder Toor — voted to defeat a motion brought forward by Schmidt to hear from the Auditor General on that date.

By blocking him from presenting to the committee, the UCP is preventing the legislature from considering his findings and protecting senior government officials from having to respond to his recommendations.

According to the Auditor General’s Audit Plan, his COVID-19 performance audit’s were focused on the “areas of highest risk and importance, including programs and services that impact vulnerable citizens, and investments and activities designed to leverage economic recovery.”
