1/ THREAD covering the @Meta Quest Foo Fighters concert in VR, which had a horrible onboarding experience, the lobby crashed, & LOTS of people could not get in (see responses below).
This pre-recorded concert started at 8:05p but Horizon Venues didn’t even open until 8p & crashed
2/ They advertised Foo Fighters everywhere, but clicking on the Events app, you could only declare your interest in the event with no way to join an instance until after 8p.
The advertised a 8p concert but don’t even add a join link until 8p, which was super confusing & stressful
3/ When the reminder to join came up, clicking on that link took you to the dressing room of Venues, but the lobby had crashed out due to the load of everyone joining at once.
There was not an intuitive way to join the concert with a crashed lobby & so many never got in
4/ Meta’s Events app brought up an interface like this, except it only gave one button option of interested & didn’t turn to Join Now button until after 8p, and then even after that the Join Now took you to your Venues green room that didn’t let you into the lobby.
5/ There’s a backdoor way to enter into events in Horizon Venues from your dressing room by looking at your wrist menu & clicking Join.
I saw the numbers of people shooting up, but it didn’t work at first.
I don’t remember if I finally got in this way or via the other Join button
6/ After finally getting in, there was a 45-min pre-recorded @foofighters concert shot from 2 different 180-degree monoscopic cameras with a simultaneous 2D shoot for the Facebook livestream version (neither were live)
Shots via my Quest 2 lens since photos are disabled in Venues
7/ There was a different multi-camera, 2D version that was also broadcast onto Facebook, which can be seen here:
facebook.com/MetaQuestVR/vi…
8/ A really annoying thing about the VR production of the @foofighters concert was that the directors seemed to be prioritizing the shoot for what would look best for the 2D version, since there were cameramen walking around on the stage killing the overall immersive vibe.
9/ I understand that more people will likely see the 2D livestream, but there were many times camera guys or crane felt pretty disruptive.
The VR shots were also pretty low-res, far away, positioning was more optimized for the 2D sightlines.
2D version more cinematic & emotional.
10/ Overall, the @foofighters themselves gave some great performances & I still preferred being immersed with VR over the 2D livestream.
There were some pretty magical, audio-reactive post-processing effects that gave the feeling of holograms with very immersive lighting effects.
11/ When I finally got into the Foo Fighters concert within Horizon avenues, I was the only person within my instance.
I actually prefer that as I typically mute other folks in public instances. In the past, there was no way to mute sounds effects, but this may finally be fixed.
12/ I dropped by @meta’s Questy’s in Horizon Worlds after the Foo Fighters concert & I was the only one out of a dozen folks who actually got in.
60k+ had reserved interest & some folks reported that it peaked at ~13k+, but probably would’ve been more given the comments here:👇
13/ Tweet from @PPCKirk capturing the experience of trying to click the “Join” button for 30 minutes and it failing.
The event was advertised for 8p, & actually started at 8:05p.
The virtual doors to a 8p virtual event should open at 7:30p, 7:45p, or 7:50p. Not at 8p sharp.
14/ Lots more folks reporting that they could not get into the Foo Fighters Concert on the #QuestAfterShow hashtag + in the comments of this Tweet:
15/ Another thread of folks who couldn’t get into Meta’s Foo Fighters convert via @UploadVR’s @hjbaker_
I got into a solo instance & was watching the concert & not replying to threads like this & so it’s hard to tell what % of folks trying to join were able to actually join in.
16/ @meta Horizon VP made the 1st public statement acknowledging the problems saying two hours later, "Our teams are working on it–the demand was unprecedented."
The had 60k+ people declare interest & didn't open virtual doors for a 8p concert until 8p.
17/ Here's a Reddit thread detailing lots of other people who were not able to get into the Foo Fighters concert.
Many report how frustrating it was to see the join numbers climb up to 12.7k to 13k & still not be able to get in by clicking the Join button:
reddit.com/r/oculus/comme…
18/ Why was it monoscopic?
You can't combine a 3D CGI world + avatars placed spatially + allow users to move around + have a stereoscopic experience that won't have conflicts. You need a fixed POV solo experience for 3D stereoscopic video to work properly.
19/ @Hero_Kvatch writes up the problems with Foo Fighters concert for @UploadVR citing this thread, which lays out my experience that others also seemed to have had.
Many comments of folks having trouble.
I can't confirm when I got in or when it started.
uploadvr.com/foo-fighters-q…
20/ @Meta's Foo Fighters concert was advertised as a VR event with a backup 2D stream for folks without headsets. But the spatial design & shoot prioritized the 2D version making the VR parts not as immersive as it could have been.

21/ Meta is ~2-3 years behind the frontiers of 6DoF virtual concert experimentation.
The most immersive VR concert I've seen so far has been @jeanmicheljarre's "Welcome to the Other Side" by @_VRrOOm_ in @VRChat with projection mapped Notre-Dame visuals:
22/ @_VRrOOm_'s latest @jeanmicheljarre immersive concert "Oxymore" is probably 4-5 years ahead of what @meta is thinking about. It was a world hop through a dozen or so navigable immersive spaces in @VRChat that changed with each new song. Very immersive.
23/ It's also possible to make 360 video more immersive.
The best 360 video Quest performance I've seen is @MIYAVI_OFFICIAL #Vket5 in @VRChat produced by @Virtual_Market_'s @DyLhun.
Makes a huge diff when VR design is prioritized.

24/ Also worth shouting out @theWaveXR's UGC platform for virtual concerts (RIP), which was also doing lots of amazing & innovative work when it comes to virtual performances on PCVR. Their immersive videos were some industry-best in experimentation.
25/ Virtual concert producer & VTuber @VirtuaLilly compiled lots of 6DoF VR concerts that have taken place within @VRChat in a narrative video.
Most of these shots are from PCVR worlds, but some of them are also optimized for Quest, especially ones at Vket
26/ Lots of discussion about virtual concerts from the @VRChat community.
@DyLhun points out VR bands who are playing together networked using "Yamaha Netduetto/Syncroom along with low latency streaming protocols on AVPro, through CDN services even then:"
27/ @DyLhun points to a YouTube breakdown band @AMOKA_info did explaining (in Japanese) how they play together synchronized in @VRChat using Yamaha Netduetto/Syncroom.

There's been multiple years of playing live music in @VRChat.

28/ Here's a thread from @metaculturemag's @aemethVR covering one of the live singing concerts (in English) the she says is similar to what @TeamMuse_ has been doing, which blends Twitch / @VRChat audience participation, & has live lights + stage changes.

1/ @ebakerwhite's had 19 unanswered questions on @Meta's VR content moderation policies, so @BuzzFeedNews built a Horizon World containing content that got banned on FB & Instagram.
They reported it, but wasn't removed.
Then asked Comms & Meta removed it:

2/ Here's the 19 unanswered questions from @ebakerwhite about the VR content moderation policy in Horizon Worlds.
s3.documentcloud.org/documents/2120…
3/ I think some of Meta's existing content moderation issues will be replicated in VR, especially regarding Facebook Groups.
But I do think the network effects of going viral on 2D platforms are & will be different with immersive, 3D Horizon VR worlds

Odd update by @Frooxius: "any statements by [co-founder & CEO @karelhulec] or the official [@neos_vr] Twitter during this period do not reflect my views, or the views of the rest of my team, regarding the values & future of this platform"
Could be related to some crypto/$$$ diffs
The neos-discussions & neos-credits-ncr
channels on @Neos_vr Discord have the latest speculation from community members with many puzzled as to what's up.

Here's 1D, 1M, 3M, & 1Y charts on the $NCR crypto coin that's been tanking:
coinmarketcap.com/currencies/neo…
3/ Lots of additional context from @qDot, who documented how @Neos_VR Patreon was giving supporters reward allotments of $NCR cryptocurrency.
But a price spike $NCR allowed folks to turn a quick profit, likely led to a sell off tanking the overall price.

2/ I really, really quite enjoyed my 15-20 hours of playthrough. There were a number of game-breaking bugs that extended my play time, which hopefully many will be addressed in future updates in 2 weeks.

Some more context here in my write-up & take aways:

3/ I'm going to read, watch, & aggregate other reviews of @TenderClaws' VVR2 in this thread as others unpack this experience.
I see it as a landmark piece of immersive storytelling & I'm curious to see the VR community's reaction it.

Here's the trailer.

1/ @Meta's Earnings call is just getting under way.
investor.fb.com/investor-event…

This is the first time that they're breaking out their XR costs with Reality Labs Operating Loss, which looks like it's been around $12.293B over the last 5 quarters.

I'll try to capture other XR news👇
2/ The $FB stock is getting hit hard in after hours market trading dropping 22% for missing earnings projections.
marketwatch.com/story/meta-sha…
3/ I believe there's some new historic data for how much revenue & income loss @meta had with @RealityLabs over the past 3 years:
2019 XR Revenue $501M & Income (loss) of ($4.503B).
2020 XR Revenue $1.139B & ($6.623B).
2021 XR Revenue $2.274B & ($10.193B).

1/ I agree with @washingtonpost tech journalist @WillOremus that we haven't achieved an interoperable Metaverse yet, but I disagree with his assessment that we won't anytime soon as it depends on how you define a minimal viable Metaverse.

TREAD comparing Metaverse frameworks 👇
2/ Probably the most widely cited series of essays on the Metaverse are from @ballmatthew.
matthewball.vc/all/forwardtot…

It's one of the more comprehensive mappings, although it lacks a comprehensive ethical framework as a part of the Design Guidelines or human rights in the Law.
3/ @Meta's approach to the metaverse emphasizes Interoperability, & they do actually have OpenXR + WebXR implementations, which @WillOremus ignores.
They also claim to be prioritizing Privacy, but only according to their narrow definition of consent-based control of information.
