As #UkraineRussiaWar continues, and @IPCC_CH publishes it latest #Climate report, we take a closer look at the energy policy measures Europeans can take to weaken both Putin and climate disruption.
Take a look at the most efficient measures we have found so far 👇
#Thread
First, #EnergySufficiency measures (in plain English: stop wasting energy) are by far the best. Quick to implement. Efficient. Cost-effective. They should become a national security priority and give ideas for people to tangibly #StandWithUkraine in those dark days.
Second, #EnergyEfficiency targeting oil/gas heating buildings is a must. It however takes time to be rolled-out to significantly impact our dependence. All the more reason to start now!
Third, #Renewables even if it takes time to deploy them at scale. We can first focus on the quicker wins, like deploying solar panels in Algeria (a key gas supplier to the EU), and a speedy deployment of #HeatPumps and #SolarHeating systems at home.
Fourth, current politicians’ focus is on finding other fossil fuels #LNG #coal. However needed that might be in the short term, this is a costly and largely climate-negative route to follow. This should thus be implemented as a last resort and temporary solution.
Fifth, the worst policy choice, by far, is to label ‘fossil gas’ as potentially sustainable under the EU #SustainableFinance #Taxonomy. This is great for Putin, bad for climate, bad for EU economy. #StopFakeGreen
Finally. This is just a working document done <6h by @LeonLeuser @delair_marie @thalkarin @ml_defard @Phucvinh_ @ThPellerin

On déroule.👇

Emmanuel Macron just delivered an important address on climate change and the green transition, and what is next for France in the coming years. This came after several months of delay. Here is a thread to analyse his annoucements: 1/14
2. Macron is clear on the objective: France needs to reduce its GHG emissions by 5% every year, from now until 2030. 5% a year, is a HUGE ambition.
But there is a big gap between such a profoundly ambitious short-term objective, and the announcements he made.
3. One clear announcement is to fully phase-out coal in French power generation by 2027. Sounds ambitious?
Well...
In 2017, Macron annonced the coal phase out for 2022.
In 2023, he announced it for 2027...

I have the feeling that some people are making a big deal out of something Macron said about the "European regulatory pause". I'll put Macron's words in context; and my analysis at the end of the thread.
""We Europeans have already adopted a lot of regulations, more than all our neighbours. We are ahead of the Americans, the Chinese or any other country in terms of regulations."
"We have set ourselves 2050, 2030 objectives to decarbonise, reduce phytosanitary products, etc. I call for a European regulatory pause. Now we have to implement. We must not make new changes to the rules because we will lose all the players. So we need stability."

Breaking: Macron wants 1) a French IRA-like cleantech tax credit and 2) an "EU regulatory break".
Here is are my take-aways, from Macron's speech at the Elysée Palace, with a closer look at Europe and #CleantechEU.
First, here is Macron assessment of the situation.
1- France lost more industry than others. Because it didn't do "the reforms" other did in 2000s (not mentioned, but incl. Hartz IV in Germany).
According to Macron: no welfare state without industry. Trade deficit in France is due to deficit in 1) energy, 2) industry, so speeding up industrial development should reduce French trade deficit.
