Thread on the risks of Europ's increased dependence on US LNG
1- Among the pillars of energy security:
a- Diversification of energy sources
b- Diversification of energy imports
c- Low volatility of energy prices
d- Affordability and reliability
#Russia #Natgas #LNG #EU
2- Answer the following:
a- Who benefited the most from stopping Nordstearm 2?
b- Who was the Marketing-in-Cheif of US LNG?
c- Who took advantage of Russian invasion of Ukraine to secure US LNG market share in Europe?
d- Which country is the largest gas exporter to Europe now?
3- Europe has not learned its lesson... yet!

- All they are doing now is shifting dependence from the "mined" fossil fuels to the "mined" minerals needed for the "claimed" carbon neutrality.
and most importantly: shifting Europe's dependence from Russian gas to US gas!

🇶🇦🇩🇪⛽⚡ #Germany and #Qatar have hit difficulties in talks over long-term #LNG supply deals amid differences over key conditions, including the duration of any contract, three people familiar with the discussions told #Reuters.

1/5
#Germany, which aims to cut its carbon emissions by 88% by 2040, is reluctant to commit to #Qatar's conditions to sign deals of at least 20 years to secure the massive #5
#LNG volumes it needs to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, the people said.

2/5
#Qatar, the world's largest #LNG supplier, is also specifying terms such as a destination clause that would prevent #Berlin from rerouting the gas to other areas in Europe, a condition which the European Union opposes.

Was heißt das konkret? (1/6)

🧵1/14 Protest gegen LNG, Brunsbüttel 2021 Photo credit: Luca Enge

3/ however, natural gas is not so important for its primary energy supply. poland still heavily depends on #coal, in particular for its electrical energy production. Image

Can the European Union ban Russian gas imports?

Answer: Faster than you might expect, but it comes down to great leadership & setting the right priorities!

We continue - Part II with a total of 25 Tweets

1/n 🧵
#UkraineRussiaWar #EuropeanUnion
In part I we explained that Europe must replace 150bcm of Russian gas imports to help support the end of the Russian genocide in Ukraine.

It will also be the recipe to reduce the current risk-premium in gas prices & avoid long-lasting food shortages or a refugee crisis.

2/n
We explained that...
- (1) higher LNG imports from optimised infra & capacity utilisation can deliver up to 90bcm or 62% of 150bcm if free market prices can continue to "pull" LNG into Europe;
- (2) one-off storage potential of up to 25bcm (one winter) to buy some time...

Can the European Union ban Russian gas imports?

Answer: Faster than you might expect, but it comes down to great leadership & setting the right priorities!

Let's go - Part 1 of a total of 25

1/n 🧵
#UkraineRussiaWar #EuropeanUnion
Basics first: How much gas does Europe need to replace (not just the EU, UK et al too)?

Answer: Europe purchased 150 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas from Russia, imported from 3 pipelines & 15bcm in the form of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) by sea.

2/n Source: Burggraben
Why is it important to cut Russian gas?
Because it finances Putin's genocide in Ukraine which in turn pushes gas prices up. That destroys businesses and - for heaven's sake - creates food shortages with a subsequent refugees crisis.

In 2021, Europe imported ~158 Bcm of Russian #natgas.
By 2027, that figure is (supposedly) going to be 0 Bcm.

How do the Europeans get that done? Time for a 🧵
1/n Firstly, how does Europe plan to move away from Russian gas?

1. Moar US #LNG.
2. Increased energy efficiency.
3. More renewable energy deployment.
4. Healthy doses of optimism and idealism.

See @EU_Commission statement below.

ec.europa.eu/commission/pre…
2/n Specifically, within the EU's statement is the commitment to increase LNG imports from the US by:

15 Bcm in 2022
50 Bcm by [2027]

Seems pretty doable? Until you actually dig into it.

Beginning now, the CEOs of ExxonMobil, BP America, Chevron, Shell, Devon, and Pioneer Energy will testify before the U.S. House Committee on Energy & Commerce, addressing questions of price gouging and war profiteering.
Of concern to the committee is skyrocketing profits at a time of rising gas prices and war. In the first quarter of 2022 vs 2021, the profits of the leading oil companies increased by 288% ExxonMobil, 540% Chevron, 201% ConocoPhillips, 50% BP, 4872% Marathon, and
134% Shell.
Chairman Pallone reminds the oil company CEOs testifying at today's hearing on price gouging that they cannot claim that they have no control over gas prices, explaining: "You set the wholesale price and that sets the retail price."

Refusal of Russian gas - illusions and reality

The recent announcement by Lithuania and other Baltic countries to completely give up Russian gas has gotten a lot of attention in the media field. It is presented as a victory and an
1/
appeal to other EU countries to follow this "successful" example.

In fact, the opposite is true. Almost all the gas in the Baltic States is Russian. But it comes at the expense of reverse gas from Hungary.

Previously, the Ukrainian gas transport system could only work in
2/
the direct direction from Ukraine to Hungary. At the beginning of 2022, the possibility was created to transport gas also by reverse, in both directions. The Hungarian direction became the second physical route of gas supply to Ukraine from Europe after Slovakia.

Since 2015.

Debate on #LNG motion begins with BC Liberal MLA Mike Bernier suggesting that BC LNG can “help” with the transition away from coal.
LNG is not a transition fuel. The methane emissions from #fracking intensify the #ClimateEmergency
MLA Bernier states “we are losing billions in investment.”

No mention of billions in subsidies to prop up oil and gas industry.

Climate change is already costing billions.

Consider the costs of wildfires, droughts, floods.

What will the immediate impact be of the #EU's deal with the U.S. to provide at least 15 billion additional cubic meters of #LNG? 1/3
2/3 #Russia currently supplies 40 percent of the natural gas imported by the EU, so which alternatives could countries turn to in the event of Russia turning off the tap? The continent would have to look towards suppliers of liquefied natural gas, which typically arrives by ship.
3/3 Europe has some of the highest gasoline prices in the world. Most of Western Europe was paying upwards of $6.00 for a gallon of #gas as of March 14, with some of the highest prices being charged in the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Italy and Norway.

Presidents @JoeBiden & @VonDerLeyen have just announced a deal that will see 🇺🇸 deliver an additional 15 billion cubic metres of liquified natural gas (#LNG) this year to 🇪🇺.

It's designed to give #EUCO leaders the confidence today to ban Russian energy imports.
But #Biden acknowledges the problem: Europe has few #LNG port facilities to receive the liquified gas, and they're already operating at capacity. He says US will help build new LNG infrastructure.

Longer term, 🇺🇸 will deliver at least 50bn cm per year to 🇪🇺 from now to 2030.
The amount of extra 🇺🇸#LNG deliveries by ship this year promised by #Biden amounts to 10% of the 155 bcm of gas 🇪🇺 imports from Russia each year via pipeline.

EU will "build more infrastructure to receive LNG and to take steps to increase the efficiency of gas" Biden says.
