For the first time, #IPCC has highlighted the threat that mis-/disinfo pose to climate action - something our coalition has analysed and reported on since 2020. In a press release circulated today w/ partners like @consciousadnet@foe_us@CCDHate and @ClimateSSN, @ISDglobal said:
“We have a clear taxonomy of harm for other issue areas, including public health and electoral integrity, which have shown how such content translates into real-world impacts for both individuals and societies. While the climate sector has long argued the same...
...until now we have lacked recognition from key entities like the IPCC, UNFCCC and COP on the dangers posed by a muddied, polarising information space. Bad actors are using a tried and tested playbook to weaken public mandates and create confusion on the viable solutions...
...this includes weaponising climate response within a broader ‘culture wars’ frame and conflating it with any supposed controversy, from #COVID19 lockdowns and #VaccineMandates to critical race theory, #transrights or wider geopolitics...
...We must remove the incentives to spread climate disinfo across social media and reduce the available platforms for bad actors. Only then can we weed misleading ‘discourses of delay’ from public life and have a good faith debate on the best mitigation/adaptation approaches...
This year we want to see:
1) A unified definition of the threat adopted at COP27;
2) Robust policies developed within tech company Terms of Service and Community Guidelines;
3) Scaled campaigns and advocacy on (verified) climate science, including through paid advertising;
4) Punitive action against ‘super-spreaders’ who share false claims on- and offline;
5) Research into effective forms of pre-bunking and inoculation against climate disinfo at a societal level; and
6) Better capacity-building at the grassroots to tackle this issue long-term."
Some of @ISDglobal's flagship research on this issue to date:
"Germany and the alleged 'Climate Lockdown': How right-wing populists and conspiracy groups are using the pandemic to mobilize against climate action" isdglobal.org/isd-publicatio…
"Cold wind from the right: How right-wing parties and actors are abusing the climate crisis for their own benefit. An analysis of opposition narratives and disinformation in the context of the 2021 German Federal Election."
And h/t to @anicanaca for providing inspiration with her original piece!
Some of the highest-traction content came from 'blue tick' accounts, including those with tens of thousands - and in some cases millions - of followers on Twitter.
As #COP27 reaches a (fraught) finale in Sharm el-Sheikh, a short 🧵 on the state of climate mis-/disinformation and our findings from the @caadcoalition Intelligence Unit:
1) The events of 2022 have turbocharged an already well-funded and transnational ecosystem for disinfo…
2) Russia’s war in Ukraine and the subsequent disruption to energy supply chains have spurred new (or revived old) anti-climate attacks - related content is trending in online communities everywhere from the US and Brazil to Germany and Australia.
3) Big Oil and Gas, climate delayists and other vested interests are falsely attributing blame for these events on “the cult of #NetZero”, investing $ ten of millions to convince citizens that fossil fuels are essential to avoid economic collapse.
There is a lot of noise in the UK about a #NetZero referendum, largely fuelled by high-vis pundits like Nigel Farage and groups like Net Zero Watch pushing the narrative on GB News, talkRADIO, The Sun etc. @ISDglobal has been monitoring this closely since COP26 and can reveal👇
There is *no parallel interest* evidenced across social media. I repeat, despite continual profiling in the mainstream media, our data suggests the public are either uninterested or actively criticising the idea online. The graph below shows all mentions since Jan 1 2022…
When spikes do occur, they are driven by small media flurries or public statements, rather than ground-up discussion from users around this cause. The first on 4-5 Feb relates to Farage’s comments on GB News, then pushed by Darren Grimes and others to try and create a controversy
The latest report from @EP_Democracy has just been passed and formally recognises the threat of #climate mis- and disinformation. I believe it's the first time any policymaking body has adopted such language, and directly builds on efforts by @ISDglobal and our partner coalition.
@EP_Democracy@ISDglobal Article 148. "Emphasises the urgent need to address climate mis- and disinformation; welcomes the efforts at COP26 to adopt a universal definition of climate mis- and disinformation and to outline actions to address the matter;"
@EP_Democracy@ISDglobal Article 148 [cont]. "calls for models such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to be built on to create a global code of conduct on disinformation, a process that would provide the basis for a Paris Agreement on Disinformation;"
