Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi says Premier Kenney's decision to amend Municipal Gov Act to ban cities from implement their own health measures is "deeply disappointing."
Worries this overreach will go beyond the mask bylaw - saying province can overrule anything it doesn't like.
Sohi says changing the MGA means the province could changes smoking rules, traffic issues.
Says they will meet with lawyers, council colleagues and other municipalities to see what their options are.
Sohi says city stepped up when province wouldn't when it comes to mask bylaw.
They're following the rules that are in place.
Sohi says they have never been consulted on removal of protections by the province, including mask bylaw.
He adds he doesn't expect any consultation from the province as they move to change the MGA.
Sohi says he's been working to build up the partnership between the city and the province- says he will continue with this effort for collaboration and several shared interests.
