#Russia's forgotten super-missile boat in Black Sea, the BORA Class 'hovercraft'

Thread/

We haven't heard much about these but they are an interesting design. The most powerful missile boats of the Cold War.

Only two Pr. 1239 built, both now based in Sevastopol, Crimea. russian hovercraft
Primary armament is 8 x 3M-80E "Moskit", aka SS-N-22 SUNBURN supersonic anti-ship missiles. Really impressive weapons, famous in the 1990s.

Same armament as the Sovremenny Class destroyer, much heavier than other fast attack craft (FACs)
Here it is next to a Tarantul class missile corvette and Buyan class ships
We say hovercraft, or surface effect ship. It looks like a catamaran but hovercraft skirts rotate down between the hulls both fore and aft.

When these are retracted they are not always obvious
It also has two sets of extra screws (propellers) which fold down when it is in 'hovercraft' mode
As well as anti-ship missiles and guns, it has an SA-N-4 GECKO SAM (surface to air missile) launcher at the back. this is retractable so not always easy to see
It's quick, capable of 55 knots (102 km/h, 63 mph). It's forte is inshore
Two were built, both are still in Sevastopol but only one, , is believed to be active right now. Here it is exercising just before the invasion. It is heading away from the camera

**UPDATE**
Thread. Expected #Russian Landing Near #Odessa, Ukraine

Have categorized the landing beaches using Open Sources. Not the same as a real beach survey, but can give you an idea of the issues.

Karolino-Buhaz would be the war-game answer.
nod @detresfa_ @SimTack amphibious landings Odessa map
Not clear how much beach reconnaissance Russia has been able to do. But they should anyway know these beaches well.
Based purely on geography, the armchair answer would be for Russia to land at Karolino-Buhaz.

But that has a lot of urban cover for defenders and the assault could easily get bogged down. It is unclear what the Ukrainian defenses are like here.

Russia has amassed a sizable amphibious landing ship fleet near Odessa, Ukraine. Will they land?

Quick explainer thread on Russian Navy amphibious landings capabilities in Black Sea

Usual caveats
The large landing ships they have are not like the western model of a landing-ship-dock.

If the ships are to remain offshore, where they are safer, then the vehicles have to be able to swim ashore on their own
The swimming 'tanks' are less well armored and armed. Basically infantry vehicles.

Each ship can carry 10-12 depending on a lot of variables.

And these 'swimming landings' are very weather dependent. They don't like waves.

Also vert vulnerable to anti-tank missiles

Obviously we have woken up to a major invasion of #Ukraine by #Russia. I am not going to be one of those #OSINT people who try to capitalize on war for Social Media reasons. But I will follow naval aspects. Mostly analysis Image
Right now there is a Russian navy hydrographic vessel near #Odessa. Likely weather intelligence for Russian forces, not sexy but important
There are also a number of warships, some with kalibr cruise missiles. These are likely firing missiles in ‘first day’ strategic strikes. But vessels carry relatively few missiles. Kilo submarines only 2-4
